Sanchez says he expects to play when he returns

Getty Images

Realistically, the Jets have already made their move away from Mark Sanchez.

But after being left to twist and “compete” all summer, the former Jets starting quarterback said he expects to get back on the field when he returns from short-term IR.

Sanchez was placed on the injured reserve/designated for return, and can return to the practice field in six weeks and be activated in eight. When that time comes, he said he wants his old job back.

I expect to play, that’s just the way I am,” Sanchez said, via Rich Cimini of “I’m expecting to be the starter, I always have been.”

Sanchez said he’s fine with the decision to shelve him for a few months, and that he was planning to follow a more conservative plan that doesn’t include surgery for now.  Sanchez said the multiple doctors advised him to rehab first, but neither Sanchez nor General Manager John Idzik ruled out surgery after the season.

Of course, by the time Sanchez is well enough to play, Geno Smith (the guy Idzik drafted to replace him) could have made the job his own.

But Idzik called Sanchez “a very important player,” which is curious given the way he’s been treated.

“He’s a quarterback. He’s a very important player to our team,” Idzik said. “The designation is tailor-made for someone like this. . . .

“It wasn’t misdiagnosed at all. We were literally taking it day to day. Now, after three weeks and little bit more information, looking forward, you have to readjust your sights.”

The approach the Jets have taken to this is curious to say the least. If Sanchez does take the field when he returns, it means a bad thing has happened. Either Smith has gotten hurt, or has played to a level that will cast doubt on his future as the starter.

Either way, it will be a mess, which seems perfectly appropriate.

When Sanchez comes back, he’ll do it by arriving on the field inside a tiny little car, where he and a bunch of other clowns will pile out. It fits with the Jets’ circus.

Usually I would accuse Mark Sanchez of being delusional, but after having seen the way Geno Smith played against the Patriots, I think Mark may be onto something.

  3. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 14, 2013 5:12 PM

Unless Smith gets worse instead of better Sanchez will never walk on an NFL field again except to hold a clipboard if that.

The Jets are saying all the right things so they don’t look like they’re kicking the guy while he’s down, but he’s finished.

Whether any other team is crazy enough to give him a shot next season I don’t know. Far more foolish things have happened in the NFL.

Memo to Mark Sanchez: take advantage of the hot groupies while your still somewhat relevant! Geno or not he won’t start another Jet game again.

  17. cwk22 says: Sep 14, 2013 5:29 PM

Not likely. Smith did not play well. But he didn’t suck as bad as four year starter Sanchez does!

  19. eaglesnd18 says: Sep 14, 2013 5:29 PM

But in the mean time he is going to do his best eating hotdogs on the sidelines…..Maybe not eating hotdogs last year was the reason for the butt fumble.

  20. historyisyourfriend says: Sep 14, 2013 5:40 PM

Lost in all this is that Rex is basically doing job interviews for Defensive Coordinator when the Jets let him go. Jets defense so far has been doing a great job despite the offense putting them in one bad situation after another.

So Rex will most likely be gone at the end of this year, but will show up on some team next year as Defensive Coordinator and turn that defense into a top 10 unit.

Meanwhile some poor sap will take over as Head Coach for the Jets and get a front row seat on that train wreck that will be the J-E-T-S next year.

  21. cwk22 says: Sep 14, 2013 5:40 PM

I have no idea why this team does not start Matt Sims who played against better competition in the S.E.C., has a gun for an arm, is more accurate then Geno, and had a better pre-season. If Geno gets hurt, neither Suckchez or Geno will ever start again!

  34. kingpel says: Sep 14, 2013 6:11 PM

I hate to say this but Sanchez is obviously bitter and making these types of statements to keep controversy surrounding this team. If I was Rex Ryan I would cut him now.

  35. metalhead65 says: Sep 14, 2013 6:21 PM

Sanchez just does not get it. you are only still on the team because of your contract. they don’t you and are treating you pretty much the same way they did Tebow last year. no matter what you do you do not fit in their plans and will not see the field. tell them to shove it and have the surgery now so you can rehab and try and make another team next season. you won’t be able to do that if you are recovering from surgery after this season. if you are not smart enough to see that then you deserve whatever happens to you.

  36. GenXJay says: Sep 14, 2013 6:34 PM

Sanchez’s PFT article pic resembles a futbol player. Maybe he should try soccer.

The perfect person everyone should hate.

I could see Sanchez playing for the Titans when they wake up and realize Jake Locker is garbage. Lets see…..Minnesota possibly, Jacksonsville cuz their front office seems to be clueless. Tampa comes to mind also. He can be effective with a run game, which all those teams have or at least have potential to have. Some WR’s would help. Dude sucks but cmon, Santonio’s overrated though serviceable, Stephen Hill might be decent but the rest of that WR corp is a joke. He did have Keller though before this. A head coach who watches offensive gametape might have helped as well. I kinda hope he leaves the Jets comes back and hangs 300+ 3tds no ints but then again this mr butt fumble so…..

  47. datmilehighswagistoodamnhigh says: Sep 14, 2013 7:51 PM

  48. j0esixpack says: Sep 14, 2013 7:51 PM

That’s because Rex promised years ago that “as long as I am here Sanchez will be the starting QB”

And if Rex broke his word about that, his players may begin to doubt his ability to deliver the Super Bowls he guaranteed

Do you hate the Jets so much that it’s blinding you or did you not watch the game? Say what you want about Geno’s performance but looking like he wanted to go home when the game started is not one of the things you can accuse him of. He looked calm and poised for a kid playing in his second NFL game.

It’s amazing how all you idiots try to still make jokes about the Jets being a circus when they have done all the right things this year. Keep clinging on to old jokes just shows how you haven’t paid attention at all to the NFL this year.

  64. cmdrsmooth says: Sep 15, 2013 10:04 AM
