Meriweather strikes again, and knocks himself out of the game

AP

Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather now has used the crown of his helmet twice against opposing ball carriers.

The first time, he knocked Packers running back Eddie Lacy out of the game.  The second time, Meriweather knocked himself out.

With running back James Starks clearly outside the tackle box, Meriweather hit Starks in the helmet with the top of Meriweather’s helmet.  Under rules passed by the NFL in March, it’s supposed to be a violation.  It wasn’t called.

Starks also had dipped his helmet, but Starks did not deliver a blow with the top of the helmet.  Meriweather, who was one of the players who applied illegal helmet-to-helmet hits during a tight real-time window on October 17, 2010 (along with Dunta Robinson and James Harrison), could be facing multiple fines arising from Sunday’s game.

But Meriweather won’t be using his helmet again on Sunday.  The Redskins have announced that Meriweather has been ruled out for the rest of the game.

  1. Dude was out of control. Karma that Merriweather takes himself out of the game before he hurts even more people out there.

  2. Ill give you the Lacy hit, but Im sorry. Stop the agenda. Stark lowers his helmet and takes the incoming hit. It was not a dirty play, it was just stark dropping his shoulders to brace for the hit and inadvertently put his helmet in the way.

  3. Meriweather should be suspended and so should the refs in the game. Twice he did it with a ref not 15 feet away. Those aren’t the only fouls they missed either. I have no idea where these guys are looking, but hey, safety, right?

  4. When Meriweather played for the Pats he seemed more concerned about getting a hit that made the highlight reel than just doing his job…

    I’m glad they dumped him…

And yes he is a dirty player…

  5. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the “crown of the helmet” rule apply to running backs who lead with their crown outside of the tackle box, not defenders?

That being the case, Starks is lucky he didn’t get flagged or knocked the effe out….

  6. Rodgers on pace for 640 yds passing.

Too bad you can’t win a ring with a 40 year old at MLB, Overrated Corners, an Overrated QB that is not fully recovered from an injury, a RB that clearly benefitted from having a scrambling QB who everyone in the league has figured out cuts back cross field on every handoff, and the worst WR corps in football.

Otherwise this Skins team would be great.

  7. A simple hit out of bounds would have sufficed. This is a passing league and when you have old/average at best corners with rookie and bad safeties against an elite QB, there’s no chance.

Maybe RGIII can make a few more commercials..

    BTW… I’m a Redskins fan..

  8. Ahem, so, i heard Dan Snyder is the best owner, Shanahan is a genius for a coach and RG III walked, err i mean limped on water. All this #somethingstupidandillogicalhttrrg3slurpfest. Your defense is worse than your offense, and RG3 cant score on the packers d like Kaepernick did. Comparing the two is like a corolla with a bad wheel to a corvette.

  9. I thought there was no way the redskins could loose to the big G …. That’s right they are a first class origination and no one is better then broke rg3 haha not a better Sunday to me …GO PACK GO !!!!!!!!!

Okay. You’re wrong. The rule applies to both the ball carrier and the defender.

  11. @logicalvoicesinmy head

You were right! The season is not a sprint but is in fact a marathon or, in this case, a death march.

  12. The difference with the Starks hit was that no one was in front of Starks. Starks dropped his head to protect himself more, and Meriweather came from the side, leading with the helmet. He got his helmet in front of starks’ helmet, and got knocked out flat. Nice to see Karma bite the punk.

  13. First off this guy is not very bright, no really listen to him talk sometime. Second for repeat offenders of this rule suspensions should be levied, for his own good as much as opposing players. And for all the meatheads out there who want to claim it is part of the game… no you do not head into a tackle with the top of your helmet.

  14. The worst part about the Lacy hit was that Meriweather was excitedly jumping up and down after the play practically patting himself on the back (not too mention the fact that the play went for more than 10 yards and a first down).

  15. I had no idea who this idiot was….but I do now. Absolutely no reason to aim and target Lacy like he did. I hope Lacy comes back soon and Meriweather is fined $100,000.00.

  16. Meriweather $6 million= 2012 1 half 2013 1 half

    $6 million for 1 game

    Priceless

peytonsneck18 is a complete moron writing off RGIII 2 games into year 2 of his career. But hey, his name alone proves his intelligence. No class.

  17. Well… I picked the wrong week to tell niner fans “It’s football, there’s hits!”

now if I call out Meriweather on his garbage…hypocrite…

screw it, Meriweather is a cheapshot artist!

    Really??

  19. This guy needs to be suspended. He is an idiot. The hit on Lacy was spearing and then to do it again later in the game is ridiculous. If Merriweather is going to play like an idiot he shouldn’t be allowed to play.

  20. What I don’t understand is if this guy had a reputation of doing this ..why weren’t they keeping a closer eye on him. (Refs) they should have flagged him for the first hit that probably would have prevented the second hit

  21. I can see it now…Merriweather at 60,in a nursing home…incoherent…incontinent…needing around the clock care…all because he chose to be a dirty player a/k/a a cheap shot artist. As was stated in an earlier post…karma is a bitch!

  22. Does anyone else think that the Refs have been worse, in the start of this season, than I have ever seen in the history of the NFL? This game, the Seattle/San Francisco game, among others have been unbearable to watch. Maybe its the age of the Refs (are they too old and unable to see what’s going on in the game) or maybe they’re too comfortable with the new bargaining deal. Make it a competition, more than the NFL does, every year and maybe we’ll actually see “the best of the best.”

  23. Starks is a big boy. DB’s may want to think twice before taking him on in the open field at full speed. His running ability has never been in question. His ability to stay healthy is the issue.

Meriweather was clearly trying to hurt him. Stark saw him coming and put on him. I believe what starks did was completely fair because he didn’t turn to make contact with meriweather.

  24. Watched the game and saw both hits. He definitely was going after and trying to cause some kind of injury with his hits. I agree with most of the comments here. Karma’s a BI……

On a side note, whatever happened to (il)logicalvoice? Was hoping to read some of his infinite wisdom after the skins stank up and got their a$$ whopped at Lambeau Field yesterday.

    skins winning it all!!! Hilarious!!!

  25. Lacy will be back, but something does need to be done for those hits. Matthews was fined 15k for a hit which was kinda iffy… This guy has 2 hits that were clearly with the intent of hurting someone. After he took Lacy out he was dancing and all proud of himself… Then to try it again on Starks… I wish Meriweather would just learn to play correctly, he has talent… but doesn’t use it properly. Unfortunate for everyone involved, nobody should have gotten hurt PERIOD.

  26. Merriwhether crouched and launched himself like a missile straight on at Lacy’s head. At the risk of sounding like a Vikings fan I must criticize the refs for not doing their job on such an agregious foul. On the flipside if someone farts near a QB it’s a 15 yard penalty all day!
