Philip Rivers shines in Philly, Chargers nip Eagles 33-30

Philip Rivers AP

Time after time in the Chargers’ game against the Eagles, their offense faced a third down and put the ball into the hands of quarterback Philip Rivers.

Rivers delivered almost every single time and the Chargers are 1-1 after Nick Novak’s field goal with seconds to play gave them a 33-30 win over the Eagles. Rivers completed 12-of-13 passes on third downs over the course of the game, resulting in eight first downs and a touchdown with the Eagles handing the Chargers another conversion when safety Patrick Chung was flagged for holding. The last of those first downs set up Novak’s field goal as the Chargers moved the ball 51 yards in 104 seconds to win the game.

Rivers wound up throwing for 419 yards and three touchdowns to Eddie Royal, who now has five scores in the first two weeks. Antonio Gates added 124 yards on eight catches and Malcom Floyd had 102 in the first half before leaving the game with a neck injury suffered during a massive collision with linebacker DeMeco Ryans. The Eagles secondary was shredded all day long, with the safeties looking particularly bad, costing them a chance to go 2-0 behind an offense that percolated all afternoon.

Michael Vick threw for 428 yards and two scores and ran for another one in a very strong performance that only lacked for opportunities because of the defense. DeSean Jackson had nine catches for 191 yards and could have had even more if he and Vick hadn’t each made mistakes on a couple of deep balls when Jackson was behind the defense.  Jackson also picked up a 15-yard taunting penalty after Vick’s rushing touchdown, however, giving the Chargers prime field position to come back for a touchdown after the Eagles grabbed a short-lived 27-23 lead.

They have a short week to try to fix the defense before they renew acquaintances with Andy Reid on Thursday night.

Nice gut check win for the Chargers after what happened on Monday night. Going across country to beat the flavor of the week isn’t that easy.

Philly is a draft and a free agency class away from being a legit defense.

  5. wiitrainingcamp says: Sep 15, 2013 4:45 PM

Man, the Eagles defensive is hideous. About the only way they could stop the Chargers is if the receivers dropped passes or fumbled.

When you rely on your offense as much as the Eagles are going to this season, you have to know how to manage the clock. Chip didn’t take near enough time off of the clock before they scored, and it cost them the game. Anyone who didn’t see that finish coming a mile away is blind.

  15. yourmomsnewfriend says: Sep 15, 2013 4:53 PM

So, anyone have any idea why Chip Kelly started calling timeouts at the end like that? That was potentially one of the stupidest things I’ve seen this season.

  16. orivar says: Sep 15, 2013 4:56 PM

The offense is doing pretty well but that defense, that defense needs a bit more pieces.

Eagles changed from a 4-3 to a 3-4, have 9 new starters on D. Eagle fans expect games like this. Only idiot cowboy and redskin fans are crying about this team. Chip used the TO’s to try to at least touch the ball one more time. Had he not took the TO’s, SD would have ran the clock down to :02

  19. thesuddentruth says: Sep 15, 2013 5:04 PM

DeMeco Ryans you cheapshot worthless bum.

Way to play the defenseless exposed helmet with a lowered shoulder.

    You know what you did.

I think the ozzie osborne defense is better than the ben franklin

  21. nitro276 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:08 PM

The Eagles secondary is atrocious. Cary Williams is a big mouth with 3 pass interference penalties. Patrick Chung is marginal. Nate Allen cannot play.

On the other hand, Mychal Kendricks and Brandon Boykin are ballers.

I agree with the earlier poster that this team is a draft class and a free agency period away from a legit D.

  22. phillyboy8705 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:08 PM

  23. nitro276 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:10 PM

And one more thing, if Reid were still here, the Eagles would have gotten blown out today, instead it came down to a field goal. Chip can’t fix everything in one year.

  26. mancave001 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:18 PM

Tough game. Our pass defense was atrocious. Oh, and haters: I didn’t hear a soul talking about going to the SB last week, just like no one will be slamming Kelly this week.

  27. eaglefan94 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:18 PM

Yeah, lose one game by a field goal, so now the season is over.

Seriously though, the Chargers earned this victory, and it’s unfortunate that they probably won’t get a lot of credit for it: it will be all about the Eagles losing. Everyone saying that the “Chip Kelly offense” has been exposed apparently doesn’t realize that the game was lost due to stupid penalties, zero pressure on Rivers, many poor attempts at tackles, and the fact that Brandon Boykin is the only competent DB on the roster. I dread the game against the Broncos, Peyton is going to have a field day against that Swiss cheese secondary. Gotta get better!

    xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

So we now we know Dan Dierdorf’s screen name.

Yes, this was soooo stupid because they would have been much better off if they had to kick the FG from a whole 2 yards further and had the clock expire when it was good.

At least he gave his team a kick off and one play.

  29. fordmandalay says: Sep 15, 2013 5:36 PM

Everyone talking about how bad the Eagles D was, but how bad was the Chargers? I’ve never seen so many ridiculously wide open guys in my life, they made Vick look like the NFLs greatest passer ever – and he ain’t that. But to be fair to him, he played really well. Three or four more games and the Eagles will have the system down, and they’ll be dangerous.

  30. jbeagles23 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:37 PM

Two 30 point games and Vick McCoy and desean going off. Our offence is great. Defence is awful

  31. sbmcintosh36 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:43 PM

Isn’t every teams defense a draft and free agency away from legit?

  32. ambitoos says: Sep 15, 2013 5:43 PM

  34. richmondbolt says: Sep 15, 2013 5:44 PM

  35. phipfwe76 says: Sep 15, 2013 5:46 PM

What an embarrassing showing by my Eagles. Chargers had 10 possessions, and had to punt only once. Scored 7 times, and fumbled twice. Both of which they shot themselves in the foot after moving inside the Eagles 10. No question the Eagles D is terrible right now.

  36. gustwo says: Sep 15, 2013 5:48 PM

This team is an obvious work in progress. The defense has shortcomings that a quarterback of P. Rivers pedigree is going to exploit, and they face some of best quarterbacks in the league this season, so it’s not going to get any easier. Hopefully, somewhere around week 8 or so, the defense will gel a bit and be at least respectable. Until then, any wins will be decided totally by our offense. The team is a draft or two and some free agent acquisitions from being in the playoff mix.
And logicalvoicesays, your team is 0-2, so slowly step away from your mom’s computer, go back to your basement, eat your milk and cookies, take your meds, and let the adults on here discuss football.

Too funny, and how many points have that Redskin Potato team given up these first two games?? A crapload! I agree, you can’t expect Kelly to fix everything in two games, but I like the direction. The biggest thing he still must address (besides safety, since Nate Allen is horrendous) is the consistent mistakes and bonehead decisions that seem to happen every game. Jackson can’t commit that penalty after the TD. We’re not good enough yet to overcome such stupidity.

  38. bobsaget92 says: Sep 15, 2013 6:10 PM

Quite honestly as an eagles fan this loss didn’t hurt that bad. I must say I was pleased with the offenses play for the entire game. Vick missed a few but overall played a lights out consistent game. The D doesn’t have to be perfect If our O can play like this week in and week out

  39. TheWizard says: Sep 15, 2013 6:13 PM

Had the misfortune of listening to the Eagles radio broadcast while I finished installing some windows.

Jeez, that Merrill Reese is horrible. I know all teams have broadcasters and where their allegiance lies, but at least give the other team some credit man.

I love how Redskin fans are in complete denial. The Eagles look pretty good considering they completely overhauled a 4-12 team. It’s really common sense.

  45. bobsaget92 says: Sep 15, 2013 6:39 PM

Both teams defense played equally bad . Phillip rivers played one of the better games of his career and we lost a close one . It was a great game. Nothing to overhype about. We’ll stomp the chiefs on Thursday and this game will be a distant memory trust me.

Good win for the chargers, The eagles are a really tough team that will get better, and that is a good win for the Bolts. I’m a Broncofan so don’t love the Bolts but I am so sick of everybody saying the AFC West is the weakest division in football that I want the non, Broncos team to rock it out too! Beating a tough team like the Eagles is proof this is not a weak division!!!

  48. romosrevenge says: Sep 15, 2013 7:08 PM

  49. dannymac17 says: Sep 15, 2013 8:32 PM

After all that talk about how Rivers needs to be fixed he’s throwing better than ever. I think Rivers is back to his old form I don’t care how bad u think the eagles D is. He’s thrown one bad pass in 2 games. Way to go.

  50. somekat says: Sep 15, 2013 9:19 PM

Vick is awful (missed Jackson on 3 open deep passes. The dude just isn’t good. Period. There is no advantage to him playing. His only advantage over foles is his athletic ability, he runs maybe once a game, so that doesn’t matter.

Nate Allen is the worst S ever to play in the NFL

The Eagles offense is good. Their defense is horrendous. If this is what you consider a good team, raise the bar. Just because they beat an overhyped skins team, doesn’t make them good.

The Eagles are a 5-11/7-9 team. They are NOT a good team yet. Just a good offense

  52. 1trinieagle says: Sep 15, 2013 10:49 PM

Disappointing loss, O left too many points on the field , D continues to be a work in progress… Rivers brought his ” A” game today and led his team to victory… The Chargers were the better team today. I did not think we would go 16-0 this season and with my Favorite ex- Eagle H.C Coach Big Red in town with a Chiefs team that is confident after it’s 2-0 start we need to beat the Chiefs. Looking forward to MV7, Shady and DJax to impress our ex H.C with a victory.

  53. boltdaddy says: Sep 16, 2013 1:07 AM

the nfl east is overrated and over exposed, enough already with cbs/fox shoving nfc east down west coast viewer throats on early games. Give me the nfc central instead. Every year we put up with the same bs programming.

The nfc east sucks and has for a long while.
