Washington’s defense falters in loss at Green Bay

i-1

Here’s the good news for Washington: Mike Shanahan’s club will be no more than a game out of first place in the NFC East after the Eagles and Cowboys lost on Sunday.

On the other hand, the Redskins have looked vulnerable on their way to an 0-2 start.

The Packers rolled up 580 yards in a 38-20 victory against Washington on Sunday. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 480 yards and four touchdowns, completing 34-of-42 passes in the process. Receivers James Jones and Randall Cobb both exceeded 100 yards receiving, and Jordy Nelson caught a pair of TD passes.

Washington also struggled with Green Bay’s running game. James Starks gained 132 yards on 20 carries, becoming the first Packers runner to exceed 100 yards on the ground in nearly three years.

Washington’s offense turned in a better performance than the defense, but it did not score a point until the third quarter. By then, the Packers were well-ahead.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III played well-enough in his second game back from a knee injury, throwing for 320 yards and three scores. Running back Alfred Morris exceeded 100 yards on the ground, and receiver Pierre Garcon caught eight passes for 143 yards and a score.

Washington’s offense hasn’t perhaps hit its best stride just yet, but it is capable of keeping the team in games, especially if it can get warmed up a little earlier in the weeks to come. However, Washington has now surrendered 1,023 yards in two games. That’s problematic, to say the least.
