Harrison finally gets a chance to hit Roethlisberger

Harrison AP

On Monday night, the Steelers will return to Cincinnati.  As usual, linebacker James Harrison will be there.  Not as usual, Harrison will be playing for the Bengals.

Which means he’ll finally get a chance to hit some Steelers.  Specifically, their quarterback.

NBC’s Hines Ward, who played with Harrison in Pittsburgh, has said that no one could block Harrison in practice.

“We’ll test that theory tonight,” a Bengals source recently observed.

ESPN’s Jerome Bettis said that Harrison has even motivation than he’d have at a Steelers practice.

“He’s very upset about being tossed aside by the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Bettis said on the air.  “He wants to show them that he had a lot left.”

One guy Harrison isn’t upset with is defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.

“I miss him,” an emotional Harrison told ESPN’s Jon Gruden in a sit-down that has been airing as part of the SportsCenter infinite loop.

The Steelers may decide as of tonight that they miss Harrison, too.

    Go Steelers!

If the Bungals lose tonight, they’re looking at an 0-3 start, considering they play the pack next week.

Did Dick finally die? I never even heard about that.

  3. 8to80texansblog says: Sep 16, 2013 1:47 PM

And with Pittsburghs Oline all banged up… he probably will.

I read somewhere that Harrison sacked Big Ben 4 times in the last game of his (Ben’s) freshman year at Miami-Ohio. By my calculation it would also be Debo’s last game at Kent State before going to the pros.

  5. lovefootball4life says: Sep 16, 2013 1:53 PM

I wouldn’t want to be in between a pissed off James Harrison and the quarterback.

  6. CKL says: Sep 16, 2013 1:54 PM

LeBeau is all time great for sure, but Zimmer is no slouch either.

Funny thing about Harrison being mad he was “tossed aside”. I believe had he taken the pay cut Pitt offered him, he’d still be making more than he is now in Cincy.

  7. Stiller43 says: Sep 16, 2013 1:55 PM

“He’s very upset about being tossed aside by the Pittsburgh Steelers,…”

Umm pardon me, but James took LESS money than the Steelers had on the table for Harrison.

He was due to make ~6 mil, Steelers offered ~3-4 with incentives to get it back up to 6, he said no and took 1-2 from the Bengals…the Steelers didnt toss him aside. Harrison bet on himself being a hot name as a 35 yr old now oft-injured LB and lost.

I still love James though, and would cheer him voraciously in his return to the burgh.

  8. steelpenbucs87 says: Sep 16, 2013 1:55 PM

Steelers would be wise to run off the right tackle behind DeCastro, Gilbert, and Beachum to tire out Deebo a bit by forcing him to chase down ball carriers on the back side. Lots of 3 step timing patterns early to get the ball out quick and frustrate the Bengals front 7.

I’m not completely sold on the idea that the Steelers don’t have a shot, but they’ll need a solid game out of Adams to keep Deebo from terrorizing the Steelers offense.

  9. Kaz says: Sep 16, 2013 1:56 PM

All this talk of an easy Bengals victory and Harrison’s revenge has made me nervous as a Bengals fan. Much more comfy under the radar.

  10. tavisteelersfan says: Sep 16, 2013 1:56 PM

    LOL.
Manufactured Controversy. Harrison has been respectful of the Steelers since signing with the Bengals. He will play tough and nasty tonight, but he plays that way every night.

As for Pittsburgh protection … we’ll see who shows up.

  11. citizenstrange says: Sep 16, 2013 1:57 PM

Big Monday Night game tonight for the Steelers. It’s 11:00 AM PST six and a half hours before kickoff and I’ve already got my game face on. My dejected, incredulous, stupefied and depressed game face.

Will our $110 million dollar quarterback be able to crack the magical, mythical (for him at least) double digit scoring barrier? Or failing that, will he at least be able to score more than ZERO (as in 0.000%) points in the first 58 minutes and 37 seconds of the game?

Here’s hoping the Steeler defense can score a couple of defensive touchdowns and get the win! GO STEELERS!

  12. johnnybgood19 says: Sep 16, 2013 1:58 PM

  13. scaredhitless says: Sep 16, 2013 1:59 PM

Todd Haley will focus his game plan on stopping Harrison, scoring points be damned.

  15. steelerfanjo says: Sep 16, 2013 2:02 PM

Harrison was offered more money by the Steelers, so he has no reason for vengeance tonight. He is a typical athlete who, past his prime, wanted to cash in. It didn’t work out and he now plays for a joke of franchise in the Bungles. Cincy fans are incompetent, clueless and actually believe they have won the past 33 Super Bowls. I have been there numerous times for Steeler – Bengal games and these morons are the Miley Cyrus’s of the NFL – they actually think they matter. They don’t… at all.

  16. juzthadoginme says: Sep 16, 2013 2:14 PM

It seems weird…..but Im routing for Harrison…GO BUNGLES….!! WOOF WOOF

  17. holeinone09 says: Sep 16, 2013 2:14 PM

Yep, let’s see, it all comes down to Ben. Ben needs to play all 11 offensive positions I guess. He needs to get more than 32 yards rushing, needs to hold his blocks, and needs to get open to catch passes. Apparently there are no other players on offense except Ben. If you listen to some people, that is.

All that aside, I expect a tough game as usual between these rivals, and the Steelers have their work cut out for them due to injuries, etc. I expect the Steelers offense to use no-huddle extensively, maybe right off the bat, and to try some deep passes to spread the defense. But if the Steelers can’t run the ball, they will have a tough time winning. Brady and Rogers couldn’t win behind that OL with no running game either.

    GO STEELERS!!

  21. audient says: Sep 16, 2013 2:26 PM

The trash talk is kinda sad, especially if he doesn’t back it up.

But on the other hand, if Harrison gets to Big Ben, then that would be something to talk about.

    So, James, go get him!

  22. rottenbellybutton says: Sep 16, 2013 2:29 PM

Tonight’s the night ben starts cringing and comes down with a “so-called” injury. This clown loves the attention and it will excuse his poor play. Baby ben never gets the blame when it comes to a steeler loss, but gets all the credit when they squeak one out. If ben’s as great as the yinzers make him out to be, he’ll put the team on his back and lead them to victory. The D is gonna do their job let’s see if the elite franchise qb can do his. I don’t want to hear about injuries, every team suffers through them.

  23. rutchaser says: Sep 16, 2013 2:29 PM

Just tell Marvin to get the right number of guys on the field and don’t call early timeouts. Basically I wish Marvin would just stay out of the team’s way. I hate that he’s the coach of the team I root for.

As for James…his best days are behind him but Burfict is a different story.

  26. Deb says: Sep 16, 2013 2:36 PM

So tired of people misrepresenting how Harrison came to leave the Steelers. He was under contract and asked to take a significant paycut. I doubt most of the people criticizing him would have jumped up and said, “Yeah, boy!” if asked to take a significant paycut. When you’re an elite athlete, it’s tough to realize your value has diminished.

After looking around and realizing he had no takers, James came back ready to deal and the Steelers refused to talk with him. I love my team, but that was shoddy behavior. So yes, he wound up with the Bengals for less money than the Steelers originally offered. Again, I doubt those who claim he could have avoided this would have jumped at a giant paycut the second it was offered because their crystal balls told them they’d wind up making less if they didn’t.

I hope James has a great year … but not tonight.

  27. ziggy26 says: Sep 16, 2013 2:40 PM

This seems like a media manufactured storyline to me. While it’s true that the Steelers parted ways with Harrison, it’s not like they kicked him to the curb. They did offer him a pretty good deal, and one that fit with the cap demands they faced.

Harrison made a business decision to turn down that deal and seek employment elsewhere.

Plus, Harrison’s not the type of guy that needs extra motivation to play good football.

  28. wingsdings says: Sep 16, 2013 2:40 PM

Look for the Steelers to chop block Harrison early and often.

  29. sellout1983 says: Sep 16, 2013 2:42 PM

Harrison has actually hit Ben before while he was at Kent State and Big Ben was at Miami University.

  30. steelcurtainn says: Sep 16, 2013 2:43 PM

Harrison was hardly “run off” by the Steelers. They offered him a fair contract reduction, he balked at the offer, the Steelers cut him and he signed elsewhere for half the amount the Steelers offered him.

Harrison has yet to prove that he is recovered yet, and his first game with the Ben-gals was pedestrian at best. We’ll see if facing his old teammates pumps him up or if Ben will make him look silly as he does to so many LBs.

  47. hines86for6 says: Sep 16, 2013 5:03 PM

Nope nope nope. Harrison was asked to take a pay cut from 6 mill a yr to 4 mill. he declined and then took a 2 mill a yr contract with the Bengals. He was actually treated quite as his final signing amount on the open market indicates.

  48. stillers213 says: Sep 16, 2013 5:17 PM

Our best chance for winning this game is to open it up ’05 playoff run style. Watching the Chargers yesterday made me miss the Whiz even more. I know it’s not the Steeler way to start rookies right away, but we have to stretch the field and get Wheaton on the field much more than the last game.

Note to Haley: You are allowed to design plays that roll the pocket and buy more time for your QB!

  49. twpguy1964 says: Sep 16, 2013 5:31 PM

Fact of the matter James is, you and your agent thought you were smart and it turns out you were pretty stupid! You didnt want to leave Pittsburgh but neither one of you had the balls to make sure that happened. Pittsburgh paid you tons of cash, and defended you when you were beating your woman, how did you reward them when they asked you to restructure your deal? You threw a hissy fit and here you are now. You’re nothing anymore but a mouth, same as another former Steeler great, which you WERE, Joey Porter when he left

Come on, don’t be whiny just because you got stuck with a bottom-dweller team known for nothing outside of being the better of two garbage Ohio teams, a cheap-skate owner that 3/4 of the team’s own fanbase can’t stand, and being tied for the largest number of player arrests since the new millennium. Sky’s the limit, right?
