Steelers’ Isaac Redman exits with injury on opening kickoff

Pittsburgh Steelers' Redman narrowly misses a pass during their NFL football game against the Tennessee Titans in Nashville Reuters

Already thin at running back, the Steelers suffered another blow on the opening kickoff.

Isaac Redman, Pittsburgh’s starting running back, appeared to suffer a head injury on the opening kickoff and was escorted to the locker room with the team’s medical staff. The team announced that he was being evaluated for a possible concussion, and that his return is questionable.

The Steelers lost running back LaRod Stephens-Howling to a season-ending injury in Week One, and running back Le’Veon Bell is currently out with a foot injury.

Now the Steelers will need to rely even more on running back Felix Jones. In the first quarter, Jones had a 14-yard run on third-and-18 that got Pittsburgh into range for a Shaun Suisham 44-yard field goal, which gave Pittsburgh a 3-0 lead.

UPDATE 9:30 p.m. ET: The Steelers announced during the second quarter that Redman has been cleared to return.

    Addition by subtraction.

Next man up. Here we go Steelers, here we go!

Hopefully for the Steelers Felix Jones will be good, but to put it in perspective he got beat out by a second year undrafted free agent in Chris Polk in Philly.

  5. blacknole08 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:17 PM

Also on the opening kickoff, Felix Jones had spun the football after his return. That should have been a penalty under the new rules.

  6. steelers88 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:18 PM

Steelers SUCK! they need to rebuild and until they realize that they are going to SUCK!

  7. mvpolamalu says: Sep 16, 2013 9:20 PM

All pro center- out for year
Pro bowl tight end- out a few more weeks
3 of the 5 running backs- out
Defensive captain/starting linebacker- out for season

I hate to complain about injuries but c’mon this is ridiculous.

  8. runtheball says: Sep 16, 2013 9:21 PM

Play calling sux! Guys like Ike Redman and Ryan Clark that don’t belong on an NFL roster. Velasco looks good at least.

  9. fc187 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:23 PM

Where do they get these guys a glass factory?

  10. koenig61 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:24 PM

It’s not a penalty for spinning the ball, unless you do it to taunt another player, just spinning it isn’t a penalty. Many players have spun the ball this season. Refs discretion if its done to taunt.

  11. citizenstrange says: Sep 16, 2013 9:27 PM

Well ZERO points by Big Bum in the 1st quarter. The field goal was due to the punt return field position without a first down by the so-called offense.

  12. loyalraven says: Sep 16, 2013 9:28 PM

Without their usual daily dose of team fed HGH injections the Steelers are brittle

  13. kingpel says: Sep 16, 2013 9:29 PM

Then the Steelers chances of winning just improved.

  14. realitycheckbaby says: Sep 16, 2013 9:32 PM

Two really bad and totally inconsequential teams.

    This is brutal to watch.

Too bad we can’t replay last night’s game.

  15. jmblosser82 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:40 PM

I agree with redman is a waste if a roster spot, but highly disagree with Clark, he still has plenty in the tank.

  16. Deb says: Sep 16, 2013 9:40 PM

You know it’s a bad night when your QB needs lessons from Tony Romo on how to hustle to the line and run a freakin’ play before a challenge flag is thrown. C’mon, man!!!

  17. bignugs says: Sep 16, 2013 9:41 PM

It really doesn’t matter at this point. They could have Jim Brown in the backfield but without Pouncey that O-line is horrible. Until that gets fixed they will continue to have one of the worst offenses in the league. Ben is good at improvisation but even that requires time. It’s amazing how people here in Pittsburgh still think they have a chance.

Did anyone on the east coast even watch that game? 29-2 doesnt sound like a great game unless you just hate the 49ers.

ESPN goes to commercial with 1 sec to go in 1st QT. Then comes back runs 1 play then back to commercial. Any one else fed up with this crap? COME ON MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steelers haven’t won since they started testing for PEDs.

  22. jmblosser82 says: Sep 16, 2013 9:55 PM

Paulson fumble hurt, Ben with 2-3 bad throws, and the receivers dropping a few. I think they already surpassed last weeks rush total.

  23. beavertonsteve says: Sep 16, 2013 9:57 PM

Tirico just called the Redskins the “Washingtons”. I turned off the game.

@DEB. It wasnt bens fault deb. he wanted to call a play, but the sidelines decided to substitute offensive players, and once they did that, the defense is allowed to substitute. Ben was up there ready to snap the ball.

Isn’t this the first year your team doesn’t have a felon as MLB? Crickets skippy….?

Liking what I am seeing from Jarvis Jones. Ben needs to keep up the intensity of the TD drive if they want any chance on a W.

  30. j0esixpack says: Sep 16, 2013 10:22 PM

You still gotta wonder about all these early season injuries

Kindof seems like the NFLPA did their members no favors when they prohibited adequate offseason training

  31. Deb says: Sep 16, 2013 10:35 PM

    @koenig61 …

I’ll rewatch the DVR later and see who should be the subject of my irritation because someone seriously screwed up in that moment.

And Mike Carey is the biggest boob in the officiating corps.

  33. Nofoolnodrool says: Sep 16, 2013 10:44 PM

Time to settle down steeler fans…..this team is going to take sometime jelling. D looks good…Ben needs to take over and carry the o …now!

  34. kuantan97 says: Sep 16, 2013 11:01 PM

Gruden just took over-the-top to a whole new level. He said that Ike Taylor is the NFL’s best corner the past ten years. That would be better than Revis, Baily and Nmandi. Really, Chuckie? Really?

  35. Joemontanaflacco says: Sep 16, 2013 11:40 PM

What does jelling mean? Turning into Jello? Hahahahaha! Cheers!

  36. scaredhitless says: Sep 17, 2013 12:49 AM

“And Mike Carey is the biggest boob in the officiating corps.”

Walt Coleman, Jeff Triplette, Ron Winter are bigger boobs. They’re like Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini – overrated and terrible.

  37. xgarcia22 says: Sep 17, 2013 3:25 AM

Can somebody please come up with another word besides “jelling?”

  38. blackngold4life says: Sep 17, 2013 11:26 PM

Ben’s not the brightest tool in the shed. And yesterday was terrible. The window is closing fast

  39. blackngold4life says: Sep 17, 2013 11:48 PM

“Jelling” my ass..Everything is out of Whack! From the HIGHLY paid QB..to the 3 Three 1st round Offensive Lineman that end up on the ground 70% of the time..to the Front 7 who gave up Another 100 yards againts the run. Steelers really need to consider Trading their 1st 4 draft picks next off-season to get some PROVEn vets ! some Mfs With a pro bowl caliper background..Damn PLAYMAKERS! Even KC had 6 Pro Bowlers..All we got is the William Gays..Emanuel Sanders..and Issac Redmans of the world. For some strange reason this FRANCHISE refuses
to EVOLVE. with today’s NFL. LOL but I
forget “Its the Steelers Way” This ain’t
the 70s They not fina have another Miraculous Draft class
