Falcons D takes a hit, Weatherspoon to short-term IR

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Vick spins away from Atlanta Falcons defender Weatherspoon during the fourth quarter of their NFL football game in Philadelphia Reuters

The Falcons didn’t have much margin of error on defense to begin the season, and they’re quickly losing it.

For the second day in a row, their defense has taken a major hit, with star linebacker Sean Weatherspoon being placed on injured reserve/designated for return.

Weatherspoon left Sunday’s win over the Rams with a foot sprain, which was apparently far more serious than originally feared.

This would at least allow him to make a comeback for the final month of the season and the playoffs, but it’s a hard spot to fill until then.

The Falcons placed defensive end Kroy Biermann on season-ending IR yesterday, and can’t afford many more hits.

Seems like about twice as many serious injuries this year as normal.

The players need to realize by cutting back off season strength and conditioning in the recent CBA that they’ve screwed themselves by doing so. I believe a lot of these injuries are because of lower conditioning levels than in the past.

    bummer.
    That is all…

This from a Saints fan, sorry for your loss. I wanted you guys at full strength when the “who dats” kick your arse in your own house.

And now the Miami Dolphins will definitely be 3-0……..

Seems to be more of these foot injuries this year, doesn’t it?

  6. FinFan68 says: Sep 17, 2013 1:05 PM

Injuries suck. I would much rather watch the teams when they are full strength. Too much has to be modified if a key player goes down.

I think the CBA practice restrictions have something to do with some of the injuries. (Keller’s and similar injuries have nothing to do with conditioning though)

Falcons were already thin on D and now have lost two of their most versatile, top players. It’s looking like it will be much harder for them to reach the playoffs much less repeat as division winners at this point.

Only if they figure out how to deal with TEs like Gonzalez and the secondary gets healthy quick. I like the Dolphins’ chances but those two areas will tell the tale.

    Wetherspoon, Biermann, Jackson, White, Ewing.

Falcons have been decimated already. They lost the good parts of their O-line during the off-season too.

That Rams/Falcons game was brutal for injuries. Saffold (shocker) and Matt Daniels for the Rams and Biermann,Witherspoon,Ewing for the Falcons. Tough breaks for both teams.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Been a pretty healthy team the last couple years for the most part. Tis the nature of the beast. ATL will Rise Up, and make the most of what they have!

Falcons are just trying to upset the Saints with defensive inquiries.

  13. edsbay says: Sep 17, 2013 1:48 PM

Other than Brent Grimes last year the Falcons have virtually had no major injuries in the last 3 seasons and it was time some bad luck rolled there way.

I beleive last year was the year to win it all and this year will be dissapointing where they will probably lose some of the games they won last year on final drives and field goals and what not.

Games coming up: Miami, NE, and NYJ before the bye which couldn’t come at a better time by week 6. All the games by the way Falcons will win.

  15. finscanes says: Sep 17, 2013 2:05 PM

I’ll be at the game. Looking forward to seeing Grimes play with a chip on his shoulder after ATL not trusting his comeback. Julio will be a tough cover though, the guy’s an absolute beast.

Oh Lawd! I think the Saints just scored again! Big brutha gonna beat dat ass in your half filled ‘dome’…not as if that would be anything other than normal!

Shoulda took advantage of last year’s good fortune Atlanta. Won’t be so lucky this year!

  18. salmen76 says: Sep 17, 2013 2:51 PM

The Falcons can’t win a championship with all their starters. How could they possibly win one missing some of them. Too funny. The Falcons will never win a championship. Its just the natural order of things. Ha Ha! Geaux Saints!

Amazing how many falcons are feeling the effect of that butt-whooping the Saints put on them. Just hope droppy white and the rest aren’t “hurt”, again, when we come to to town on 11/21 to take your team to the woodshed, again.

  20. goawayeverybody says: Sep 17, 2013 2:53 PM

The Falcons are a very solid team, but one wonders if they can survive the middle stretch of the season with all these injuries. Once they get Steven Jackson back, then Weatherspoon, they will return to being a very strong team, but without those two, on top of the Biermann injury, I’m not sure they will end the season above 500.

I see the Dolphins beating them this weekend.

Butt whopping? Taking to the woodshed? The game was 24-17 and the Falcons were in the redzone with a chance to tie at the end of the game you nimrod. Let me guess..they also took the Buc’s to the woodshed with a resounding 16-14 victory, right?

Sorry to inform fellow saints fans, but Weatherspoon could be back by week 11. Saints play falcons week 12.

  25. salmen76 says: Sep 17, 2013 4:31 PM

Oh, the saints are so scared of “Weatherspoon”! That’s funny. Weatherspoon is like 42 years old. Matty ice freezes in the red zone! ha ha! just like Falcons fans saying, ‘oh, yall didn’t blow us out, we were at the goal line”. Ha Ha. Too funny. And that’s where yall stayed. At the goal line. Ha ha. How was that plane ride back to atlanta. Bet is was LONG. Ha Ha. Geaux Saints!

Weatherspoon is on IR again……Really? What a surprise! This guy can’t stay on the field.

Yeah, considered a butt whipping by only scoring 17 points against a team that up to that point, had the worst defense statistically in league history.

  29. aintshater says: Sep 17, 2013 6:25 PM

Aunts fans are laughable! And not very bright. If not for Stephen Jackson dropping the winning TD pass at the end of the game the good guys win in N.O.. As for the rematch, it will be just like last year’s beatdown when Brees threw FIVE interceptions! Another blowout! Rise up!!!

  30. salmen76 says: Sep 17, 2013 9:47 PM

Hey aintshater, if “if” was a skiff we’d all go for a boat ride. Falcons have ifs every play every season. Like in only “if” they had a SB ring! Ha ha! Jackson and gonzalez and matty ice choked. Geaux Saints!
