The 49ers knew they were going to have a roster spot when nose tackle Ian Williams suffered a broken ankle Sunday night, so they used it on one of coach Jim Harbaugh’s old favorites.
The team announced they signed fullback Owen Marecic Tuesday to fill the roster spot created when Williams was placed on injured reserve.
Marecic, a former fourth-round pick of the Browns, was cut this summer after two seasons there.
The 49ers already have a fullback in Bruce Miller (who was called for holding in the end zone Sunday night, resulting in a safety). But Marecic is the kind of versatile player coaches fall for. He started at linebacker as well for Harbaugh in college, and could help bolster their special teams.
