Ian Williams to IR, 49ers sign Owen Marecic

Owen Marecic AP

The 49ers knew they were going to have a roster spot when nose tackle Ian Williams suffered a broken ankle Sunday night, so they used it on one of coach Jim Harbaugh’s old favorites.

The team announced they signed fullback Owen Marecic Tuesday to fill the roster spot created when Williams was placed on injured reserve.

Marecic, a former fourth-round pick of the Browns, was cut this summer after two seasons there.

The 49ers already have a fullback in Bruce Miller (who was called for holding in the end zone Sunday night, resulting in a safety). But Marecic is the kind of versatile player coaches fall for. He started at linebacker as well for Harbaugh in college, and could help bolster their special teams.

90% chance Marecic dropped the pass from the photo attached.

Tough kid and good college player but he couldn’t catch crabs in a Tijuana brothel. Not much of an NFL-caliber blocker either.

Yeah cuz that makes sense. Loose a NT sign a FB that is the only player from stanford that you decided not to draft that ended up sucking. I love the Niners but sometimes we get these jenk…I mean head scratchers

I like this signing! Marecic is a football player, plain and simple. He may not see the field much outside of special teams but you can always use depth.

Considering Miller had 2 drops, a ton of missed blocks and holding penalty in the end zone for a safety in their 3-29 pasting by the Seahawks, this isn’t much of a surprise.

Now if only they could get 3 better receivers, they’d have a chance to beat the Seahawks.

Okay, that was a joke. They haven’t got a prayer.

Correction: They haven’t got a prayer to beat the Seahawks.. IN SEATTLE. When these teams meet in SF in December, Seattle will lose..

    I’m a huge Browns fan but…

is picking up all those Cleveland Browns really working out for you San Fran?

  8. salsendardo says: Sep 17, 2013 3:57 PM

He is honestly the worst player in the entire NFL.

Well that seems more helpful to DL than Casey Hampton or Shaun Cody…

Pass on signing Doug Baldwin, pass on drafting Richard Sherman and draft Chris Culliver instead.

Now sign Owen? A bit late Jimmy?

You know after $herm took Boldin out of the game
Jimmy was boiling inside on how dumb he is. Coach the best CB in the NFL and your new rival drafts him. Love it!

Seattle was missing 2 of our best pass rushers and starting CB. Lets throw in the fact LT Okung went down in 1st (Al. Smith didn’t just go superhuman) and Percy Harvin will play in December. Payback is always nice but don’t hold your breath for December because that will be a war. Time for your team to focus on the Colts. 1-2 and having to play in this division is a nightmare.

    Jayhawk :

We never passed on signing Baldwin..he chose Seattle because he thought he had a better shot at making their team.

Also how do you know we passed on drafting Sherman ? Do you know where he and Sherman were each ranked on the 49ers draft board ?

    Please use facts not assumptions.

Man at least do some research on your own player. Harbaugh didn’t pass on Baldwin. He went to Seattle because he felt there would be more opportunity to get on the field

Dear Seattle. Everything about your city, your team and your internet trolling is RIDICULOUS.

IF that ridiculous football team of cheaters, cheap shot artists, dope fiends and chest-thumpers ever gets to hoist the Lombardy trophy, then you can rightfully talk trash.

Until then, you look, um ridiculous.

Keep in mind – there are a lot of fans on this site who’s teams have actually won a Super Bowl.

And another thing. The more you ridiculous Seattle fans scream and make it nearly impossible for opponents to run their offense, the closer you get to bringing back the excessive crowd noise rule and penalty.

Keep screaming you ridiculous fools! It will come back to bite you.

I would have preferred Richard Seymour

An article in today’s SF Chronicle speculates that the Seahawks and the Rams have mastered reading the 49ers signals

Seems possible, no defense is THAT effective
Looking forward to the rematch in Candlestick
    Nothing like a good rivalty

Talk to me when the zero-niners prove they can score more than 13 points on our defense. In fact, don’t talk to me until they prove they can score a touchdown.

Keep yucking it up PEDhawk fans. I’m actually enjoying it. Your team travels worse than an NBA Center.

@wilsonwillbreakyou… Mastered what? 2 games the seahawks have beat the 9ers in what 3 seasons? Yeah masterful job. They mastered the 9ers last year but where were your hawks during the superbowl? At home watching!!

Seems like the loss still hurts. A lot of butt hurt Forty whiner fans feeding each other’s delusions. Say what you want, but your QB absolutely FEARS the Seahawks.
