MCL sprain for Saffold, but no surgery required

Rodger Saffold AP

Though it hardly qualifies as breaking news, the Rams are apparently going to have to prepare to be without Rodger Saffold this week.

The oft-injured right tackle was taken off the field with a knee injury Sunday against the Falcons, and according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, he has a sprained MCL. No surgery is required, but he is expected to miss this week’s game with the Cowboys.

After starting every game at left tackle as a rookie in 2010, the former second-rounder missed 13 games the last two seasons.

He didn’t seem thrilled when they went out and signed Jake Long to take over the left tackle job this offseason, but it’s hard to blame them, since it’s hard to plan on him being in the lineup every week. Joe Barksdale took over for him against the Falcons.

He has ZERO chance of being with the team next year. He is seemingly hurt every game. I just remember on Sunday when the announcer said “There is an injured Ram” I knew it was him before they even announced it.

Hopefully this won’t interfere with Fisher’s annual quest for .500

I am sure Rams fans would welcome a .500 record after putting up with the Steve Spagnuolo and Scott Linehan years.

today we picked up a lineman off waivers who played 2 snaps last year and got a penalty on each one now I am comforted. 1 snap 1 illegal motion snap 2 holding jeez

I remember how promising he looked as a rookie. Its unfortunate injuries ruined his career. Barksdale looked decent against the Falcons so he can probably hold up for the rest of the year. Maybe is the Redskins keep losing we can grab Jake Mattews in the draft.

It seems like since they took LT away from him he’s all of a sudden injury prone. please don’t resign this guy next year. Puulease!

It’s not just the injuries, but his overreaction to them. He makes a jammed thumb seem like a torn ACL with a broken neck. See ya Roger.

Barksdale is the better player to begin with. I don’t expect Saffold to reclaim the job even once “healthy”, and I use that term loosely in his case.

Two first round draft picks next year…at least one needs to be an offensive tackle.
