New league policy forces Bucs to scrap Bucco Bruce throwbacks

Bucco Getty Images

The Buccaneers had planned to break out the Bucco Bruce uniforms on Sunday, September 29, against the Cardinals.

Now, not.

The NFL has a new helmet policy that strongly urgres players to wear the same helmet all year long.  Given the dramatic contrast between the current pewter helmet and the white helmet on which the Bucco Bruce decal resides, the Buccaneers have decided they can’t pull off the alternate uniform.

“We are excited to celebrate and honor the Hispanic heritage that has had such a profound impact on our community,” Buccaneers Chief Operating Officer Brian Ford said in a team-issued release.  “While we regret that our players will not be able to don the ‘Bucco Bruce’ helmet and traditional orange, red and white uniforms, there simply was no acceptable way to meet the requirements of the new policy while staying true to the spirit of our throwback theme.  We will continue to explore options with the league office for bringing back this fan favorite in future seasons.”

The policy surely will affect other teams with throwback uniforms based on a helmet of a different color.  The Patriots, for example shift from silver to white for the old uniforms with Pat Patriot preparing to snap the ball.  The Falcons go from black to red.  The Redskins, in 2012, swapped out burgundy for a brown helmet with a simulated leather finish.

In Week Two, both the Bears and Bills wore throwback uniforms, but with the same helmets.  For Chicago, the “C” logos were removed.  For Buffalo, the current Bills logo was replaced with the stationary buffalo from the 1960s.

Rules upon rules upon rules upon rules, and rules created for rules about rules. Absent a finding that you can’t make a safe bucco bruce helmet, why?

As much as I don’t like the Bucs, I rather like the retro orange, and the fact that teams break out their retros now and then. But NOPE!! Not no more.

And frankly, this is worded like a “preference” that will be enforced as a “rule”. To which I find more insulting than just straight up calling it a rule.

The NFL product continues to go downhill as they chase every conceivable penny. For safety sake (concussion lawsuit fear), you have to wear the same helmet all year?? But it is perfectly OK, to drag the players back for Thursday games after Sunday.

And now they play Thursday starting right after week one, when the players were spent from playing their first real game of the season the Sunday before? And we all saw how pathetic the football was that night. But hey, they made a few more bucks.

  48. bcgreg says: Sep 17, 2013 5:35 PM

While I agree with your issue on the uniforms, how bout you go stand on a very large, basically flat surface, wearing a whole lot of metal while it’s lightning around you. If there is lightening within several miles, the possibility of lightning at the stadium is actually rather high, so storm delays are not over the top.

  52. nypd1056 says: Sep 17, 2013 5:42 PM

It has nothing to do with the color, its the safety thats built into the new helmets. Order the new helmets in white and put the old logo’s on them.

  56. jgedgar70 says: Sep 17, 2013 5:52 PM

No issue in my eyes. The only throwback uniformI have ever liked was New England’s. (Yes, I hate the Chargers powder blue too – looks way too much like the UNC Tar Heels, who I also hate.) Good riddance.

And while we’re talking uniforms, can Roger please issue an edict that whenever the Panthers wear their black jerseys, they have to wear black pants? Looks much better than the silver ones.

  59. beavertonsteve says: Sep 17, 2013 6:08 PM

So “throwback” is now basically limited to prior unis with the same color scheme? I’m pretty sure the Rams aren’t going to wear dark blue helmets with metalic tan-gold horns on a uniform that is royal blue and yellow.

I think teams should just wear the god-awful combos until the NFL gives in.

  60. eagles512 says: Sep 17, 2013 6:14 PM

  61. conquerpeace4d says: Sep 17, 2013 6:28 PM

This makes no sense. Buffalo also has dark colored current helmets and a white throwback and they wore their throwbacks this past weekend. Either they were able to repaint in white and the Bucs couldn’t figure it out, or, much more likely, they just ordered up brand new helmets in white.

  66. cballlv11 says: Sep 17, 2013 7:27 PM

There are multiple companies such as “Skin It” that make custom, stick on covers for any piece of gear that you want, from phones to laptops to cars and airplanes… If these teams can’t figure out how to get an existing helmet skinned with graphics that they already own the rights to, then those teams are very stupid.

  67. sportsean1 says: Sep 17, 2013 7:47 PM

“This makes no sense. Buffalo also has dark colored current helmets and a white throwback and they wore their throwbacks this past weekend. ”

Buffalo switched to White helmets starting in 2011, they haven’t worn the Red Helmets since the end of the 2010 season

All they did was swap the decals on their helmets.

  70. kingdouglasofc says: Sep 17, 2013 9:06 PM

Yeah Skin It is not a viable option here, try covering a globe-like object with a flat piece of paper without any bubbles, or cornering going on. It can’t be done, at least not without applying several different decals to cover the helmet.

The only viable option (while complying with this new suggestion that is being enforced like a rule) is to paint it. Its extremely easy to paint a helmet White, the problem would be then replicating the Pewter effect after the throwback game.

Most teams only paint their helmets the same color, and even that is no longer done in-house (ND was the only school still re-painting their helmets until they went to their new golden domes). This stuff is done at factories now, and in most cases the shells themselves are colored a certain way so there is no paint required anyways.

  71. kingdouglasofc says: Sep 17, 2013 9:20 PM

I’d like to see stats that prove this rule is needed, I mean has there been an increase of concussions for teams when they wear throwbacks in recent years or is this being overly-cautious?

The Bears, Bills, and Steelers (also the Lions but they only wear those occasionally on Thanksgiving) are the only teams that don’t require paint jobs to transform their normal helmets into their throwback helmets. Conversely the Packers, Rams, Redskins, Patriots, Cowboys, Falcons, and the Buccaneers, all have Throwbacks that are currently their alternates who would require a paint job or in some cases new shells entirely.

Its seems the easy fix for this is to have them rotate helmets throughout the year in practice. Have them wear the throwback shells at least once every week in practice and then have them wear them all week the week before the game(s). I get there is a legitimate concern for concussions that comes with wearing one helmet all year long and then swapping out for another one (like I said at the top of this comment I’m not sure the concern is backed up by evidence from recent years), but it seems that can easily be combated by regularly rotating the helmets.

  72. kingdouglasofc says: Sep 17, 2013 9:28 PM

At least some of the throwbacks teams can still have that same vibe while keeping their shells and swapping out decals and/or facemasks.

For instance just take off the stripes and logo off the Packers helmets and swap the green facemasks for blue ones or grey ones and the Packers would actually look better (That is unless they were/are planning on adopting the feaux-leather print that the Redskins wore last year). And while the Rams current blue is drastically different from the blue they used on their jerseys previously, its not that far off from the blue they used for their old helmets, if they could find a way to apply yellow horns to the helmets, or paint them on that could work.

I’m just bummed the Falcons won’t be wearing those Red Helmets anymore, love that throwback look, and wouldn’t mind them going back to those helmets full-time.

  73. BH says: Sep 17, 2013 11:55 PM

I totally don’t understand the ruling here. I totally love the Buccaneers Bucco Bruce helmet in the orange uniforms. I’m sick and tired of them trying to turn the NFL back into the (No Fun League). Ironic, they still allow the ridiculous pre-rehearsed dances they do, but they can’t wear throwback uniforms are right anything on their shoes. Personally, I’d be fine with them allowing just high-fives, spikes or spinning of the ball, but these ridiculous dances have just become simply stupid and lacking in any kind of fun that makes football interesting. The dancing I can live without, but spinning the ball and not able to wear throwback jerseys anymore or helmets? Too much control and Roger Goodell is getting a little power-hungry for me.

Stupid! Just stupid! It’s a front. Don’t tell me about players safety when you’ve schedule Thursday night games all year this season. And they want to add a 18 game season. A joke!

  77. hoppylegs says: Sep 18, 2013 8:12 AM

For those of us who grew up following the NFL in the 1970’s and 1980’s, these old helmets and uniforms are great to see, especially unique and colorful ones like the Tampa Creamsicle and the Chargers’ powder blues, or classics like the old Patriots and Oilers.

I’ll literally watch an old NFL highlight just because I like seeing Tampa Bay’s old uniform. It makes me feel young, and I was looking forward to eventually seeing 80’s-era throwback helmets for teams like the Seahawks, Broncos and Jets. (Admittedly, some old unis don’t do it for me, like the original Jets/Titans uniforms, or the blue and yellow Eagles, but others might really appreciate them.)

I really do hope they figure out a way to get around this soon.

  78. trilbilly says: Sep 18, 2013 11:30 AM

When it comes to Motorcycle Helmets, most manufacturers recommend you replace the helmet if you’ve had an impact, whether it appears damaged or not. Based on that it seems like an NFL player should be changing his helmet at halftime and never wearing it again.

  79. onebucplace says: Sep 18, 2013 3:24 PM

To all the morons saying they’re too cheap to buy a second helmet, please be less stupid and actually read the article:

“The NFL has a new helmet policy that strongly urgres players to wear the same helmet all year long.”

That means they want players using 1 helmet for the entire season.

With that said the NFL is becoming unwatchable with their WWF referees and their completely limp wristed ways on everything else. This is what happens when you get an ambulance chaser in charge of anything, he’s more concerned about not getting sued than putting an interesting product on the field. I assure you, this is only the beginning, it will only get much much worse and then the NFL will wonder why their ratings are in a downward spiral. It will take a few years, but it will happen. Speaking of wrestling, if Vince wanted to start the XFL now would have been the time to do it – you missed it by a decade or so.
