Brandon Meriweather fined $42,000

It’s been a busy week for fines around the NFL and Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather has been added to the list of players punished for hits last weekend.

Mike Jones of the Washington Post reports that Meriweather has been fined $42,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Packers running back Eddie Lacy that left Lacy with a concussion. Meriweather later delivered another blow to the head of running back James Starks that sent Meriweather to the sideline with a concussion of his own.

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday that Meriweather did some drills in practice on Wednesday and that he remains under evaluation for symptoms by the team’s medical staff.

Meriweather has a history of past fines for hits that the league felt crossed the line. He was fined $50,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit in 2010 and picked up $45,000 more in fines for two separate incidents in the 2011 season.

Titans safety Bernard Pollard and Texans safety Kareem Jackson have also been fined $42,000 this week. Buccaneers safety Dashon Goldson was fined $100,000 after his one-game suspension for repeated illegal hits was overturned on appeal.

  1. If any of the players that were fined deserved to get suspended, it was Meriweather. Back to back helmet to helmet hits with intent after a history of head hunting? It was pure dirty.

  2. Okay, what’s wrong with this picture? How can he have a history of of being fined for similar hits, and this one is $42,000 and his first was $50,000 in 2010.??

    NFL- this makes no sense.

  3. So is there still a chance that he’ll also be fined for the hit on Starks? Just because he was the one who bore the brunt of it shouldn’t make it any more acceptable. The guy was head-hunting that day and fortunately (unfortunately, for him) ran into the wrong head before he could do any more damage.

$42k and a concussion of his own is nice, but they should have hit him some more in his pocketbook so he’ll get the message.

  4. If a player has already been fined 3 times and continues to engage in the bad conduct, then thats a signal that they don’t get it and another fine is not the appropriate answer. The helmet to helmet hitting behavior has and will continue to cause dangerous injury. Meriweather deserved a 4 game suspension at a minimum.

  5. Odd that his fine would actually decrease from a previous incident. Unless they cut it in half since on the second hit he knocked himself out.

  6. Notice how much fines are now? I think the nfl is attempting to recoup some of that concussion lawsuit money

  7. Dashon Goldson’s hit was ugly and he has a history, but Merriweather has done this at least 3 times already this year so it’s not like it was his first offense. Why no suspension?

And for that matter, Ahmad Black’s shot at Jimmy Graham was a blatant attempt to take him out. You want to make bounty jokes? THAT was headhunting.

  8. This guy deserves a suspension. I think they let him off because he hasn’t had an infraction since 2011. They must not have taken into account that he was injured all of last season because he gets himself injured constantly playing like this.

He was also celebrating after he concussed Lacy… who had run for 10 yards and gotten a first down. Idiot.

  9. $42,000 that’s it??!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Should at least be $100,000

    2 hits x 42 = $ 84,000 + multiple time moron = $100,000 +

  10. How is the big bang clock not suspended? Remember him taking Todd Heap out a few years back with the Pats, this dude has a long history of head hunting

  11. This clown was run out of Foxboro by BB for his reckless, head-hunter play.

Hasn’t learned any other way, apparently.

  12. The Redskins need to cut this jerk and he would fit in real well with one of the most disgusting and dirty teams in the NFL – the Pittsburgh Steelers.

  13. I hope he appeals. Then maybe the NFL will review the tape and realize that Merriweather is absolutely right about the fine being inappropriate. They can rectify it by making it 84000 and adding a two game suspension. Without a suspension, you can bet Shanahan will put him right back on the field, even if he cant see straight.
