Jets linebacker Antwan Barnes may not have been impressed with what Bills defensive end Mario Williams did against the Panthers last Sunday, but the NFL doesn’t share his opinion.
Williams was named the AFC defensive player of the week on Wednesday, an honor that was easy to see coming after he racked up 4.5 sacks in the 24-23 victory over Carolina. That was a career best for Williams and the most in a single game by a Bills player in the history of the franchise.
It’s the third time that Williams has been named defensive player of the week and the first time he’s been honored since joining the Bills as the other two came during the 2007 season with Houston. He’s the first Bills defensive lineman to get the nod since Aaron Schoebel in Week 14 of the 2006 season.
Williams will get a chance to give Barnes, who downplayed Williams’ sacks because they came against the Panthers, an up-close look at his talents on Sunday when the Bills travel to New Jersey to face the Jets.
