Vikings, Packers will wear throwbacks with their standard helmets

Throwback uniforms have become one of the more fun realities of the so-called No Fun League.  The practice, which either originated or intensified with the NFL’s 75th season in 1994, also has resulted in more revenues.

The extra uniform expands the universe of jersey sales.  For some teams, it also has resulted in the use of a helmet not with different decals but with a different base color.

In recent years, teams like the Jets (blue), Patriots (white), Steelers (yellow, which has been scrapped), Cowboys (white), Redskins (brown), Eagles (lighter green and an homage to the Brazilian soccer team), Packers (brown), Falcons (red), and Bucs (white) have rolled out different helmets with their alternative uniforms.  This year, the practice abruptly came to a halt with the announcement on Tuesday that Tampa Bay has scuttled the Bucco Bruce throwbacks for the September 29 home game against the Cardinals.

Other teams (like the Patriots and Falcons) haven’t advised us of their plans.  The Cowboys have said they haven’t decided what they’ll do about their Thanksgiving tradition of swapping the silver helmet with the blue star of a white helmet with a blue star.

Two teams have informed PFT that the throwbacks will be used with their current helmets.  The Vikings will apply their now-defunct two-dimensional horn decals and gray face masks to the new purple helmets with a matte finish.  The Packers will remove the stripes and decals from their yellow helmets.

That’s good news for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has said he prefers the tan pants, for performance reasons.

It’s bad news for fans who look forward to those one or two games per year when the NFL takes a page from pretty much every college program and trots out an entirely different uniform.

UPDATE 5:41 p.m. ET:  On Tuesday, a Vikings spokesman explained to me the plan for throwbacks in light of the new rule, without expressly stating whether throwbacks were planned for 2013.  On Wednesday, a different Vikings spokesman said the team plans no throwbacks for 2013.

  1. I would like to see Nike and the NFL do “updated throwbacks”. Put a modern spin on the old looks.

In any event, I’m glad the Bucs won’t be doing the throwback jerseys. I love the Bucco Bruce helmet, but the jerseys are atrocious.

  2. Most throwbacks aren’t that great, but I do like the Broncos, Patriots, Bills, Oilers and, best of all, the Chargers powder blue uni.

  3. Throwbacks = potential additional merchandising revenue

Throwbacks + current helmet = Not fooling anyone, Just stupid

  4. Don’t teams wear one helmet for practice and a different one for games anyway?

If so, then what’s the big deal about using a different helmet for a game anyway?

The biggest factor is that whatever helmet each player wears actually fits properly.

But whatever the case, if the NFL is so concerned about helmet issues, then why do they allow any player to play with his chin strap not completely secured? Lots of them play with one snap undone.

  5. Did someone tell the NFL that just because they are wearing “Throwback” Uniforms, that the Helmets are actually up to date with todays safety standards and that are not the actual helmets from pre-1980?

  6. So the NFL makes money on selling the throwbacks but they don’t let the teams wear the FULL uniform to commemorate the wearing of the throwbacks? Does that make sense to anyone but them?

  7. When is someone REALLY going to do it right and wear a helmet with no color or logo, but rather a brown textured leather looking helmet with faux stitches on it and a brown face mask too.
    Now that look would rock.

  8. Dude, the “throwback” for the packers woulda been a leather cap like a world war 2 fighter pilot might wear. there was nothing throwback about it. This is lame, I really liked those helmets.

An awful lot of players now wear a helmet that is too big for them. When we all started playing football you had to pull the earholes out and force your helmet onto your head and the forehead pad would leave a red mark (Peyton Manning still has this if you notice). Nowadays, players just put it on without any force and with the chin strap hanging this is why there are a lot of helmets being popped off during any game. The NFL should adopt the college rule that if your helmet pops off, on its own, you need to sit out for a play. Maybe these guys will then wear a helmet that actually fits them and is potentially safer.

  10. Thetoolloftool, the redskins already have a helmet that has a leather looking finish.. They wore it last year… Been done

  11. I don’t understand this.

The size and fit of a helmet isn’t somthing that can never be replicated again. They have to be replaced all the time.

They can’t use the same exact helmet specifics if the helmet is painted a different color?

I feel like I have to be missing something.

  12. If they do the throw-back historic thing, I hope it’s at Lambeau rather than our Teflon-coated plastic creation.

  13. The league makes little money from selling helmets. If there was $ to be made then they would figure something out.

    But there isn’t.

  14. Sorry Vikes fans, but this quote from the May thread on this topic was just too good not to post again, not against you, but against your trolls:

“The throwbacks are a tribute to the Packers first world championship back in 1929. Now the Vikings are quite willing to don a throwback uniform to commemorate their first championship as soon as they get around to winning one.”

  15. Who cares what uniform the Vikes wear. All that matters is what uniform the Lynx will wear when they win another WNBA championship!

  16. It’s not like they are wearing leather helmets. And people buying those throwbacks need their heads examined.

  17. is all about helmets fitting properly? the trainers and equipment managers in a multi billion dollar industry are skilled enough to find TWO helmets that fit properly.

    this is a joke.

let’s address another issue that will NEVER be addressed by the league on the same subject. look at players like adrian clayborn, with massive dreads. there’s no way in hell that his helmet provides the same protection/fit as someone with short hair.

  19. It’s actually due to the recent $765 million settlement. Each player was fitted with their helmet, they must play with that helmet. If a team like the Bears were to play with throwbacks, they only need to take the C decal off the existing fitted helmet. However, the Bucs, helmets are pewter, old school are white, completely different helmet. Of course you would have to go to a source that actually reports news to get this type of detail in an explanation.

If you look at the picture on the post of the packer throw back uniform, the brown helmet is suppose to represent a leather helmet. Granted there are not stitches or texturing.

    ————————————————
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – if you want to count that as a “championship”, even though the vikings went on to lose the Super Bowl that year (which was the true championship game to everyone that follows professional football that isn’t a viking fan), does that mean that we can count the 2 NFL championships that the Packers won the years that they won the first two Super Bowls? Thereby bringing Green Bay’s record total number of championships to 15?

  24. So why don’t they get a company to do Vinyl wraps on the helmets, just like people do with their cars??? Those arent airbrushed paint jobs, they’re literally vinyl wrappings with printed images.

Its not like it would cost a lot of money, or even take a huge amount of time. It would facilitate switching throwback to regular quite quickly, with the exception of different facemask colors. Which of course the NFL would probably get ticked off about as well

  25. Very simple fix,They need to wear the same helmet right? Well start using full Helmet Decals to change it’s color.

  26. NFL Championship before ’66/’67 season = Super Bowl today.

NFL Championship ’68-’70 (years where the was a Super Bowl, but the conferences were still known as the NFL and AFL as opposed to NFC and AFC) is the NFC Championship today.

You were NFC Champions in 1970, not Super Bowl or “current-day” NFL Champions.

You have no true championships. Accept it and move on.

I cringe when I see how loose most players wear their helmets. You can see just how loose chin straps often are because you can see a ton of daylight between them and the player’s cheek. Sometimes it looks like you could put two fingers in that space.

That shouldn’t fly, not in the NFL or any football league.

Doesn’t matter what we wear, still going to steamroll through the NFC North.

  30. Why not just let them wear the Throwback helmet during practice in the weeks leading up to the games in which they need to wear the helmet….that way the cushions in the helmet have time to conform to the heads of the players.

  31. I like the Packers’ “throwback” pants and helmets much more than the jerseys. And I agree with Florio that it would be a lot more interesting to see them try out completely new uniforms once or twice a year. Oregon does it too much, but I’d love to see a 21st century Packer uniform occasionally.
Wearethesteelers – good luck getting six WINS this season.
Kacimlangford – the comment was “World Championship.” Vikings have never won one. And seriously, do you guys have any idea how pathetic you sound when you try to count 1969 as a “real” championship? The answer is: “VERY.”

  32. stillthebest:

    Typical Packers Fan. Can’t count.
Keeps counting all the NON SB “championships” when counting “Titletown” titles, then refuses to count the ones other teams win by saying “It wasn’t a superbowl.

Go back to first grade math….

  33. NFC North teams have been around long enough to have and wear throwback jerseys. Lots of history in the NFCN……proud to be a fan of a team in the best division in the NFL……The Black and Blue Division.

  34. “That’s good news for Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has said he prefers the tan pants…”

If he had it his way, the uniforms would also have matching feather boas and eye shade, too.

As we all know, Karen Rodgers is very *sensitive* to those types of thing.

  35. I never said they didn’t count. But NFL Championships when Super Bowls started are the equivalent of NFC Championships today. I can count just fine. If the Packers had lost both Super Bowls 1 and 2, I wouldn’t count those as “Championships”.

    Get over yourselves.

The best part is – with the Vikings, this joke’s probably going to be good to use again (and again, and again…) over the next 14/15 weeks.

  37. Fine, Vikings. Enjoy your NFL Championship in which you went to the Super Bowl and got pounded 23-7 by the Chiefs.

Fun Fact: Packers beat those Chiefs in Super Bowl 1, 35-10.

  38. The Minnesota Vikings HAVE ONE NFL CHAMPIONSHIP UNDER THEIR BELT! Get used to it for crying out loud. Either give them the credit or stop with the 13 Championship boasting.

It’s either the Packers have four SB trophies and they have none, or the Packers have thirteen championships and they have one.

    Grow up for chrissakes….

  39. “Most throwbacks aren’t that great, but I do like the Broncos, Patriots, Bills, Oilers and, best of all, the Chargers powder blue uni.”

I’d agree, but part of the charm of the throwbacks is seeing teams with who’ve been in the league seemingly forever, wear some awful unis.

Also, I would add the Cowboys unis, the one’s with the white helmet, as one of the one’s I also like.

The Bear’s ones are the worst. I’m a fan, but they’re just terrible. lol

  40. Mr. Florio, you do know the real origin of those awful light blue/yellow Eagles uniforms, right?

A tribute to Philadelphia’s Swedish settlers.

  41. Is the NFL claiming that throwbacks add to concussion risk? The rational here doesn’t seem to exist!

Throwbacks need to be throwbacks with the old helmets … old logos … old colors …

Why would we want to see throwback jerseys with current helmets?

  42. I despise the Cowboys, but they ought to pay whatever the fine will be and wear what they want to on Thanksgiving.

  43. What is a throwback? Since our throwbacks are our current uniforms, would the rule apply to us if we wanted to go with the 80’s version of the Giants’ unis with “Giants” spelled on the helmet?? Those aren’t “throwbacks”.

  45. ummm once the superbowl era began if you lost the superbowl then your not the champion. packers wouldn’t have 13 if they were in the super bowl era. wining the nfc championship doesn’t do any good if you lose the superbowl.
