Watt takes high road on Warmack’s “just another guy” comments

He may look like a pro wrestler, but Texans defensive end J.J. Watt doesn’t talk like one.

Unfortunately.

On Wednesday, reporters had a chance to ask Watt about recent comments from Titans guard Chance Warmack, who dubbed the 2012 NFL defensive player of the year “just another guy.”  Watt took the high road in response.

Unfortunately.

“I let my play do the talking,” Watt said, via quotes distributed by the team.  (Our friend at SportsRadio 610 in Houston provided the head’s up.)  “That’s fine.  I put my helmet just like everybody else.  It’s what I do once the helmet is on that matters.”

With or without his helmet, Watt still wants to get 20 sacks in 2013.

“Absolutely,” Watt said.  “A lot of people don’t think it can be done.  A lot of people don’t think it’s possible, but I love doing impossible things.  That’s my favorite.”

His new favorite likely will be getting some of those sacks by rolling Warmack like a bowling ball into Jake Locker’s legs.  But the rematch won’t happen until December 29.

Unfortunately.

    What is Warmack thinking here?

  2. chargerdillon says: Sep 18, 2013 8:50 PM

Is JJ Watt going to play in 2013?

Oh….you mean he has been, just not producing like last year.

I watched him get owned almost every play by the Chargers new rookie RT Fluker.

Other than one batdown of a pass JJ Watt was a role player and other players were the star of that defense.

Is he a one year wonder?

  3. bears0492 says: Sep 18, 2013 8:53 PM

Watt is a monster, Warmack knows it and basically admitted as much.

I still think the media blew those comments the hell up and took them out of context. He was just saying that Watt is still human like the rest of us (except AP of course) and just because the dude is an animal doesn’t mean he can’t have certain weaknesses that show up on tape.

  4. themagicman1223 says: Sep 18, 2013 8:56 PM

J.j Watt is going to abuse Warmack…

  5. kirksav says: Sep 18, 2013 8:56 PM

You know how I knew the Chargers were playing?

They blew a 21 point lead.

  6. cheddarrob says: Sep 18, 2013 8:57 PM

No one game plans for a role player.

  7. themagicman1223 says: Sep 18, 2013 8:57 PM

    Again

  8. detectivejimmymcnulty says: Sep 18, 2013 8:58 PM

Rookies think they know it all..

  9. swaggyy says: Sep 18, 2013 8:59 PM

Well he is just another guy. What’s he supposed to do? Get on his knees and bow to the guy? This is the NFL. Respect is rare

  10. puppybowler says: Sep 18, 2013 9:04 PM

Didn’t JJ Watt spit on the Pats logo at midfield and wipe his feet on it?

  11. beerbratscheese says: Sep 18, 2013 9:08 PM

Can anybody tell me how many sacks Michael Strahan had in the first two games of the year he had 22.5? The answer is zero.

Watt has two. He is still a stud and a force. He may not get 20, but he’s no one year wonder.

  12. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 18, 2013 9:09 PM

Watt disappeared against the Pats twice last year both late in the season and in the playoffs.

Doesn’t handle big game pressure very well.

  13. zamarripajoaquin says: Sep 18, 2013 9:09 PM

Respect isn’t rare but it is EARNED and JJ has earned the respect of players around the league

  14. mackcarrington says: Sep 18, 2013 9:11 PM

Watt takes the high road and the media can’t stand it.

  15. thestrategyexpert says: Sep 18, 2013 9:11 PM

Worthy talk of a worthy player. He could have made a joke about how Warmack’s team chose Jake Locker over him. I’m not on an NFL team so I’ll crack the dumb joke for him…

They chose a “Locker” to organize their useless junk, while the Texans went for firepower and got some serious “Wattage”.

It’s gametime Titans and JJ has come out to play, what are you going to do?

  16. bengalskuta82 says: Sep 18, 2013 9:14 PM

He’s not great but he is good. He versatile. He lines up anywhere so that’s a good thing about him.

  17. nananatman says: Sep 18, 2013 9:28 PM

JJ Watt discovered tangible evidence of Dark Matter! That is impossible.

Sacking another man holding a ball? Very possible.

Sorry JJ, you really are, just a man.

  18. kacimlangford says: Sep 18, 2013 9:36 PM

It seems like every year, there is a player that does amazing then the next year, not so well. Teams figure out how to stop them. Watt is no exception.

Warmack is going to be a great player. This will be a battle to watch for years to come, especially that next game after those comments. Rookie may regret it.

  20. vikescry1 says: Sep 18, 2013 9:56 PM

20 sacks impossible?? hmm thought the record was 22.5???

  21. jonbeck316 says: Sep 18, 2013 10:06 PM

It’s a good thing Watt didn’t here Warmack’s statement in its entirety. Warmack actually said, “Watt is just another guy… on HGH.”

  22. tory707 says: Sep 18, 2013 10:17 PM

Who is Warmack??? Just another idiot!!!

  23. tjgoodfella says: Sep 18, 2013 10:23 PM

    AD not AP

    (Sean Connery voice)

  25. dmaq1 says: Sep 18, 2013 10:40 PM

I’d rather have Cameron Wake on my team.. but Watt is pretty nice with the swat.

  26. dalcow4 says: Sep 18, 2013 10:47 PM

I like Watt, but let’s not go overboard…

Watch the Charger game and you’ll see Watt get handled pretty well by DJ Fluker and Jeromey Clary.

  27. beerndrums says: Sep 18, 2013 11:01 PM

    The Texans are so overrated

  28. flipola says: Sep 18, 2013 11:04 PM

Come on, there’s no hero or villain here. Warmack just meant that he’d handle/approach him as he would anyone else. He wasn’t insulting him, I’m sure he has Warmack’s respect for how he plays.

  29. rockybev35 says: Sep 18, 2013 11:19 PM

Watt swatted down a Rivers Pass, had 4 tackles and 5 QB hits. Oh… Texans held SD to 10 yards after midway thru 3rd quarter. Total role player!:). How’s that collapse feel?

  30. ragingmouse says: Sep 19, 2013 12:06 AM

Someone is about to get ” electrocuted” this weekend!

  31. randomcommenter says: Sep 19, 2013 12:13 AM

You know who’s just a guy. Pretty much every recent Bama player aside from Julio Jones.

  32. thegreatgabbert says: Sep 19, 2013 12:21 AM

Just another 6-5, 290 pounder who benches 225 pounds 34 times, has a 37″ vertical, 10′ broad jump, and can run the 3 cone in under 6.9 seconds.

  33. thegreatgabbert says: Sep 19, 2013 12:24 AM

Reporters were trying to goad Watt into a controversial response to Warmack’s smack. But J.J. said “Fat Chance!”.

  34. Dad says: Sep 19, 2013 1:05 AM

    Stupid.

  35. chargersdiehard says: Sep 19, 2013 1:21 AM

The Texans beat the Chargers but all Watt did was a bunch of nothing. Once the Texans had the lead he started flexing and acting all roided up…but thats about it. But props to the rest of their team for not getting abused by a rookie (Fluker) all night.

  36. ibreathefootball says: Sep 19, 2013 1:24 AM

Warmack is trippin. JJ Watt had 2 sacks vs. the Titans. Why didn’t all the defensive lineman for the Texans have 2 or more sacks each? Because Watt’s not an average player.

  37. kingkreg12 says: Sep 19, 2013 4:16 AM

Respect is rare…. but the guy blew to cover off the league last year. Watt is a good guy who does not run his mouth too much, I think he is one of the few who deserves respect.

Especially since he runs through about 95% of people in one on one matchups.

  38. jetsflyinghigh says: Sep 19, 2013 5:19 AM

honestly didn’t watch the game, only saw the highlights where you don’t really get a feel for how the line on either side of the ball played. how did warmack do when he was up against watt? obviously watt is a freak, but if warmack was able to hold his own it’s just a rookie feeling his oats after a good game.

  39. toonloonboon says: Sep 19, 2013 7:26 AM

    Warmack is taking a chance

  40. xetuoh says: Sep 19, 2013 7:28 AM

@chargerdillon. Whatever your bringing over the border from Tijuana, put it down and say “I don’t watch football”

JJWatt stats from Sundays game vs. Titans:

He had 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 TFL, 2 PD, and 4 QB hits, even with the Titans’ offensive line tackling him on some plays.

So, please research before you babble.

  41. ccjcsr says: Sep 19, 2013 7:32 AM

    Who cares!

    Only 1 Team in Texas….Cowboys!

  42. bdl08 says: Sep 19, 2013 7:41 AM

Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers & Tim Tebow are just guys, but 2 out of the 3 will make defenses look silly … just ask the Ravens & Redskins defense.

  43. 00reo says: Sep 19, 2013 7:45 AM

poor journalism. you know that’s out of context.

  44. faulkana says: Sep 19, 2013 7:47 AM

    Watt is a poser.
He is an above average poser.
He is on loan to the Texans, but the Patriots own him.

  45. billsfan1 says: Sep 19, 2013 11:49 AM

Didn’t JJ Watt spit on the Pats logo at midfield and wipe his feet on it?

if this were wrestling, that would clearly make him the people’s champ.

  46. mrgroovesd says: Sep 19, 2013 12:02 PM

This is where Watt should really bring it the next time the Texans play the Titans and just make sure he terrorizes Warmack and have that “Welcome to the NFL rook” moment.

  47. texansdude says: Sep 19, 2013 12:32 PM

Just another guy? Just another guy?!? I am guessing that when Warmack was growing up, he regularly let the next door neighbor walk in and slap his mother, too.

  48. georgebrett says: Sep 19, 2013 2:38 PM

J.J. Watt will be just like others, really great player until the PED’s wear off.

  49. uscoach says: Sep 19, 2013 3:44 PM

    Thanks a lot, Warmack.

    Signed,

    A Ravens Fan
