Alex Smith needs to protect himself a little better

Smith AP

With all the concern regarding the ability of Andy Reid’s former quarterback in Philly putting himself in harm’s way, red flags should be hoisted regarding a sudden reckless streak from Reid’s current quarterback in Kansas City.

Smith, who lost his starting job in San Francisco after a concussion opened the door for Colin Kaepernick, repeatedly put himself in harm’s way during the opening drive in last Sunday’s home opener against the Cowboys.

During the 13-play, 77-yard scoring march, Smith ran the ball five times.  Every time, he finished the effort with something other than a slide or a run out of bounds.  At one point, Smith capped a 17-yard run on third and 15 by launching himself butt first along the sideline.

On each of Smith’s next three runs during the game, he either went out of bounds or slid.  So maybe it was adrenaline on the opening drive, and maybe he was told to calm down and be careful.

Regardless, when we’re watching and waiting for Mike Vick to get blown up, sir on Thursday night, it makes sense to also keep an eye on whether Smith gets ear-holed.

Everyone was crying about Gabbert “ducking and dodging” when there was an uninterrupted flow of 300 pound linemen in his face every play. Now they’re saying the other QBs in the league “need to protect themselves better”. Blaine was ahead of his time because he’s smarter than the rest.

Blaine Gabbert? “Smarter than the rest”???

I’m not sure what Blaine’s IQ but his football IQ definitely needs to improve. But it’s not going to matter this Sunday in Seattle.

Yes, of course Gabbert is the epitome of intelligent QB play. I’m not sure how I missed it. I guess because I tend to think he’s the worst starting QB I’ve seen since Tebow. Actually, I’d seriously consider Tebow over him. Henne should be starting down there.

Regarding Alex, I think its good that he has some toughness, but he does need to be smarter. He does have some awkward slides at times, like the hit that he suffered the concussion on last year. Nice to see him doing well in KC though. They should be able to gash that eagles D tonight.

Don’t think Gabbert is playing in Seattle. Hurt. Seahawks dodge a bullet.

“launching himself butt first along the sideline”

    I just can’t envision that….

if launching yourself butt first is wrong, i don’t want to be right.

Don’t particularly like the red pants with the red jerseys look. Which is too bad because the Chiefs usually have some sharp uniforms

@nineroutsider – That Loping Graffiti Giraffe had a worse game statistically last week than Gabbert did week one. With much better support.

Smith needs to throw the ball a lot further.
