Eagles follow touchdown with pointless “swinging gate” fake

ChipKelly AP

The latter days of the Jim Zorn era in D.C. were marred by a failed “swinging gate” fake on a field goal try.  The early days of the Chip Kelly era in Philly possibly have been marred by a “swinging gate” fake on an extra point attempt.

After an impressive drive by the Eagles ended in a touchdown pass by Mike Vick to Jason Avant, the Eagles lined up for the extra point, shifted most of the formation wide to the left, and snapped the ball to tight end Zach Ertz, who was supposed to get through the wall of blockers.

It failed.

So it’s now 10-6 instead of 10-7, and that squandered point could end up being the difference between a win and a loss.

This Kelly guy obviously has no concern for the point spread.

They’d be pretty good in the Pac 12

wow eagles are beating themselves with bonehead mistakes… yet defense is amazing and we are still playin ball with them… Either Chiefs are horrible or we are that good and killing ourselves.

Aaannnd three turnovers in the first. We’re lucky it’s only 10-6.

Funny…those ‘squandered’ points were never the difference between a win and a loss when Chip was a Duck.

Just today I was talking about Pitt running that nonsense in a game years ago. Someone please tell me the point of that play. Seriously. I don’t get it.

Why do they call him “Shady” McCoy?

  13. titansbro says: Sep 19, 2013 9:37 PM

That’s because the Ducks always had 10 times more talent than the other team.

  14. s0merand0mguy says: Sep 19, 2013 9:37 PM

first 2 weeks of offense + this weeks defense = perfect combo…. Come on let’s work on this now!

You hope Chip will learn he can’t get away with the things at this level that he did at Oregon. Otherwise, it could be a long season. Most NFL games are decided by 3 points or less. This NCAA mentality is the reason most college coaches fail at this level.

The talent levels between NFL teams are much much closer than those in college. One or two plays/opportunities made or missed ends up deciding “most” NFL games.

Alex Smith is not good rolling out. Stay in the pocket and make some throws. But Kelly’s swinging gate was cute.

Id love to “swing” at Jim Zorn

  20. hummer53 says: Sep 19, 2013 10:08 PM

he did that at Oregon too. Almost always on the first TD. Oregon has done it a couple times this year.

  21. mitchem85 says: Sep 19, 2013 10:09 PM

Had the skins not dug themselves such a deep hole in the first half the eagles would be looking at going 0-3.. Eagles won’t win more than 6 games this year.

    You heard it here first

  22. jvw1982 says: Sep 19, 2013 10:09 PM

WoW Andy Reid sucks, how can you have two returns to mid field and get 4 turnovers and only have 16 points? Just awfull play calling, someone tell him his QB is mediocre at best and his running back is the strength of the offense….thank God for the Defense, they won’t stay unbeaten for long…….why no timeout after the vic sack on 3rd down? Just awful, just be glad Philly fans you have a new coach……

  23. thefiesty1 says: Sep 19, 2013 10:22 PM

I haven’t seen a swinging gate (work) since junior high school. Maybe Chip should go back to Oregon.

  24. Steve B says: Sep 19, 2013 10:23 PM

This isn’ the PAC-12. Wait until the 4th to go for 2.

Charley College is an awful NFL Coach

  26. marvsleezy says: Sep 19, 2013 10:25 PM

How dare he try something different in the no fun league!! They can never get that 1 point back now!!! Fire him!

  27. jjackwagon says: Sep 19, 2013 10:27 PM

That early, the two point play was senseless. I hope it costs him the game.

  28. patssox says: Sep 19, 2013 10:32 PM

I like some of what I see Chip Kelly doing, but this swinging gate silliness is embarrassing!

  29. greg2geez says: Sep 19, 2013 10:38 PM

If you thought Chip Kelly was not going to bring the swinging gate with him to the NFL you have not been paying attention.

  30. musicman495 says: Sep 19, 2013 10:50 PM

Gee, wasn’t it two weeks ago that the NFL would never be the same because of Chip Kelly’s offense? That was quick.

  31. jacksonjames4 says: Sep 19, 2013 11:04 PM

You media people are something else. If it works, you all are singing a different tune on how Chip can’t be stopped.

  32. newcomer2013 says: Sep 19, 2013 11:04 PM

Chip kelley and the Eagles are pathetic. Be a good game with the Jags.

  33. udub says: Sep 19, 2013 11:56 PM

Wouldn’t you know…turned out it wasn’t the difference between winning and losing.

  34. granadafan says: Sep 20, 2013 12:21 AM

Yer not in Eugene anymore, Chip!

  35. BED MAN OKC says: Sep 20, 2013 1:58 AM

Seriously, the DUMBEST move ive seen a Head Coach in the NFL make, since I do not know when.

Right before the Chiefs put the game away with the Field goal and put themselves up by 10, all I could think to myself is – Filthadeplhia COULD have been down by 6 with an extra point to win, if that bonehead egomaniacal, sanctions avoiding “offensive genius” had put his ego aside & know it all attitude.

Can ANYONE here tell me why there was even a .01% chance that an NFL coach would try that EVER. Let alone when losing at the time?

I literally could see ZERO benefit, no future benefit, nothing….

  36. tackledummy1505 says: Sep 20, 2013 3:29 AM

And it wasn’t so I guess no harm no foul lol

  37. zn0rseman says: Sep 20, 2013 10:36 AM

Funny how all those gadget plays and spread offense tactics don’t work when the other teams have talent levels remotely close to your own.

The NFL has a draft Chip. That means you can’t just send a new car and an envelope of cash to the most talented players and magically expect to have a roster better than everyone elses.

  38. grruffgrruff says: Sep 20, 2013 10:52 AM

    Mute point now.
All these comments would have been totally different
    if it had worked.

  39. nyjetsfan08 says: Sep 21, 2013 2:31 AM

this is something you try in madden, not an nfl game when the score is 10-6!!
