Louis Delmas fined for wearing wrong socks

Detroit Lions v Arizona Cardinals Getty Images

Among the many important issues the NFL monitors each Sunday is whether players are wearing the correct color socks.

Unfortunately for Lions safety Louis Delmas, he wasn’t.

The NFL has confirmed that Delmas was fined $5,250 for a uniform violation. Delmas was wearing black and blue socks, while the NFL requires Lions players to wear either white and blue or solid blue.

Delmas said the money was taken out of his paycheck and that in the NFL, if you’re fined for a sock violation you find out, “when you get the damn check.”

Delmas said no one told him there was anything wrong with his sock choice before or during the game. He knows now.

How petty the NFL is. Next they’ll say your underwear is the wrong color.

  6. mrbigass says: Sep 20, 2013 9:16 PM

These fines are just getting absurd. The NFLPA should raise hell but we all know they’ll cower at the thought of crossing Goodell…..

  7. swaggyy says: Sep 20, 2013 9:17 PM

Oh, this isn’t about RG3..? Then…stupid no fun league, let the players play.

  10. bennyb82 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:23 PM

Cannot wait for the NFL to fine a guy for wearing the wrong color underwear…

  11. lazzzz says: Sep 20, 2013 9:25 PM

I knew when I saw him during the game he was going to get fined! All you Lions haters out there can blame that on the lack of discipline in the organization!!

  12. nananatman says: Sep 20, 2013 9:30 PM

What’s the fine for a slight Hershey swirl in the buttock region and how many fingers do they use to check?

  13. foosballisthedevil says: Sep 20, 2013 9:34 PM

Right up there with Suh, Harrison, and Aldon Smith. Delmas, you should be ashamed of yourself you scofflaw.

  14. iceshocker says: Sep 20, 2013 9:34 PM

what exactly was going on in that picture

  15. eaglesfan036 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:38 PM

I’m glad the NFL did this his different colored socks were ruining the integrity of the game!

  16. tfrancisco77 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:39 PM

So, a sock violation is 5k. A blow to the head is 15k. And none of this factors in the money the guy makes. Sounds like the NFL needs to rethink their strategy on fines.

  17. tigersfandan says: Sep 20, 2013 9:40 PM

Remember when Roger Goodell said that if one person was offended by the Redskins’ name, the NFL had to listen? Well, let’s pretend I’m offended by the outrageous fines the NFL hands out. Start listening, Goodell.

  18. blackngold4life says: Sep 20, 2013 9:41 PM

    REDICULOUS!

  19. 4thqtrsaint says: Sep 20, 2013 9:42 PM

The league just looks for ways to take money from players.

  20. shadowcell says: Sep 20, 2013 9:42 PM

Thank you, Roger Goodell, for protecting America from the menace of a highly-paid football player not wearing the right color socks.

  21. jdubb84 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:56 PM

Marshawn lynch got the same punishment

  22. thehuckster404 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:57 PM

was he running late and got dressed at home and went straight into the stadium? How the hell could he not look around in the locker room and realize everyone’s socks were different than his?

  23. steelers4385 says: Sep 20, 2013 9:57 PM

What a love hate relashionship with nfl. Love watching but stuff like this makes me sick. I wish someone would just jack up goodell or someone on the board. Wouldnt fix nuttn but sure would make me feel better

    No Fun League strikes again.

  25. tinbender2000 says: Sep 20, 2013 10:13 PM

They give you socks to wear. It’s part of your uniform. You choose to wear your own socks instead and get fined. What part of this do you not understand?

  26. realphinsfan says: Sep 20, 2013 10:16 PM

    Needless Fine League

  27. thehatefulnerd says: Sep 20, 2013 10:18 PM

    Stupid. Arbitrary, gratuitous.

    Goodell’s legacy in microcosm.

  28. firstroyal says: Sep 20, 2013 10:21 PM

Another surprise for me, I know the NFL has strict uniform policies and I don’t even play the game. As soon as I started dressing, I would wonder why I was the only one that looked like I do.

I am more inclined to believe he wanted his own “look” and thought he would get away with it instead of believing he has no clue about NFL uniform violations.

  29. f0rem4n says: Sep 20, 2013 10:22 PM

The Lions again show they are a dirty team with no respect for the NF Roger Goodell.

  30. rahavort says: Sep 20, 2013 10:22 PM

This is getting completely ridiculous. And I shouldn’t say “getting” because it already was ridiculous, now it is worse.

  31. 7096lions says: Sep 20, 2013 10:27 PM

As long as #26 is healthy enough to roam the secondary all year – let him wear whatever he wants – WHOGAS!

  32. 15starr says: Sep 20, 2013 10:30 PM

Wow that’s a lot of money for socks

  33. drewzducks says: Sep 20, 2013 10:33 PM

Jim Harbaugh would like an explanation.

  34. mattjay0101 says: Sep 20, 2013 10:38 PM

What they really ought to fine him for is the habitual impersonation of an NFL caliber Safety!

  35. jimmysee says: Sep 20, 2013 10:41 PM

    Big Brother is watching.

  36. padraighansen says: Sep 20, 2013 10:46 PM

So, let’s get this straight: Brandon Meriweather blatantly launches his helmet into Eddie Lacy and get’s a $40k fine, but no suspension, in one of the most glaring examples of what the NFL pays lip service to supposedly wanting to eliminate…

….but then lay a $5k fine on a dude for wearing the wrong color socks?

    Wow. Hypocritical priorities.

  37. @Cereal_22 says: Sep 20, 2013 10:55 PM

Yet they don’t test for HGH

  38. canetic says: Sep 20, 2013 10:55 PM

DUI at twice the legal limit at 7 am with some pot on the side? No problem. Wear the wrong color socks? Feel the wrath of the NFL!

  39. jibberator says: Sep 20, 2013 10:59 PM

Wow. He gets fined just as much as the guys who threw punches at eachother. LOL

  40. aljack88 says: Sep 20, 2013 11:13 PM

I was watching that game and I knew there was something wrong, something wasn’t right…. yea, sure.

I’m glad the NFL is keeping an eye on how their players appear on the field, too bad they don’t step up when their players are out of control off the field.

  41. FinFan68 says: Sep 20, 2013 11:16 PM

He acts like he didn’t know. Don’t equip managers set up unis? He had to go out of his way to deviate and how could he not notice he was not dressed the same as the 50 other guys

  42. 2ndaryinsanity says: Sep 20, 2013 11:27 PM

“Delmas said no one told him there was anything wrong with his sock choice before or durning the game.” Yeah, because a grown man isn’t capable of knowing what uniform to wear. I suppose the multitude of uniform combinations could be confusing, but ultimately he is responsible for dressing himself in the correct clothing for his job. Quit whining, man…it’s embarrassing.

  43. mmmulligan says: Sep 20, 2013 11:27 PM

Easily the worst thing a Lions player has done thus far.

  44. pdxninerfan says: Sep 20, 2013 11:30 PM

I’ll gladly offer my services to an NFL team for $4,000 a week to check their socks. For $5,000, I’ll even hire some lackey to wash them. $60,000/yr for a weekend job. Could do road games via FaceTime.

  45. waitstop says: Sep 20, 2013 11:49 PM

I’m buying my first home next week, it’s a stressful thing to put together a 20% down payment on it. It will change the future of my life and my children’s lives if I can scrape together $10,000 to make that happen. This guy just got his paycheck nominally reduced for a week of work.

  46. SparkyGump says: Sep 20, 2013 11:52 PM

Why does the NFL fine someone for incorrect socks but nobody tucks their shirt in anymore? Des Bryant STARTS every game like that. The hypocrisy of the NFL never ends.

  47. silencethecritics says: Sep 21, 2013 12:00 AM

$5000 fine for wearing the wrong colored $2 item? Sounds fair.

  48. noeffinway says: Sep 21, 2013 12:24 AM

Wow!! Now Delmas Iis dirty too! No discipline.Throw him out of the league!

  49. bigbuc419 says: Sep 21, 2013 12:32 AM

That fine just paid sock patrol’s paycheck for the season…The rest of the season’s sock patrol fines will be pure profit for the nfl

  50. sharkt says: Sep 21, 2013 1:18 AM

Maybe if Louis suited up for games more often, he’d know better.

  51. ball20hawk says: Sep 21, 2013 1:35 AM

How about the fact that everyone else on your team was wearing different colored socks?

    Here’s your sign.

  52. whodeyinpa says: Sep 21, 2013 1:41 AM

The fact that the NFL has something as rediculous as a “Sock violation” is just horrible. Especially since the Lions do have a black alternate uniform if I’m not mistaken. Plus, WHO CARES?

  53. ivanpavlov0000 says: Sep 21, 2013 1:43 AM

Yet another example of how the Lions are completely out of control. This lack of discipline starts at the top. How the NFL tolerates this crew perpetual rule violators is beyond me.

If they ever catch Suh wearing the wrong socks, I hope they fine him $100,000.

  54. byreinier says: Sep 21, 2013 2:45 AM

Taking a swing at an opponent, 7,875$
Wearing the wrong color socks, 5,250$

Fashion Police is comin’ for ya

  55. tyrobjenkins says: Sep 21, 2013 2:53 AM

Thank God those socks didn’t cause a concussion!

  56. denverwhodat says: Sep 21, 2013 3:36 AM

The absurdity of Roger God-dell strikes again. Classy, draconian tactic to withdraw from his paycheck without even a courtesy email. God-dell gets paid $20mm a year to regulate rules and wardrobes…..the joke is sadly on the NFLPA

  57. jetsjetsjetsnow says: Sep 21, 2013 4:15 AM

I can see maybe $500 or 1k, but 5k for socks??? The ratio of that to other types of illegal hitting fines being levied is very screwy!

  58. kingpel says: Sep 21, 2013 5:38 AM

So $21,000 for Ahmad Black going to Jimmy Graham’s head, $5,250 for the wrong socks.

    There is something wrong here.

  59. charger383 says: Sep 21, 2013 5:55 AM

these fines are way out of control

  60. 1historian says: Sep 21, 2013 7:26 AM

Film shows a guy diving at another guy’s knee, intent to harm

    no prob

a guy wears the WRONG COLOR SOCKS during a game

    fine him $5,250

Welcome to today’s nfl (no caps)

  61. fievel03 says: Sep 21, 2013 7:31 AM

I hate to say it, but these players KNOW this league is crazy about fashion violations, and they’ve known it for years. They chose to work here. Wear the proper uniform.

That being said….. the fines are proportionately out of control (fashion violation -vs- going after someone’s head, etc.). It needs to be fair and, more importantly, consistent.

  62. thetruthcampaign says: Sep 21, 2013 7:55 AM

This is a total lack of discipline! Schwartz probably wore the wrong socks too. The Lions will never be dis… Blah blah. JK.

  63. lionsdraftguy says: Sep 21, 2013 8:02 AM

Maybe Delmas should worry more about making plays for once than worrying about looks. And im no troll, im probably the biggest Lions fan there is.

  64. peytonsneck18 says: Sep 21, 2013 8:06 AM

do the nfl donate these fine money to a good charity? they should!!!

  65. thegonz13 says: Sep 21, 2013 8:06 AM

I know the feeling. I just got a $10,000 fine from the league for wearing Adidas sneakers while watching last Sunday’s games!

  66. shoeflypie says: Sep 21, 2013 9:06 AM

Next time, just say your name is Aldon Smith.

  67. concord148 says: Sep 21, 2013 9:19 AM

Sock it to him, damn that was funny.

  68. grruffgrruff says: Sep 21, 2013 9:23 AM

    Wait a minute!
You get fined for black. It has to be white.
    I see a discrimination suit…

  69. patriots123456 says: Sep 21, 2013 9:37 AM

    It’s a bird?

    It’s a plane?

No, it’s the “Sock Police”, coming to a stadium near you!

  70. thejuddstir says: Sep 21, 2013 9:42 AM

How is it the NFL can tell what color socks a player has on but they can’t see an illegal block or a dirty tactic my Suhsie?

  71. larrydavid7000 says: Sep 21, 2013 10:12 AM

A few questions here isn’t it the equipment managers job to see everyone has the same uniforms on. Second those fines where or what do those fines go to.

  72. warpd says: Sep 21, 2013 10:13 AM

Why would a team have illegal socks in the locker room?

  73. jlinatl says: Sep 21, 2013 10:19 AM

Every player knows what the fine is. The equipment manager lays out the uniform. It’s not like Delmas’s mom gave him the wrong socks on a Saturday morning before PopWarner.

The policy isn’t there so one mediocre safety can’t change the uniform, it’s there so there aren’t 11 different versions on the field for each team. And uniform fines pre-date Goodell.

For the amount of money an NFL player is paid, its not that difficult a policy to follow.

  74. afcdomination says: Sep 21, 2013 10:31 AM

he made the choice to be fined here. KC’s Dwayne bowe and Brandon carr did this on a MNF game a few years ago. they were fined. it was worth it

  75. dartwick says: Sep 21, 2013 10:41 AM

Where do these players go to get the wrong color socks?

Its not like they go shopping at wal-mart and and pick up new uniform socks from a big shelf of different color options.

  76. patriots123456 says: Sep 21, 2013 10:48 AM

If you’re putting on a black pair of socks, the people on both sides of you are you putting on white socks and you don’t notice it???

If you’re that dumb, how are you going to pick up a blitz or and audible?

  77. petedutcherjr says: Sep 21, 2013 11:07 AM

If the uniforms are laid out, does that mean the equipment manager messed up?

Either way, a first offense should just be a warning for something like this but I guess the nfl needs to get tv revenue back somehow!

  78. sikoix says: Sep 21, 2013 12:06 PM

Cris Carter was getting fined for not pulling his socks up 20 years ago. Fines for uniform violations are nothing new to anyone who has been paying attention.
