Report: Buccaneers release Peyton Hillis

The Buccaneers have pared a familiar name from their depth chart at running back.

The club has released Peyton Hills, Jenna Laine of reported on Saturday.

Hillis, 27, did not play in the Buccaneers’ first two regular-season games.

Hillis’ best season came in 2010, when he gained a combined 1,654 rushing-receiving yards and scored 13 touchdowns for Cleveland. However, his production slipped the next season, and he moved on to Kansas City for the 2012 campaign. Hillis rushed for 309 yards and a TD in 13 games (two starts) in his lone season with the Chiefs. The Buccaneers signed him in July.

Hillis’ departure leaves Brian Leonard and Mike James as the backups to Buccaneers featured back Doug Martin.

Demps must have made the team.

This dude was on the cover of Madden 2012.

  3. txeer304 says: Sep 21, 2013 12:59 PM

His departure means the Bucs are happy with what they see from Demps. And since Demps can offer more on special teams and offense Hillis was expendable.

Minny may want to pick this guy up. Anything is better than 2.7 yards per carry.

The Madden Cover Curse is apparently made worse when you are voted onto it by a campaign of high-fivin’ white guys. Who knew?

  6. brums21 says: Sep 21, 2013 1:03 PM

Maybe the Browns will sign him.

  7. tsuscrumhalf says: Sep 21, 2013 1:03 PM

One good season & then thought he could coast…. Life doesn’t work that way. (Except in Major League Baseball & the NBA)

  8. joekuze says: Sep 21, 2013 1:05 PM

He can always join the CIA.

  9. aswaim3 says: Sep 21, 2013 1:06 PM

I would always take a chance on Hillis. Too much talent not to. Even if it meant he played fullback in a more conventional offense. He’d be probably the most explosive FB/backup running back not named Marcel Reece.

Reminds me of a Mike Alstott clone. I hope he can figure it out

It would be funny if the Browns signed him to a minimum contract after trying to get such a huge payday from them before.

  14. itsmammoth says: Sep 21, 2013 1:24 PM

    Cowboys could use a bruiser.

Unless you’re a high caliber elite running back your shelf life in the NFL is very short.

Tom Brady wants to know if he can catch the ball.

  17. nagidac says: Sep 21, 2013 1:52 PM

Has anyone fallen farther faster than Hillis, maybe with the exception of Haynesworth? At least Haynesworth had enough sense to sign a huge contract before starting to mail it in.

bet ya he wishes he played through that case of strep throat

  19. tennesseeoilers says: Sep 21, 2013 2:14 PM

Is it just me, or is Peyton Hillis the Vince Young of running backs?

  20. warhammer420 says: Sep 21, 2013 2:19 PM

He had one good year and then his ego ruined everything.

  21. sgtr0c says: Sep 21, 2013 2:27 PM

Kinda odd that Chip Kelly going for two is a top story, and this one, of a top draft pick getting cut is not

  22. SJ says: Sep 21, 2013 2:34 PM

    The Merriman of running backs.

  23. afcdomination says: Sep 21, 2013 2:35 PM

such a bum. just watch some of his tape on the browns. he had a lot of talent. such a huge waste.

  24. afcdomination says: Sep 21, 2013 2:37 PM

KC brought hillis in, he looked like a beast in his first preseason game.

finally they get to do what they want to. they have the ball on the 1, and can pound it to hillis for a TD. the perfect combo with Charles

hillis takes the carry, and fumbles the ball on the 1/2 yard line. dude sucks.

  25. stabbymike says: Sep 21, 2013 2:38 PM

hillis’ of field problems ruined his career, had it not been for that he’d still be in cleveland. his sudden elite status went straight to his head. feel bad for him, was f***ed in denver then did the same thing to himself in cleveland

  26. mainbucsfan says: Sep 21, 2013 2:43 PM

CIA, that’s just Weird, but anyway perfect timing for the Browns

Peyton Hillis was a top draft pick??? News to me.

  28. fdugrad says: Sep 21, 2013 2:58 PM

PH, essentially a one and done. Hope he has an actual college diploma and some sort of a marketable job skill in the real world. At twenty-seven, he has fifty or sixty years ahead of him.

  29. realfootballfan says: Sep 21, 2013 3:28 PM

Probably the end of the road and highlights how short an RB’s career usually is once the tread on the tire is off.

    Back to the Cleveland Brown-stains.

More productive than Trent Richardson at Cleveland.

  38. blueagle78 says: Sep 22, 2013 12:35 AM

He’s DONE…and a con who suckered the Chiefs out of 3m last year and was about to this year with the Bucs before they caught onto him. Good riddance!

Bring him to the Raiders and Pair him up with McFadden like at Arkansas! Was that a back field with Jones in Dallas
