The Cowboys got defensive end Anthony Spencer back for last week’s game against the Chiefs, but his knee doesn’t seem to have held up well enough to make playing a regular occurrence.
Spencer is inactive for the Cowboys on Sunday, leaving them down a man on the defensive line against the Rams. George Selvie, who started with Spencer out in Week One and split time with Spencer last week, should see the lion’s share of the time at the position with Spencer out of the lineup.
With Spencer now bouncing back to the inactive list, there has to be some concern in Dallas that his knee is going to be an issue well into the season at the very least. Selvie has held up well in his absence, but the team didn’t give Spencer the franchise tag for the second straight season so that he could be a rotation player up front for them.
Dallas doesn’t have a bye until November, so there’s not much use in shutting Spencer down until that point. That likely means a lot of game-time decisions for a player the Cowboys were counting on to play a major role up front this season.
