Bengals win wild one over the Packers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is stopped short of the goal line by Cincinnati Bengals' Reggie Nelson and Leon Hall during the first half of play in their NFL football game at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati Reuters

The Bengals scored 14 points in the first nine-plus minutes of the game and they scored 20 over the final 18-plus minutes, which turned out to be enough to make up for allowing the Packers to score 30 points in between the two binges.

Cincinnati came back for a 34-30 win on a wild day at Paul Brown Stadium that could have lasting ramifications for the Packers. The deciding score came on a fumble by rookie running back Johnathan Franklin as the Packers were trying to run clock on their way to a score that would ice the game. The ball was jarred loose by defensive end Michael Johnson and recovered briefly by safety Reggie Nelson and permanently by cornerback Terence Newman on his way to a touchdown. The Packers turned the ball over on downs on the next drive, ending a miserable day for Aaron Rodgers.

Rodgers was intercepted twice in a game for the first time since 2010 and the second pick led to the touchdown that brought the Bengals within one score in the fourth quarter. Rodgers was 26-of-43 for 244 yards and a touchdown while getting sacked four times and harassed often by the Bengals defense. He didn’t have Jermichael Finley available after a concussion and Franklin was playing because James Starks became the latest backfield casualty in Green Bay this season.

For much of the second half, that was a good thing. Franklin ran for 103 yards and a touchdown while catching three passes for 23 yards, numbers that look awfully good when added to what Starks did in the first half but Franklin alone isn’t going to be able to carry the backfield load all by himself. Finley and Starks were joined on the sideline by linebacker Clay Matthews, who left with a hamstring injury in the second half.

His departure coincided with the Bengals’ return to life offensively. The Bengals had done nothing for almost two full quarters after two early scores, but found themselves on a pair of drives that ended with Andy Dalton touchdown passes. The Packers helped out with a personal foul on each drive, but Dalton was able to rebound from early problems to get his team back in position to steal the lead.

Thanks to the defense, they did and then made it stand up by knocking down Rodgers’ final two passes of the game at the line of scrimmage. It was a fitting end to a day that started and ended with one of the league’s best quarterbacks look as bad as he’s looked in years.

It’s so cute when Rodgers tries to lead a 4th quarter comeback.

  6. sellout1983 says: Sep 22, 2013 4:41 PM

That was the craziest Bengals game I have ever seen. If you would’ve told me before the game that a Marvin challenge and Terrance Newman would have the plays of the game I never would’ve believed it. Who Dey!

  7. joestemme says: Sep 22, 2013 4:41 PM

Is Aaron Rodgers really ‘the best QB in the league” as so often stated?

Wanna know what his record is now in 4th Quarter comeback opportunities against teams with a Winning Record?

    0 for 20.

That’s right – Zero wins in Twenty opportunites. Football is a team game, but this is pretty damning for a guy so universally acclaimed.

I’ll still take Brady, Peyton and Brees in the clutch.

  8. tokyosandblaster says: Sep 22, 2013 4:41 PM

Ah well.  The Packers need to get rid of Jeremy Ross.  He handed the Bengals the TD, and he gave the Packers terrible position in the Niners game.

The Packers will still win the division (and easily).  Get healthy, and come out of the bye week strong.

  9. jhein23 says: Sep 22, 2013 4:42 PM

Who would ever think a week 4 bye week would come at the perfect time? Matthews, Burnett, Hayward, Lacy, Starks all must get healthy.

The only bad thing is Rodgers usually plays awesome after a terrible game like this now he has to wait 2 weeks.

  10. mj323 says: Sep 22, 2013 4:42 PM

Between the bad defense and worse offensive line, and even worse medical training staff, this is looking like a bad season for the Packers. Hope they can turn it around, but if the first three weeks are any indication it’s going to be pretty bad. At least we’re still ahead of the Vikings though!

  11. bishopbengals says: Sep 22, 2013 4:42 PM

Woah, nflcinbengals. Our defense is legit for sure and the offense can be, but they need to make a change. I’ve been calling for Jay for a long time, he needs to be fired. I’d rather give up on a very mediocre play caller first than a quarterback.

Overall great game despite all of the mistakes on offense. Definitely one of the best so far this year. Good game Packers.

  12. jakec4 says: Sep 22, 2013 4:43 PM

  14. mavajo says: Sep 22, 2013 4:47 PM

For years, I’ve said that Rodgers’ lack of 4th Q comeback wins was a simple statistical anomaly. But I think we’re beyond that now. Rodgers can’t get it done with the game on the line. In both their losses this year, Rodgers had the ball in his hand with a chance to win, and he choked.

Also, the Packers clearly have a voodoo curse on their team – never seen a team experience so many injuries year after year. Capers needs to go – he brings nothing to the table. McCarthy is terrible play-caller in crucial situations.

Lastly, the Packers won the turnover margin (+2), won the penalty battle and won the time of possession battle. But they lost the game. Stunning.

Oh, one more thing. Packers Offense: 5.0 yards per pass v. 6.1 yards per rush. That’s right – rookie Jonathan Franklin in his first action in the NFL averaged more yards per carry on the ground than Aaron Rodgers the former MVP and “best” quarterback in the NFL averaged through the air. Best quarterback and receiving corps in the NFL, huh? Genius vertical passing play-caller as a coach, huh?

    Whatever.

  19. deltaoracle says: Sep 22, 2013 4:49 PM

Well it was an exciting game anyway.
I have to admit that when they’re missing their best LB, starting TE, 2 of their top five DBs and are down to their 4th RB, the Packers are vulnerable.
And Rodgers didn’t play very well, which is on him and MM.
    Sorry to be bitter.
In any case, congrats to Cincinnati.

  20. f1restarter says: Sep 22, 2013 4:50 PM

Mistakes, turnovers, dumb personal foul penalties. All in all, a very frustrating Lion-like loss for the Packers. The Bengals weren’t much better, but they turned all the Packer mistakes into touchdowns. The Packers’ inability to take advantage of mistakes was the difference in this game.

But at least they didn’t lose to the Browns…at home…

Great D today by the Bengals (i Know they gave up 30 but if you watched the game you know exactly what I mean). GB has a bad O-line, limited playmakers at WR and a D that is bottom half of the NFL. The Bengals have gone 18straight without allowing a 300 yd passer (including Ben twice , Peyton and Eli Manning , and now A. Rodgers). If the Bengals can eliminate all of the idiotic mistakes and turnovers they will be SCARY good!

Not to mention their next 5 games are Detriot, Baltimore, Cleveland, Minnesota and Chicago-should be 5 wins, 4 at the worst.

  30. sirtalonhawk says: Sep 22, 2013 4:58 PM

HUGE win for the Bengals. That was the best defense I have seen a team play against Rodgers except for maybe Chicago. For anyone who watched the game, the Bengals absolutely shut down the Packer offense in the 1st half. 4 Straight turnovers (all in the red zone) and the Packers could only manage field goals.

Also stopped them going on 4the down. As stated by Bengal fans and by many analysts, this team will go as far as Dalton can take them b/c this is a tremendously talented Bengal team. Only the qb can hold us back. For the Packers, very impressed by Rodgers by that his receivers were covered well all game but his ability to fit the ball in the smallest of windows is uncanny. Some of the throws he completed was ridiculous. Just imagine if the Bengals had an elite QB to go with all the talent offensively & defensively. WHODEY!!!!!

Not sure which game you were watching but it most certainly wasn’t the Packers-Bengals game. The Bengals did not ‘own’ the Packers the entire game. Last time I checked the Packers forced four turnovers on four consecutive drives and put up 30 unanswered points as a result. And this was when there were down 14-0 at one point. Sure they let them back in later but to say Cincy owned them is not even close to being true.

  45. emoney826 says: Sep 22, 2013 5:08 PM

    @Smarterthanyou,
You obviously didn’t watch the whole game. The packers handed them their second touchdown from Ross’s stupid kickoff return. The packers were up 30-14 in the second half. How is that being owned the entire game? You’re a freaking idiot. Hating the packers is fine, but to sound so stupid and ignorant, shows your lack of knowledge. And people think packer fans sound like trolls? People like you shouldn’t be allowed to speak.

    @thepvyharvin,
How do you think a QB will change things for your team? Your defense couldn’t stop a Browns team who just waved the white flag this week by giving away their only offensive playmaker. They made the vikings look terrible today. Even I thought the vikings would destroy them, but was I wrong ever! At least the packers lost to a legit super bowl contender on their field. The vikings will continue to be owned by the packers. Where was that elite receiver you spent all of that money on?

The packers are just fine. Their only problem is that they seem to always get injuries. But they have so much depth it doesn’t even show. They have lost three running backs to injuries and they just replace them easy.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, the Vikings just lost a team that is trying to tank its season. As a Vikings fan, all I can say is…clowney.

Twenty games is a pretty good sample. And, even against bad teams, Rodgers was 5 for 22 in 4th Quarter comebacks. Rodgers and the Packers are a classic Front-Running team that looks awesome when things are going well, but, not so much when things get tough.

The Bengals have been doing the “Who Dey” chant since 1981, the first year they went to the Super Bowl. I t may be lame but they most certainly didn’t rip it off the Saints. It’s the other way around.

Exactly. Saints didn’t start chanting it until 1983.

On a side note, I went to the Bengals game at Lambeau a few years ago and even though we won, the fans were as respectful and welcoming as I have ever seen at an visitors stadium. Lots of respect for the fans and the team. Good people.

Its also worth noting that the Vikings fans were also very nice when i went to see the Bengals play in a loss vs Favre. You guys probably wouldn’t hate each other so much if you weren’t in the same division lol.

I suggest you all get your digs in now before the Packers sweep the division and take the crown. It is rare that GB haters get this chance, so take it before it is gone.

We hear that every year and the Packers end up winning a lot of games and making the playoffs more often than not.

My favorite lines from stupid football fans:

    The Packers are done!
    The Packers are over rated!
Rodgers sucks / is over rated!
The Bears/Vikings/Lions are going to win it all this year!

The very least you people can do is be realistic. The Packers are good. They win games and Rodgers is a key in those wins. Fans think one way, teams think a different way. Ask teams players what they think when the Packers come up on the schedule. I bet the other 31 teams would rather not play Green Bay at home or away. Maybe the rest of the NFL should read these comments by the ignorant fans on this site? LOL. The Packers will be alright.

  93. muskyhunter2542 says: Sep 22, 2013 6:56 PM

Success breeds hatred… So many haters out there hating on the Packers because they’ve been successful over the last 21 years. I would worry about your own teams and not the Packers. The Packers will be just fine. Like it or not the Packers are a contender and are a better team than the bangles. They lost today’s game strictly due to an injured players not playing. And of course bonehead play calling which will get fixed. Go ahead and hate on, because the Packers will be there in the end and the bangles most likely will not.

  94. mikezakmn says: Sep 22, 2013 6:59 PM

  97. mp4pack says: Sep 22, 2013 7:11 PM

Packers have lost two tough games on the road against SB contenders, and are once again stockpiling injuries, which has become the rule in recent years rather than the exception. It comes down to whether or not they can get healthy, which would be a welcome change. They are still a top 3 team in the NFC and if they can get hot at the right time like they did a couple of years ago, anything can happen. All this writing off of the Packers is nothing but wishful thinking.

  98. beedubyatoo says: Sep 22, 2013 7:14 PM

But didn’t the pack put up 30 straight points…how can you say the game wasn’t as close as the score indicates?

    —————————————————

7 of those points coming on a drive kept alive by a bogus roughing the passer penalty (Funny how Packer fans keep quiet when they benefit from such calls but are such victims when one goes against them) plus all the points off Bengals’ turnovers helped contribute to the 30 points.

Packers’ O-line looked pretty good run blocking, Nelson made several more sick catches and Franklin (minus the fumble) looked very good. Way too many ugly plays though to win against a good team.

Went in shorthanded and lost key offensive and defensive players; Rodgers was uncharacteristically out of sync and they still were there at the end with a chance to win. If I were a Lions/Bears/Vikings fan, I’d be taking the opportunity to celebrate the Packers loss too I guess, but I still wouldnt bet against the Pack winning the division and improving on both sides of the ball as the season progresses. Its fun being a Packer fan.

The Bengals have a good defense and I knew that coming into the game. It was just a crazy up and down game for both teams. It’s only 1-2 and there are 13 games left this year and the byes coming so the injured players can have time to rest up. The running game is finally showing for once in a long time and it was just a tough rookie situation to fumble the ball late in the game like that after a very impressive game to that point. Keep your heads up Packers fans. It’s not all bad. Good game Bengals as well and I hope u guys win your division this year

First of all I complimented the Packers O-line, Franklin & Jordy Nelson; while insulting the team I root for (“The Vikings made themselves look terrible quite sufficiently on their own!”). So what is you issue?

Are you upset how I factually pointed out that 7 points were a result of a bogus call in the Packers’ favor and 16 were the result of turnovers? Where you annoyed how I factually pointed out that Green Bay fans complain about bad calls even when they also gain advantage from the bad calls in their favor. Or was it because I had the nerve to factually point out Rodgers & Shields complaining and looking for the flag on legitimate plays that went against them?

Perhaps my comments just weren’t as snarky, tasteless and meant for provocation as yours. Please, with all of your football acumen Tokyo-puba, enlighten me.

Who Dey comes from the first superbowl appearance in the early ’90s so I believe it pre-dates any similar chant in the NFL.

And it is derived from a local beer that I believe is now extinct. Hudepohl, locally known as Hudey.

I still have the memorial cans of Hudey from both superbowls. Put them up like a shrine when Bengals get into playoffs. Hopefully they’ll stay up for more than one afternoon this January.

Google “who dey vs. who dat” for a good NY Times article which gets into the debate. Bengals fans may have more widely used “who dey” before Saints fans widely used “who dat” but it’s unlikely Saints adopted the chant because of the Bengals, more likely it was based off cultural influences and the popularity of similar chants used at New Orleans high schools in the 1970s.
