Browns get first win, while Vikings drop to 0-3

i-2 Getty Images

On a Sunday afternoon where the AFC North regained some luster, its last-place team pulled the biggest surprise.

The Browns, four days after trading tailback Trent Richardson to Indianapolis in a stunning move, rallied to beat the Vikings 31-27 in Minneapolis on Sunday. The win is the Browns’ first of the season and Rob Chudzinski’s first as an NFL head coach.

Meanwhile, the Vikings, who made the playoffs in 2012, are now 0-3.

This wasn’t the prettiest game — the teams combined for seven turnovers, with Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer throwing three picks after an impressive start. However, Hoyer played well on the game’s pivotal drive, completing six of his last nine passes, with the final throw a seven-yard TD to tight end Jordan Cameron with 51 seconds left that proved the ultimate margin of victory for Cleveland.

Cameron, who’s emerged as one of the keys to the Browns’ passing game, hauled in three TD passes on Sunday. One was on a fake field goal, with punter Spencer Lanning hitting the uncovered Cameron for six in the second quarter. That gave Cleveland a 24-14 second-quarter lead.

Minnesota would then score the next 13 points, and it held the lead until late in the fourth quarter. But for the second straight week, the Vikings surrendered a touchdown in the final minute.

The Vikings have now allowed at least 31 points in each of their first three games. Moreover, their special teams disappointed for a second straight week. In addition to the field-goal fake, the Browns also pulled off a fake punt to set up a field goal.

The week ahead figures to be interesting for both teams. Hoyer wasn’t perfect in his first Browns start, but he had his moments. The question now is how the Browns, who begin a three-game homestand in Week Four vs. Cincinnati, proceed at quarterback once Brandon Weeden (thumb) returns. The Vikings, meanwhile, have to regroup for a trip to London to play the Steelers on Sept. 29.

Its a sad, sad state of affairs here in Viking Land. Today was the newest low for me as a lifelong fan. Time for some serious changes to be made on and throughout this organization. We get another week of the same recycled sound bites from Frazier and company. Then he gets to stand on the sideline with his arms crossed all game again next week and recycle his same comments again.

Well, it’s clear that the Vikings fans were right.

Christian Ponder’s last performance against the Packers was a trend, and he’ll have those kinds of games all the time. Jared Allen, in a contract year, will be a beast. The Vikings defense is the best in the NFC North. The three first round picks by Spielman have all come in and made a serious impact right out of the gate. All you Packers fans that are saying the Vikes are bad don’t know what you’re talking about. Adrian Peterson will easily get back to 2000 yards.

Oh, now the part they were right about:

The Packers lost today. I’m already over it.

As a guy who lives in Chicago but isn’t from here , I root for any NFC North team that can shut Bears fans up , but the fact of the matter is that the Vikings reached badly for Ponder in the draft a couple of years ago. Even if they believed he was their guy , they still could have gotten him in the second round , if not lower. He just doesn’t seem to have an NFL arm.

  24. eatitfanboy says: Sep 22, 2013 5:44 PM

Wow, the Browns managed to win a game without their superstar 3.5 yards per carry RB.

LOL- I still can’t get over how people thought trading a guy who had made no significant impact on the field was somehow going to spell doom for an already terrible team.

I’m not saying Richardson won’t someday be a serviceable to above average back, but people on here acted like the Browns had traded Barry Sanders for a ham sandwich.

What actually happened was that they got a mid-first round draft pick for the 16th most productive running back last year. A pick that they can package with their own to land in the top two (if they are not already there) and land a potential franchise QB.

Lastly, I think it’s hilarious that people are lauding the Colts for getting a Top-3 pick for their mid-round first next year. These are the same people who were probably complaining last year that the Browns gave up too much to draft a guy at 3 who probably should have been drafted lower.

  25. tjacks7 says: Sep 22, 2013 5:45 PM

    Dear Mr. Wilf,

It’s time to clean house in Minnesota. Please don’t drag this out like the Childress era. The three losses this year can be directly attributed to poor coaching and poor QB play.

Both this week and last week, the coaching staff has shown the inability to understand the game. Last week by thinking a six point lead put the game in the bag – only to watch the Bears march right down the field for the win. The offensive and defensive play calling leave a lot to be desired. The offensive has no imagination. Roll out on first down (incomplete), run on second down, throw short of chains on third down. Punt on fourth. I ask you to review the film and note how many times you see this? I can guarantee you, the Vikings run the ball on 2nd and 10 over 85% of the time. If I can figure it out, don’t you think opposing teams who get paid to do it can?

P.S. That fake field goal touchdown today was absolutely pathetic to put it mildly. Does the coaching staff even watch the game? Nobody saw a guy wide open just standing there? I would have fired the entire staff at halftime.while I simultaneously cut Christian Ponder, AJ Jefferson Jamarcus Sanford.

Please cut the dead weight before the bye week and start putting together a plan to obtain a real QB in the draft and a real coaching staff.

Thanks in advance. I’m assuming you saw the writing on the wall when you didn’t extend Frazier last year. Might as well dump him and the rest of the staff sooner rather than later.

  26. thepvyharvin says: Sep 22, 2013 5:47 PM

Ponder played better but he still misses receivers and is inaccurate.

Play calling is parochial. I counted 6 3 and outs today.

Wrong. Spielman has had some nice drafts since taking over. He does need to come to the realization that his Ponder pick is not going to work out and move on….other than that, Spielman has drafted players that can contribute to this team winning. Its up to Frazier and company to coach said players and put them in positions on the field to make plays and win. That is where the problem lies. Admit the Ponder mistake, sit him down and move on. If Spielman is influencing Frazier to keep Ponder in there, then its on him.

    teamnorsecore:

Nope, opinions by their very nature can’t possibly be wrong, so you are wrong by logical default. And I don’t understand your argument, my test for a good GM is clearly not the same as yours and I don’t see this “winning” that you are talking about. I have standards that he has fell short of achieving and that’s a failure by my estimation and in my opinion. A few player examples here and there of whatever you are referring to disconnects with me. I’m looking for team success and positioning to win the Super Bowl and I don’t see that in his plan. And yeah of course Ponder was a bad pick, but that’s just one of the many problems he has, and the bottom line is many problems or not many, he has not got the job done.

The specifics aren’t relevant to dissect to judge him, they are only relevant if you want to figure out how to solve the problem. And Step 1 is to determine who is the guy that should be in charge of identifying what the solution is to right the ship. I believe MIN is failing by sticking with their current commander. His football logic and player/coaching evaluation skills seem quite weak to me.

  43. mnmarine0351 says: Sep 22, 2013 6:04 PM

Yeah, sorry strategy but the GM is not the problem. Hes made some mistakes such as ponder and carleson but hes not the reason the team is losing on gameday. The draft day trade with the browns last year and subsequent trade back into the 1st round for Harrison Smith speaks for itself

Sometimes its not so much that a team lost a game, it who they lost it to and how.

In all 3 games this year, the Vikings held a second half lead and ending losing to a team that they should have beat. But today’s game takes the cake, the Browns trade away their best offensive player, start a 2nd string journeyman QB on the road and the Viking have managed to find a way to lose the game. Unbelievable.

Good game Brownies. Ol’ Chudz put a whooping on us today. As for the Vikings, Ponder wasn’t even close to their biggest problem today. I’d put him behind uninspired game planning, an awful secondary, nonexistent guard play, a giant hurt slow moving right tackle, and horrible linebackers. Still, Otto Graham he is not. It’s shaping up to be a long year. To everyone who thinks Cassel is the answer, I agree. If you want to guarantee that the Vikings pick in the top 5. There is a lot of football left, and many questions yet to be answered. Stay true my purple friends. Skol!

  53. banlarson says: Sep 22, 2013 6:21 PM

For all you Ponder sympathizers take a look at these stats:
    Ponder 2013: 691 yds passing, 2 TD, 5 Int 220/game.
Opponents: 970 yds passing, 8 TD, 6 Int
    323/game

    Last year:
    Ponder 2935 yds, 18 TD, 12 Int
    Opp 4192 yds, 28 TD, 10 Int

Whether you think Ponder is “adequate” or “not the problem”, I’d argue that if you are consistently getting it handed to you at one position, non-crazy organizations make a change. Bench this bum and give the rest of your team a chance to win. Cleveland started a 3rd string QB and got 321 yards and 3 TDs. 2 TDs and 5 Int and consistently getting out passed by 100+ yards is a PROBLEM.

  54. banlarson says: Sep 22, 2013 6:24 PM

First of all, the trade will never get me a championship, since I am not a Browns fans.

Second, I don’t know how pointing out that trading Richardson was not necessarily the disaster many were making it out to be is somehow making this win “all about Trent Richardson”.

Third, give me one measurable statistic that paints Richardson as anything more than a barely serviceable NFL running back.

He was the 16th best RB in the NFL last year, the very definition of serviceable. Here is a partial list of all the RBs that were better:

    Shonn Greene
    Steven Jackson
    Ben Jarvis Green Ellis
    Reggie Bush
    Stevan Ridley
    Matt Forte

Which one of those guys would you trade a first round draft pick for?

worse loss in the three years – you hope a qb develops after 2 years and turns it up a notch. Not good – basically, you have to punt him at the end of the season. Then, the coaching staff looks like Obama running America. All talk – no detail. I mean, you never heard of a fake punt or fake FG? Geeze. It’s a free fall and 2 wins might be tough.

Allow me to be among the many to congratulate the Viking brass for spending 18 million on Greg Jennings …

Now that he’s overcome his brainwashing, you can expect 2 or 3 catches per game for about 34 yards.

Skoal Vikings! … for thinking you were purchasing a number one receiver …

  76. cwilliams468 says: Sep 22, 2013 7:31 PM

Ponder’s fumble was not remotely his fault. The guy was running for his life all day. Horrible blocking/scheme. Loadholt has had how many “ole’s” this season? Signed his contract and now he is done. And Kali? Awful. You could see in the preseason this team had no sense of urgency. The vikes offense AND defense line have been awful through 3 games. Most of this is a coaching issue – not a player issue. They simply have to blow up this coaching staff. The Vikes have the talent to win – NOT the coaching staff.

I am very proud of my Browns. A lot of distraction with the trade and a lot of ridicule in all forms of media, but they got it together and pulled out the win.

Hoyer didn’t let the INTs bury him. He hung in there and engineered the big game-winning drive on the road. Not bad for a 2nd NFL start. Great to see Gordon back again. Wonder what might have been in the first 2 games if he had played. And the league had better take notice. Our front 7 is for real.

Every day is a great day to be a Browns fan, but all the better when that day comes with a WIN! WOOF WOOF!!!!

    GO BROWNS!!!

    @eatitfanboy …

You’ll have to excuse me. Although I’m a diehard Steelers fan (and that alone explains my current irritability), I’m also a lifelong Bama fan and sometimes get a little schizy when shifting between here and CFT. Trent was so much more than a serviceable back for the Tide. But yes, I suppose that’s exactly what he’s been thus far in the NFL. I do think he’s capable of much more and was thrilled with the trade because it’s a better environment for him. As for the Browns, have said for years I’d like to see our historic rivals become more competitive. Then again, at this moment I’d just like to see us become even a little competitive …

  86. Deb says: Sep 22, 2013 9:51 PM

    @hatesycophants …

You mean with the Steelers? The short answer is that some bad decisions are catching up to us. The defense has been outperforming the offense for years. Now we’ve lost some talent on defense and haven’t been playing well against the run. We’re not getting the turnovers. That puts more burden on the offense. We lost our great offensive-line coach to a head-coaching position at UTEP. Our o-linemen are inexperienced. We don’t have the quality personnel to execute Haley’s ground game. Ben and the receivers aren’t adapting well to Haley’s structured system.

Maybe they can turn it around tonight. But the team still has a lot of issues.

The two teams the Packers lost to won a total of 21 games last year.

The two teams the Packers lost to won a total of 21 games last year.

    ————————————————-

Ah, here are two more examples of a fan base that lives in the past.

Interestingly enough everyone plays against this year’s version of teams, not last year’s. For example, the Vikings played Seattle, Chicago, Indianapolis & Washington last year. In 2011 none of those teams had a winning record, yet none had fewer than 10 wins in 2012. See how that works now?

So, let’s look at THIS YEAR’S teams.

    Vikings opponents: Lions 2-1, Bears 3-0 & Browns 1-2. Total win/loss of 6-3

    Packers opponents: 49ers 1-2, Redskins 0-3 & Bengals 2-1. Total win/loss of 3-6.
(The Packers have also played two teams coming off of short weeks. Nice little scheduling favor along with never playing back-to-back road games this year. The Vikings do it twice, including going to Green Bay the week after traveling to Seattle.)

Minnesota has played the more difficult schedule.

Don’t misunderstand, this was a terrible loss today by the Vikings. A total team effort, as has been their first two games.

  97. fmc651 says: Sep 23, 2013 6:34 AM

Ponder passes were hanging so long all game ; the WR were tempted to wave for a fair catch. He isn’t a smart football player. He takes for ever to make his reads and get rid of the ball.He isn’t the only problem right now but to say its not his fault is wrong.
Ponder’s lack of ability puts added pressure on the defense. AD runs against 8-9 man fronts because of him as well. Thanks Christian. Fraizer needs to sit him or risk losing his job.

  98. shaggytoodle says: Sep 23, 2013 10:32 AM

    @truthserum

Nice try on the tougher schedule, but the Lions wins came against winless teams as well as 2 of the Bears andthe only browns W, that’s cute that u try convince urself that the the lions and browns, are anywhere close to the same level as SF and cinci.
