Lions running back Reggie Bush’s knee injury is not severe. But it is serious enough that he’s planning to sit on the bench today in Washington.
We noted on Friday that the Lions were thinking of holding Bush out as a precaution, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reported this morning that that’s exactly what the Lions are planning to do today: Bush is expected to sit.
That’s a big blow for the Lions’ offense because Bush has looked sensational for the game and a half that he’s been healthy. But if this makes Bush more healthy for the long run, it’s the right move. In fact, the Lions made a big mistake when they didn’t play it safe with Bush last week: After he got hurt and left the game against the Cardinals, he returned for one play -- on which he looked awkward taking a handoff and promptly fumbled.
With Bush out, Joique Bell will be the Lions’ primary running back, while backups Mikel Leshoure and Theo Riddick may get their first carries of the season.
