Report: Rivera safe through the end of season

New York Giants v Carolina Panthers

Ron Rivera’s emotions in the aftermath of the Panthers’ 38-0 win over the Giants were clear — he looked like a man pardoned.

But according to Tom Sorensen of the Charlotte Observer, Rivera has nothing to worry about for the time being.

Citing a source, Sorensen reported that Rivera would not be replaced during the season, and that was true even before the game against the Giants.

While consistent with owner Jerry Richardson’s past (he let George Seifert lose 15 straight in 2001), it’s also curiously timed.

Rivera started his first two seasons 2-8, and now has a career record of 14-21. He has a 2-14 record in games decided by a touchdown or less. The Panthers now have a bye week and two road games before they play in Charlotte again.

By that time, it should be more clear whether Rivera and the Panthers are making real progress, or whether Sunday’s win was against a team with more problems than his own.
