Steelers show a pulse, if it’s not too late

Chicago Bears v Pittsbugh Steelers Getty Images

The Steelers best offensive play was a roughing the kicker penalty on the Bears.

And it might have sparked something.

Just when it appeared the Bears were turning this one into a rout, the Steelers cut the lead to 24-10 on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Antonio Brown. That came after the Bears extended a Steelers drive by running over punter Zoltan Mesko.

The Bears had pushed their lead to three touchdowns on Major Wright’s interception return for a touchdown, following Marc Trestman’s decision to go for a fourth down which led to a Michael Bush touchdown.

Whether the Steelers can build on their flicker of offense remains to be seen.

    You can’t even punt effectively.

    Wish it wasn’t the Bears.

  6. holeinone09 says: Sep 22, 2013 10:05 PM

While I hope at some point they become solid NFL players, Gilbert, DeCastro and Adams are plain horrible right now. Defensive players are running around and through them like they are turnstyles. Ben is clearly hearing footsteps on every snap and it has to be impacting his timing. These OL are 1and 2 round draft choices. Come on. I am always going to cheer for the Steelers no matter what but this is frustrating to watch over and over with the OL. And we need some turnovers!

  7. larryboodry says: Sep 22, 2013 10:05 PM

Still a 2 TD lead, but the Bears need to get the momentum back in the 3rd. quarter.

    @thestrategyexpert …

Florio isn’t a Steelers fan and has slammed us as much or more than any other team. He took the Steelers because they haven’t gone 0-3 in their modern era. However … there’s a first time for everything. Sigh.

I love my Steelers and we have too much talent for this nonsense. As we say in the South, someone needs to be slapped.

    They both have two chins.

    But point taken.

Hit Buttler and he’ll gladly sit on the sideline.

Your defense is the oldest starting unit in the NFL – offense or defense.

    You’ll be like the Pirates.

Your city is second rate. Take away the steroids and guess what? You’re seeing it.

I look forward to years of terrible Pittsburgh football.

See that’s where I’m seeing a lot of issues, I mean you can complain about the coaches sure or anything, but first and foremost it starts with having player talent and I think this team hasn’t done a good job in managing their player talent for the long-term and they just don’t have enough of it to work with amongst other issues.

I completely agree that we’ve made some terrible player personnel moves. I’ve said that on many other threads–including another thread tonight. But we still have some talented guys on this team who need to play like the professionals they are. And they are capable of doing that–as they’ve just demonstrated.

Im not a steelers fan, but I am a fan of football. Some of the comments on here are ridiculous Collinswoth and Michele’s break it down, IE youngest offensive line in football, back up running backs, Heath millers first game back, no pouncey, no foote, at least 7starters gone from last season, yet steeler haters, and even steeler fans themselves want to blame, Haley, tomlin, and Ben !?! It’s one thing to just come on this site and trash talk against the teams you hate, but to have uneducated comments as a NFL fan, just makes you look childish and petty. I hate Brady, Rodgers and a few others, but I respect the players, and the teams, and at least try to be analytical.

Disregard the turnovers for a minute. Heath added a much needed boost to the offense, the running game looked almost mediocre, the defense gave up something like 230 yards. Ben had costly turnovers, but he brought them back to within 4 points. The o line was terrible once again, Ben had very little time to set properly. As far as fair weather fans go, any fan base has them. A fan who point it out is most likely a fan who does/did the same thing when their team struggled/who is struggling, I live in Indiana and have 2 kids, it’s hard enough finding extra money in the budget. I watched the entire game. The painful start, the miraculous comeback, and the crushing defeat. 0-3 sucks but there was plenty of positives to look at, fix the turnovers and good things will happen.

Didn’t you see the looks on the faces of the Rooney’s in the press box… there will be slaps…
and I think Ben gets the first…. He is not in the game those two fumbles were horrible and his passing is inconsistent… let him sit on the bench a game or two and let him think about it….

We’re Number 1…..in the draft pick race

  57. jmblosser82 says: Sep 23, 2013 9:14 AM

I really wouldn’t call ben inconsistent, 15 incompletes, 2 int(1 during trash time). I would call 5-6 inc on Ben, 2-3 were deep balls, got his elbow hit once. Ben completed 26 for over 400 yards. He had rushers in his face almost instantly on mist if his drop backs. Heath was a big boost, I feel better about the Viking game.
Fix the line, fix the fumbles(even Trent Dilfer pointed out even the best QBs throw INTs)and this team will pick up some wins but at this point 8-8 is the best they can hope for.

  58. southcarolinamike says: Sep 23, 2013 10:28 AM

A pulse? That’s putting it kindly. They lost by 17 and the QB had two ints and three fumbles with two recovered by the Bears. Ben is directly responsible for the Bears scoring 17 points. The defense is playing an outdated scheme (evidence is how easily teams are picking up the blitzes) and doesn’t produce turnovers…zero in 2013. If a college team played as bad as the Steelers did last night, they would lose by 35+ points and everyone would be talking about an early season Big Ten destroying a MAC school. Hint: As bad as the Steelers are now, they are like a MAC school in college football.

The Steelers aired it out last night and Ben passed for 400+ yards for the fourth time in his career. Isn’t this what the fans want to see? Be careful of what you wish for. I’m not a fan of Haley, but don’t blame him for last night. The loss falls right at the feet of Ben and his turnovers. He has always turned the ball over, but had a better team around him to save him from himself.

  59. Deb says: Sep 23, 2013 1:48 PM

    @koenig61 …

Dude, this is getting old. You’re not a Steelers fan, you just play one on PFT where you routinely slam those of us who’ve been bleeding black and gold for years–36 years in my case. Since you have no dog in the hunt, stop criticizing real Steeler fans for taking a RABID interest in our own team. You’re not the only person who posts here that has some football knowledge. The Steelers have lifted me through a lot of hard times, including three cancer battles. I love them. I will always love them. That doesn’t mean I have to wear blinders and pretend they’re better than they are or that they didn’t get where they are through their own devices.

The situation with our backs and offensive line are the result of poor decisionmaking. Our quarterback issues stem from lack of discipline. Can those problems be fixed. Yes, eventually. Can they be improved in the short-term. Yes, possibly. But if I choose to handle our meltdown with gallows humor, that is my business. I don’t need any lectures from outsiders.

    Go Steelers!
