Tannehill leads Dolphins to comeback, 3-0 start

Ryan Tannehill AP

Ryan Tannehill took a huge step in his development as an NFL quarterback, and the Dolphins took one toward legitimacy.

The Dolphins came back for a 27-23 win over the Falcons, getting to 3-0 for the first time since 2002.

Tannehill capped a 13-play, 75-yard drive with a short pass to tight end Dion Sims for the game-winning touchdown, showing poise throughout after an early fumble and interception.

The win was also impressive for the Dolphins, who played most of the game without pass-urhser Cameron Wake (knee).

The Falcons now drop to 1-2, allowing the Saints to open up a two-game lead in the NFC South.

    Yet again, a game-sealing INT for Ryan, Mr. Anti Clutch.

    Alright , now — come on , guys , Miami didn’t win this game , Atlanta lost it. The Dolphins are my favorite team , and I’m happy with the win , but they probably did not deserve to win this game.
    Still , if you told me they’d be 3-0 after the first three games , I’d have told you you were nuts. It doesn’t get any easier for the Fins next week.

    Tannehill is looking like Drew Brees out there. I don’t know if he has the arm strength, but nine different Dolphins caught a pass. That kind of ball distribution is very impressive for a second year player against top shelf competition. Maybe it’s time to quit slobbering over RG3, and pay attention to a better second year QB who might not be as flashy, but who can win a football game and deliver in the clutch.

  12. jax9113 says: Sep 22, 2013 7:19 PM

    The Dolphins have taken a giant step since last season. We haven’t seen a drive like that in Miami since Marino. This team is real, and with the Pats’ struggles the division could easily be ours. Great win Dolphins.

    Watching this game, it struck me that mentioning Joe Flacco in the same breath as Matt Ryan is a travesty. With all his weapons, Ryan makes Schaub look good. All Flacco does is win. Don’t put him on your fantasy team. You will be disappointed. He doesn’t care about stats; all he does is win. And don’t give me that crap about a devastating defense. The Ravens are still averaging 2.3 TDs a game against their defense.

    While you are at eating crow, let me throw in the 49er Messiah, Colin Kaepernick. Kind of wish you had Alex Smith back? Or perhaps you want to compare Washington’s wonderboy. RGII sure looks human this season doesn’t he; outplayed by second tier guy Matt Stafford.

    LMAO!!!

  14. scmems07 says: Sep 22, 2013 7:19 PM

    tannehil has now out played two of the best qb’s in the game in luck and ryan. Defense who was short handed played solid, Jordan came in and was pressuring ryan often into bad throws on third down, Sturgis is money, coaches are on point, and they are only getting better. Need guys to get healthy and the sky is the limit for this team

    Matt Ryan is said to have had Donovan McNabb as his idol. He has Julio Jones & Roddy White over Pinkston & Mitchell. His “clutch” interceptions have no excuse.

    That’s something the two Matt’s have in common. They fold under pressure.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
    Here’s the thing. Past Dolphins teams would have lost this game (and the one they controlled last week). That’s a HUGE step forward for the Dolphins.
    Yes, the Falcons had injuries but so do the Dolphins. The team looked very shaky on both sides of the ball at different times throughout the game but they rallied to right the ship and earn a victory against a quality Falcons team (even with key injuries).
    Many Dolphins fans have been saying they could be a strong team. It was the media (and gun-shy fans “from Missouri”) who laughed at the team and criticized the off-season moves. The fact is that Ireland and Philbin have built a solid playoff caliber team. It is all about execution at this point and that has been good so far.
    What are you talking about that 4-5 minute drive ending in a TD leaving ATL 38 secs left is the absolute definition of “winning the game” get a clue man RT17 is the real deal.
  22. vaphinfan says: Sep 22, 2013 7:33 PM
    @craniator
    how did atlanta exactly blow this one? It seemed to me the phins defense did pretty well 2nd half besides the tannehill fumble with short field position.
  23. jrcoop says: Sep 22, 2013 7:35 PM
    This was their third come from behind win, but this was the most impressive. Atlanta controlled the game right up until the Dolphins final drive, then the Dolphins did what winning teams do, they dug down and found a way to when it.
    No, the Falcons didn’t lose it as they dominated the game; on the contrary, the Dolphins got up off the mat went out and won it. They’re not just moving towards legitimacy, they proved today that they are right now.
    PS.
    Hopefully the Saints don’t consider the Dolphins legit, but I bet they do.
    I like your post, but that sentence… Tannehill has a cannon arm. He’s out-thrown Wallace in practice, so arm strength isn’t the concern, the concern has been weapons around him and his inexperience at the position. We can see dude is coming along well, Philbin isn’t throwing too much on him.
    I love that the Fins are 3-0… But the play calling was so super conservative! 2nd and 10 in the third…I’m not calling a running play up the middle! This team could be special with a little ingenuity, but as an old Miami fan, we’ve seen this before and right now the Pats are thinking that they only have to beat Miami…
    @craniator—–I love it when people say ‘so and so team didn’t win the game, the other team lost it.’ Tannehill moved the offense because Atlanta’s defense didn’t stop him. Isn’t that a quality play (s) that defines the best QB’s, putting their team on their back and getting the win. Poor craniator. Has a cranium with no gray matter inside it.
Two of these wins have come against playoff teams last year. These wins have come with a roster that has been fighting key injuries. So keep your biases in check and give credit where its due. Joe Philbins and the rest of the fins coaching staff deserve much credit for doing what they are supposed to do. Prepare you team to win the games each and every week!
    Although they started poorly and trailed for all of 38 seconds, the game was fairly even statistically except maybe in time of possession. The turnovers were even, and it was basically a tale of two halves with Atlanta taking the first half, and Miami the second.
    The Dolphins have also changed logos. I remember when the Bengals went to striped helmets in ’81 and went to the Super Bowl. Maybe, OK, I won’t get ahead of myself, but at least now it is a realistic expectation to say “Playoffs” and not sound like JIM MORA!
    Great coaching job, REGIS!
