Kaepernick uses Twitter for motivation

NFL players use Twitter for all sorts of things.  49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick uses it as motivation.

Specifically, Kaepernick has “favorited” a series of hostile and/or vulgar messages based on his subpar performances the past two weeks.  He was asked about it on Tuesday by reporters.

“It’s something that I do for me,” Kaepernick said, via quotes distributed by the team.  “It helps me.”

He later acknowledged that, indeed, it provides motivation.

A couple of the messages express a preference for Alex Smith, who is now 3-0 during his first season in Kansas City.

The practice serves as a reminder that, while NFL players are professional athletes, they often benefit from outside stimulation.  For Kaepernick, that stimulation is coming from largely anonymous strangers.

If it works, maybe 49ers fans should create dummy Twitter accounts and start sending more hostile and/or vulgar messages to Kaepernick.

He’ll need all the motivation he can get on Thursday.  Kaepernick faces a Rams team that beat him in 2012.

  1. Kaepernick could go zero for the rest of the season and Niners fans would still think Harbaugh did the right thing by giving Kaepernick Smith’s job.

  2. Reason #593773 why we are lucky to have Russell Wilson and not Colin Kapernick. Russell uses twitter to post pictures of kids he visits every Tuesday at children’s hospital, or for bible verses, that’s it.

  3. When you are coached by a lunatic such as Harbaugh, you become one.

Look what is happening to the team, can’t get motivation within, so you look elsewhere.

The 9ers are in the early stages of destruction mode.

  4. Harbaughing’s taking hold there, I guess. If throwing for the league’s worst PR against a division archrival isn’t enough motivation – and it wasn’t, given the loss to Indy – SF has a huge problem.

  5. I don’t know why players like him use Twitter. It’s asking for trouble, because there are plenty of people who probably can’t stand him. Now they can
Twitter him, and say what they like. The way he is playing now, I don’t blame them. The 49ers thought they were so great, and now they don’t look too good at all.

  6. People are crazy! Some of these psychos on Twitter seriously need to be locked up after some of the crap I’ve seen them tweet towards Kaepernick.

You’d think he just killed someone! #aaronhernandez

  7. Kapp is not the problem.. but I got to give props to the teams that are truly just out coaching the niners!! wheres the game plan…gore was on his way to tearing it up and we stop running the ball?
why is willis running up and down the field trying to cover wr?? no wonder he pulled a groin..do we even have a nickel def?? we have been out coached two weeks in a roll!!! Hey maybe our team is just tired of winning two yrs in a roll.. im ready to see some young guys get their chance…gooooooo 49ers!!! keep on hating
    crybabys…..lol

  8. Maybe if he stopped wasting his time looking at what people are saying about him on twitter…
And spent more time preparing for the game.

None of this would be an issue.

  9. Hope this kid can pull it together before his confidence takes a big hit. Has all the talent in the world to make big things happen.

    Also dead link.

  10. And welcome to the fast moving, yesterday-you-were-great, today you are yesterday’s news National Football League. Kaepernick is now firmly linked with RG III as 2013’s version of what used to be, (succeeding 2012 incumbent Cam Newton). Collectively, two of the darlings of ’12 are 1-5 and both are clearly not handling the sudden downturn of events well at all. While fellow ’12 risers Russell Wilson and Andrew Luck continue to ascend, Kaepernick and Griffin resemble more of an American Idol contestant coming off a horrid vocal performance and not reacting constructively to biting criticism from Simon Cowell. There is still plenty of season left and both could soon rebound into prior form, but showing ridiculously thin skin so quickly does not bode well for the prospect of success in ’13 for either them or their team.

  11. Wow has Wilson or luck been to a superbow???the answer is yes!!! To watch kapp play!!!! that’s right haters! u guys wish ur qbs were half as talented as kapp!!!!!! niners will be back! keep on hating!!!!

  12. Some of the stuff people have said to him is pretty nasty and unnecessary. Didn’t know that being a faceless keyboard troll was a fulltime job.

  13. Seahawks fan here.

Kaep is gonna be fine. Every QB ends up on the wrong side of the win-loss column, and we’re only three games into the season.

With that said: Twitter has gotten more than a few pro athletes into trouble. If I were him, I’d get off Twitter and let the scum of teh innerwebz eat ether.

No reason to start panicking…unless they lose on Thursday. Then panic like a manic tweeter.

  14. Kaepernick doesn’t need twitter, he needs to go to school….football training school!

He needs to learn how to better use those powerful, throbbing quad muscles of his, and that golden, heavenly, muscular arm of his to lead his team to success in the NFL football league.

  15. Considering EJ Manuel has accumulated more fantasy points than Kaep at this point in the season, I’m all for him finding whatever motivation necessary.

Your 4 points this past week almost sunk me, Colin! The week before wasn’t much better! Get it together

  16. That’s showing some worrisome immaturity if your star QB gives 2 sh!ts what people are saying on twitter about him! That’s the kind of crap I’m trying to deal with with my 16 yr old daughter for crying out loud! lol

  17. Russell uses trying to make his team better as motivation. Wilson uses every moment on and off the field as motivation to improve. OUR Pro Bowl QB uses day by day to motivate himself!! That’s what you do when you comPETE everyday……not between ME moments. God its great to be a Seahawk!

  18. Those are dumb *ss fans writing that crap. If they knew anything about football they’d recognize he has no one to throw to. Lot of injured players on the offense. It makes it easy to cover Bolden. I like Kaepernick. I’m not a 49ers fan but they will be fine once they get some players back. Those people are rude and disrespectful for no reason.

  19. Interesting how most of these negative comments are probably from Seahawks fans. This is NO different than the coaches who put quotes up from “haters” in their locker rooms to motivate their players……professional players from around the league talk about it all the time. I’m sure Mr. Pete Carrol occasionally does this too…….oh wait that’s ok though if it’s your beloved Seahawks.

  20. if twitter works then just say Kap your the best very best greatest QB in nfl history you have the rams game all sowed up..its day b4 game day but notch it in the win column right now “..lol

  22. Hey, remember after the GB game when Krap was one of the two best QBs in the league (and that was only because Manning was thrown in as a life time achievement award, not because he was as good as Krap)?

Remember when Bouldin couldn’t be covered and how y’all stole him from Baltimore?

Remember when the Seattle game was payback time and Wilson was going to become an eyebrow pirate?

Remember when Indy – at home for crying out loud – was simply a stepping stone to the Superbowl?

Remember when Crybaughby was the best coach in the NFL – EVER?

Ohhhh, good times. I miss those times.

  23. Joey49er, what is his talent? Let’s say you forget about mental fortitude, intellect, and maturity, what exactly does he do but run around the edge well? Kiss himself? He is a mental midget, and name me one of those that went on to win Super Bowls at quarterback. Go ahead, we’ll wait. Go ahead and think of QB’s who win super bowls, often repeatedly, you will see a trend in maturity and intellect.

Remember when the Niners were good? Me neither.
Remember when your team won anything? Me neither. Trophy case empty? thought so..

  25. Spend less time making comercials, doing intrviews, posing nude, getting tatoos, and worrying what people say on social media, and more time studying film, thanking the good lord, and praising your teamates and their hard work. Then maybe, just maybe you will have a chance at a long and fruitful pro career, keep it up (the immature style) and you will be a one-half season wonder. And Kaepernick, your skillset is much better then “that”!!! Signed, Seahawk and Russell Wilson fan…

  26. Got to love niner FANS! Always saying Seahawk fans are harers! C’mon MAN!!! You don’t love your own qn after a cpuple of bad games! YOU GUYS ARE HATERS, THE BIGGEST!!!
