The Chiefs may not have left guard Jeff Allen in the lineup for Sunday’s matchup with the Giants, so they promoted another guard from the practice squad to assure they’ll have enough healthy bodies at the position come kickoff.

The team has elevated guard Rishaw Johnson to the 53-man roster. Johnson signed with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent last season and spent most of the season on the practice squad before being elevated to the active roster near the end of the season. He didn’t play in any games, however, and was cut at the end of preseason. The Chiefs signed him to their practice squad a few days later.

Allen is battling a groin injury and they were carrying eight offensive linemen on the roster before Johnson got the call on Tuesday, so the need for extra depth was a pretty obvious one in Kansas City.

The Chiefs waived linebacker Josh Martin, an undrafted rookie who played at Columbia, to open up a roster spot for Johnson.
