Bucs replacing Josh Freeman with Mike Glennon

Mike Glennon AP

What looked inevitable but was often denied has now happened.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Buccaneers are making a move at quarterback, replacing starter Josh Freeman with rookie Mike Glennon.

Coach Greg Schiano said Sunday he never thought about replacing Freeman, but apparently he reconsidered.

Freeman’s own play through three games was enough to justify the move (45.7 percent completions, more interceptions than touchdowns, 59.3 rating, 0-3 record), but this one has much bigger repercussions. For a quarterback who could have played his way into a big contract, Freeman’s now forced to watch a third-round rookie take over, and ponder the market opportunity he just squandered.

Thought we’d see this after the bye, but this was inevitable. They’ve seen Josh for 4 years as starter and 5 years total. They know what they have in him, a QB who hasn’t developped. No harm in seeing what the kid can do at this p0int.

Also, how much money did Josh Freeman lose between the 6-4 start last year and now? He’s the anti Joe Flacco, lost himself a ton of money through his play.

  13. spyder9669 says: Sep 25, 2013 9:04 AM

Can honestly say i’ve never seen him play but he looks pretty big so he probably can at least throw…that makes him a great fit in Minnesota! Let’s do it!

  16. bigginfragable says: Sep 25, 2013 9:07 AM

Many comments to be made about this being a prelude to him being traded.

I bet a Freeman for Weedon trade straight with some 6th or 7 rounders being swapped in the process.

Weedon never really seemed to have the backing of the new management and Hoyer played pretty well for them. Plus the Browns are always looking to trade someone.

  19. metrocritical says: Sep 25, 2013 9:12 AM

Clearly, Freeman has under performed but one also has to question the quality of coaching he has received. The physical gifts were once obvious and the lack of development from his one big year suggests that those in charge of the offense have nit done their job to help him hone the mental side of his game. If he’s going to ever thrive, JF needs to go to a team with a qb guru and a qb friendly system. Otherwise, he’s got journeyman written all over him.

Now Bucs fans know what it was like when we had Aaron Brooks as the Saints QB. We knew he stank but the national media always propped him up and praised him. Except for Michael Irvin, I remember he and another panelist were asked who the most overrated QB in the NFL is and he eagerly, emphatically said “Ooh, ooh! Aaron Brooks!”

We’ve seen enough. He will never be an upper echelon NFL quarterback.
High School: Record 9-3, 7-4, No Championship
    Kansas: 44TDs, 34 INTs, a losing record
Bucs: 5 years, no playoff appearances, no improvement, the 10-6 record under Radio was against a ridiculously large number of bad teams starting rookies or backups.

The owners need to go, the GM needs to go, Schiano is a clown.

  30. 6ball says: Sep 25, 2013 9:37 AM

    .

If Glennon is mediocre, it will be a marked improvement.

The problem isn’t the coaching. It’s the performance, or non-performance of the players.

    .

  31. godofwine330 says: Sep 25, 2013 9:39 AM

I said before, the coach not supporting the QB made the QB lose confidence in himself and his abilities. The QB is playing worse than he ever has in his 4 years and I believe it is directly related to the coach’s confidence in him. Harbaugh showed confidence in Alex Smith and he looked better than he ever had before. I’m just saying.

So here is one scenario. The Bucs start winning with Glennon ala Fourty Niners and Kapernick. Let’s hope. Scenario #2 , the something to prove new QB takes chances to make plays, gets seriously injured and the “old” rejected one has to take the field. Not pretty! The game will be blacked out either way!

Fat Freeman used to stand in the pocket eating a chalupa knock a DT on his a** and throw the sloppiest yet accurate touchdown pass.

Skinny Freeman just looks like a wuss and gets sacked all the time.

Time to go back to the drive-thru and grow back the curl in my opinion…

  42. polamalusboyfriend says: Sep 25, 2013 10:02 AM

Another case of the media and the pundits propping up a guy based on potential. The NFL landscape is littered with failed QBs, but it seems like some get a longer trial period than others…depends on the team, coaches, owner…but his complete lack of consistency was maddening.

I see traces of this type of play all over the league this year…I hoope Manuel, Griffith, Smith (Geno), Newton, and others get as much time as time as Freeman got. Its hard to drop a high pick, and even harder to drop one that has won a few. Best of luck, Josh…maybe you can make some money somewhere with a clipboard.

  43. thehuddleisondeathrow says: Sep 25, 2013 10:02 AM

  47. indianajet says: Sep 25, 2013 10:10 AM

And to think, back in April, most Bucs fans who post here thought they were Superbowl bound because they “stole” Revis from the Jets.

    $16 million/yr
Two draft picks (including #13 this year)
“Elite” corner coming off of major knee surgery =

    0-3

…and just wait until Revis demands and holds out for guaranteed money next year.

Hear that Bucs fans…..the sound of Jets fans laughing at you.

  48. konaehukai says: Sep 25, 2013 10:15 AM

When Freeman was drafted, remember Gruden with the ESPN crew saying great pick, and turning around and clapping.

If Gruden had been the coach the Bucs still would have picked this guy. Time for a change.

  49. scubasteve4930 says: Sep 25, 2013 10:20 AM

    @indianajet

This move has nothing to do with our Defense. Revis has been extremely solid, like the rest of our Defense has, being in the top 10 of every category.

THe 0-3 record comes solely from our QB play, hence the change.

  50. supremecomander says: Sep 25, 2013 10:22 AM

If the Bucs hire Lovie Smith they might as well trade Darrelle Revis. You don’t pay a CB $16M to sit in zone coverage and guard the flat.

If you think Lovie is gonna change his system, you don’t know f/b. Lovie can’t coach offense, his only claim to fame is coaching the heck out of the Tampa 2 defense.

Sullivan had to dumb down Offense after 4 games last year. Bucs won a few until “Freeman’ adjusted offense was on tape. Until offense can be managed properly, Bucs going nowhere. Freeman is gifted but stuck on college level, physical skill is enough mind set. Trade…no one interested. Watch.

I didn’t even know that people could have remembered Pat Ryan. I mean, he was a serviceable backup quarterback for the Jets; but I didn’t think people would actually remember him.

You must be a fantastic Jets fan, or you hate the Chiefs so badly that you remembered when Ryan came in and thrashed them in the playoffs in 1986. I mean, Ken O’Brien just wasn’t getting it done before he got hurt!

    Good call!

Also remember the Bucs had a 73 yard TD called back because the LT was 6 inches too far back. Freeman is being mad a scapegoat for mental errors due to bad coaching. Schiano and Dominic know there jobs are on the line and are trying to cover their as*es..

This is a terrible move by Schiano. He really is in over his head as an NFL coach. He thinks he can be the next Bill Bellichek (They call him discount Bellichek in Tampa) by starting Glennon. Tampa fans are screwed for the rest of this season, and probably the next few years as it will take time to replace their current GM, probably at the end of this season, and then Jacka.. er Schiano at the end of next season. Anyways, that is how I see it going down. Good Luck Buc fans….Good Luck!

Schiano has really made a mess of things in Tampa for sure. Nonetheless, Freeman needed to rise above it all and prove he’s worthy of being the leader of that offense. He’s really hurt his credibility in this league. It’s a good lesson for the youth and teen’s aspiring for success; There’s bad coaching and “leadership” everywhere…..LEAD and SUCCEED anyway!!!!

  69. billsfan1 says: Sep 25, 2013 12:14 PM

Schiano did this for one reason… If they go 3-11 the rest of the way, he can say “hey look we have a young guy we are developing” he earns himself one more year…

And after next year when MIke Glennon is a flop, it will be proof that Schiano cant coach with any qb

  70. billsfan1 says: Sep 25, 2013 12:18 PM

I dont follow Tampa real close but i was able to watch two of their games this year… what i see is a team that is poorly coached. Freeman, Martin, WIlliams and Jackson should be a decent enough offense, but they are just over matched and it seems to be coaching more than anything. unable to make in game adjustments to what the teams are doing and they barely lost one game.

The biggest problem they have is their HC cant actually determine what problems the team is having and fix them
