The Cowboys lost defensive end Anthony Spencer for the season on Tuesday when it was determined he needed season-ending knee surgery, but their first roster move in the wake of that development wasn’t to shore up the defensive line.

Nick Eatman of the team’s website announced Wednesday that the Cowboys have signed cornerback Chris Greenwood off the Lions’ practice squad. Greenwood was a 2012 fifth-round pick in Detroit out of tiny Albion College, but didn’t play a game in his rookie year after having abdominal surgery.

Greenwood passed through waivers unclaimed when the Lions cut him on their way to 53 players and wound up on the team’s practice squad. The Cowboys are obligated to pay Greenwood for three weeks on their active roster even if they decide to move in another direction before that time is up.

Morris Claiborne has been wearing a harness after suffering a dislocated shoulder earlier this season, so it makes sense that they’d look to add some depth at the spot. They also signed defensive tackle Drake Nevis on Tuesday, releasing defensive lineman Jerome Lane to make room for Nevis on the roster.
