Dez Bryant fined $7,875 for throat slash gesture

Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant typically celebrates his touchdowns by making an X with his arms, but his choice to add a twist after a score in last Sunday’s victory over the Rams is going to cost him.

Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com reports that Bryant has been fined $7,875 for making a throat slash gesture after scoring the first touchdown in Dallas’ 31-7 win. Bryant was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct for the play and acknowledged his mistake earlier this week.

“I shouldn’t have done it anyway,” Bryant said. “I never put anything with the X. Do the X and go on.”

Bryant also said that he planned to appeal the fine, although it is difficult to imagine what he’d be basing that appeal on given his admission of making the gesture and the fact that the league’s made it clear over the years that they do not consider it an acceptable form of on-field expression.

  1. Oh please! Gimme a break…the NFL once again has it’s priorities out of order. The guy didn’t even do anything and he gets fined yet Bucs players can get by with what amounts to spearing Saints players and the NFL turns a blind eye!

  2. I would like to see what kind of reaction the league would give if a player celebrated by wiping their butt with the ball and then handing it to the official…bwhahahah!

The throat slash gesture is classless and tasteless in any sport.

This comment was 4 up and 16 down when I read it. 4 to 1 in favor of throat slashing gestures. It’s hard to believe that’s what our society has become. The 16 and others to follow should be ashamed of yourselves.

  4. Okay, the NFL is offended by a throat slash gesture yet the Redskins are still the Redskins………I don’t get it.

    who dat!

  7. So the NFL can sell beer to fans at $1 an ounce so they can get wasted and drop f bombs, to each other, opposing players, and even their players if their team ‘a losing. Now the NFL needs undercover police to patrol the stands in some stadiums because of the behavior they provoke. But PG-13 throat slashing is where the line is drawn, that’s not allowed. Are they competing with Sesame Street for ratings. Forbid us to be adults and take the throat slashing as sarcasm. When they take away the fat lady from singing, that’s when I move to soccer.

  8. I’m almost certain that Cortland Finnigan didn’t have his feelings hurt by the throat slash.
    Stop sanitizing everything into oblivion.

I hear the NFL Competition Committee is now looking into disallowing QB’s to audible out with “Kill, Kill, Kill” commands at the line of scrimmage.

  9. I can’t be the only one that thinks that the league is getting out of hand with fines every week for the smallest of things costing players between $5000 and $50000. There are more fines in one week than there were in years of NFL football before. I mean a nearly $8000 fine for a throat slash? That is way past excessive and it borders on the criminal. These are emotional players and I believe unless some over the top behavior like Haynesworth’s helmet stomp or Brandon Merriweather running his helmet into everything like he was a ram most of these things don’t deserve huge fines. Intent is not even considered.

The NFLPA is as pitiful as the useless…err, the union at my job. This is ridiculous.

  10. This is what you get when the NFL is trying to cater to the Glee crowd — he’s clearly a bully for doing that and should be sent to reeducation camp. What a bunch of sissies this league has become.
