NFL fines Whitney Mercilus $15,000 for hit on Joe Flacco

Texans linebacker Whitney Mercilus was flagged for roughing the passer for a hit on Joe Flacco during Sunday’s loss to the Ravens, and now Mercilus has been hit in the paycheck.

Mercilus confirmed that the NFL fined him $15,000 for the hit.

I’m going to appeal it just like every other player does in the league and hopefully get the best out of that situation,” Mercilus told Sports Radio 610.

It’s tough to see any reason Mercilus would win that appeal: His helmet struck Flacco’s chin, and both the officials on the field and the league office agreed that it was a penalty.

Considering he had all of 53 yards passing the first half, how was Flacco even in there long enough to get hit?

This guy needs to get on the Browns… then they could call there defense Mingo Mercilus.

That may be the first time in his 5 year career, there has ever been a roughing penalty called on hitting Joe Flacco. The Refs didn’t call the late low hit directly on Flacco’s knees by JJ Watt as he flung himself in the air to land on his knee.

Perhaps now that Joe is Super Bowl MVP, maybe they will call half the roughing penalties committed. Although that didn’t work for Rothlesberger. That mostly only works for Brady and Matt Ryan.

Dogging him for first half passing yards is quite a step down from the old “will never win a Super Bowl”, but I guess you cling to what you can. Maybe he can aspire to 400+ yard losses with a pick 6 and sack fumble here and there.

Someone actually HIT Joe Flacco last Sunday?

It seems like you should have to hit an actual quarterback to get a roughing the passer penalty.

I don’t know what’s worse, his stupidity or his name.
