Christian Ponder takes majority of snaps in Thursday practice

Britain Vikings Football AP

The Vikings aren’t ready to make a call on who will start at quarterback against the Steelers on Sunday, but the chances that Christian Ponder gets the nod seemed to improve on Thursday.

Coach Leslie Frazier said that Ponder took the majority of snaps in practice, one day after a rib injury kept Ponder from doing as much as the Vikings would have liked during Wednesday’s session. Ponder wore extra padding around the injury, something that he did in college, and said that he felt better than he did on Wednesday.

Frazier also rejected the suggestion that the rib injury could serve as cover for making a change to Matt Cassel after three losses to open up the season.

“It’s purely circumstantial if that happens,” Frazier said, via Ben Goessling of ESPN.com. “I don’t know if there’s any logic in there. We want Christian to play. We want him to get out there and continue to grow and develop as a quarterback.”

The team will wait until after Friday’s practice to make any call about the identity of the starter.

It’s hilarious the Vikings fans want their own QB hurt. Cassell was getting cheered when HE got hurt in KC last year, now he’s the answer in Minnesota. This franchise is a total joke, move to L.A. already. And bring your empty trophy case with you.

Here’s the part that makes me laugh out loud: “We want him to get out there and continue to grow and develop as a quarterback.”

If only he could grow and develop. Alas, I think we’ve seen all the development this guy can do. But, third year’s a charm, right Leslie?

I can’t until you and your pathetic quarterback history..

Come on, gang. Ponder does throw some magnificent floaters. It’s a thing of beauty to see him throw that ten yard crossing pattern over the middle and see the ball lazily meandering toward it’s target. I also love when he puts a little air under it as he throws the out pattern for another pick-six. Such rare talent, really.

Um, did you watch anything but the last couple minutes of those games? Other than a few instances, Ponder has looked like crap. Missing wide open receivers, overthrowing them when he does see them, locking on to a WR and letting the DB jump the route for an INT, 3 yard check down passes in the 2 minute drill when you have to move the length of the field, failure to convert on 3rd down (especially in the red zone)… do I need to go on? Nobody thinks Cassel will come in and be a Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, but what we are doing isn’t working, why not give it a shot? What’s the worst that can happen, we lose?

Lets be realistic. A team with Adrian Peterson is not going to win 0 games, or even 4 games for that matter. Get serious, they would have to TRY to lose every game for that to happen. They have been outscored by a measly 15 pts this year. That is not the characteristics of a 4 win team. Sorry, its just not reality. Fraizer wants to keep his job so he will be coaching to win for the entire season. Think about it, what benefit would Frazier get for flopping?

He’s not getting blamed for the losses dude, he’s getting blamed for his poor play. He isn’t the only problem, but why should that give him a free pass? Every other position in the league loses their job if they stink, why should the QB be any different?

  48. filthymcnasty1 says: Sep 26, 2013 4:25 PM

The Vikings and their distraught fan base regularly provide unintentional comic relief for all who follow the NFL. But yesterday we witnessed a new all time low as Adrian Peterson’s daughter became a Packer troll.

“I can’t believe you lost to the Browns”.

  49. whatjusthapped says: Sep 26, 2013 4:29 PM

Its curious why Frazier would use the words, “continue to grow and develop as a quarterback” in his 3rd year in the NFL.

At this point, the training wheels should come off and the franchise starts making its move toward its stated goal, winning the Superbowl. (Ok, stop laughing and get up off the floor)

All I read about in the off season (better known in Viking country as the paper championship) is how Ponder has turned the corner, he finally has good WR’s (since when is Percy Harvin chicken liver?) and this is the year.

The offensive live has been an absolute joke this year and the defense might be even worse. The 3 losses are anything but Ponder’s fault but no on wants to admit it. Everyone was clamoring for Joe Webb last year and look where that got us. If Cassell starts behind this O-line and with the way they’ve been playing the guy will be coming back to Minnesota in a body bag.

Ponder is averaging 230 yds/game and completion % of 59. League averages are 260 and 62, so he’s not far off.

Also, his YPA is 6.9 vs 7.2 for the rest of the league.

What’s killing him is the turnovers, primarily untimely fumbles which may or may not be all his fault. If we were protecting the ball, we’d be 2-1 or 3-0. The turnovers are what is killing us.

  60. gbmickey says: Sep 26, 2013 6:21 PM

What a scattered and panicked fanbase. After 3 games there is denial in that the thought of a fullback returning, yes I said fullback, will turn around the team. You also have desperation in that fans are attacking the team because of bad qb play, offensive line play, db play, and collectively bad defense (doesnt leave much to be good). Then you have fans that have already given up talking about the draft! Lastly the hardcore trolls are still trying somehow to beat their chest like they are tough. Man it must suck to be a fan of this team and be in this predicament three games in. Good luck with that.

  61. joeyashwi says: Sep 26, 2013 6:24 PM

I’m a Packer fan and like 99% of the great Packer fan base, I am embarrassed by the Packer trolls on every Viking story. Enough of that however…

Ponder and Musgrave have had the opportunity to control the ball and win the last two games but due to both of their ineptitude, they ended up putting their defense in a tough position. The fact is Ponder is NOT even an average QB in this league. My Packers aren’t having a great year so far either, I get that, but give any other team Adrian Peterson and a competent coach and an average QB could find a way to complete passes against an eight man front. I love the Pack-Vikes rivalry and sincerely feel for their fans as this team is too talented to be led by Ponder, Frazier, and Musgrave.

I don’t know where everyone is getting the idea that Ponder is done for. This is truly only his second season since his very first he was put in at the middle of the year and didn’t get an offseason that year. Contrary to popular belief it takes longer to develop than that. Not everyone will be like Luck or Wilson or Kaepernick. He might not be the answer but to evaluate him based on his first season with good receivers is just dumb. Don’t even try saying he had Harvin. Harvin was amazing but one great receiver doesn’t make up for Michael Jenkins and the other no name receivers that they had. I’m embarrassed for the faut weather fans of the Minnesota Vikings.

Always good to have Christian Ponder playing for the vikings. He should remain the starter for another 10 years. Nothing epitomizes viking football better than Christian Ponder at quarterback in yet another viking uniform combination.

Sadly for the vikings the game is outdoors, on natural turf, at night. They never do well in any one of those conditions and this week have to face all three.
