The Titans signed defensive end Kamerion Wimbley to a five-year deal worth up to $35 million before last season, but you wouldn’t know it from the way they used him last weekend.
Wimbley played six snaps against the Chargers, fewer than Keyunta Dawson and Karl Klug, in a happenstance that coach Mike Munchak chalked up to using bigger players for the majority of the afternoon. Wimbley knew he’d be a pass rusher almost exclusively this season, but said it was “surprising” to see so little action and admitted that it’s easier to say he’s not worried about it than it is to actually not worry about it.
“Well, it’s unusual,” said Wimbley, via John Glennon of the Tennessean. “I would definitely like to be out there in the game and be active. But like I say, all I can do is come to practice and work hard and trust the coaches’ decisions on gameday. I feel like we’ve been able to do some good things defensively, so I’m happy about that. You never know how it will play out as far as our rotation. So I just keep working and don’t really worry too much about it -- or try not to worry too much about it.”
Wimbley’s played on 30 percent of the team’s snaps so far this season, a number that isn’t really in line with a cap number of close to $6 million and makes it unlikely that Wimbley will see the final three years of that deal he signed last year.
