The injury watch in New England has been centered on tight end Rob Gronkowski and wide receiver Danny Amendola, but another member of the starting offense may be at risk of missing Week Four’s game with the Falcons as well.
The Patriots announced that right tackle Sebastian Vollmer missed practice for the second straight day. Vollmer sprained his foot against the Buccaneers last weekend and was forced to the bench for the second half.
The veteran could probably play after missing two days of practice if he returned on Friday, but the bigger picture looks better with a rested Vollmer returning when he’s healthy. Marcus Cannon replaced Vollmer last week and would likely be the starter in the event that Vollmer can’t play on Sunday night. It’s hardly a nightmare scenario for the Pats as Cannon has handled himself well when called upon in the last couple of years and is probably a preferable option to a hobbled Vollmer risking further injury.
We’ll see where Vollmer winds up on Friday’s injury report, but there’s not much chance he’s going to be listed as probable once it is released.
