Greg Jennings: Cassel is “more verbal, kind of commanding in the huddle.”

Matt Cassel AP

Matt Cassel is starting at quarterback for the Vikings on Sunday, a move that wasn’t unexpected with Christian Ponder battling a fractured rib.

It’s also a move that the team’s wide receivers are greeting with compliments for the way Cassel leads the offense. Jerome Simpson said, via Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that the team still loves Ponder, but noted that Cassel had “great composure” and that you “can just tell he has that leader in him.”

Greg Jennings shrugged off concerns about a lack of reps with Cassel and said that this week’s starter was “more verbal” than Ponder and “kind of commanding in the huddle.”

“If anything that’s the difference,” Jennings said, via Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press. “That comes with him having much more experience. He’s been in position where he’s had to be a starter for years now. He knows what’s going on. He’s commanding. So is Christian. But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is. Matt’s a very smart guy.”

Given the issues on the offensive line and a frequent lack of creativity in the play calling, it’s hard to know how much a commanding voice will change things for the Vikings. Should they win on Sunday, however, Cassel’s going to have a good chance to continue proving that his presence in the huddle was just what the doctor ordered.

    i.e. …………….he’s very sorry Aaron.

  2. scoops1 says: Sep 27, 2013 9:33 AM

Jennings went on to say…” I still wish I had Rogers throwing me the Ball”

  3. tokyosandblaster says: Sep 27, 2013 9:34 AM

    Clunk clunk….

That was the sound of the bus driving over Ponder. Didn’t take long for Greg to throw his leader under it.

Jennings then signed a Vikings helmet “Ponder Sucks, Greg Jennings”.

Does he actually feel that way about Cassel or has he been brainwashed?

Does Greg make it a point to question the leadership of all his QB’s?

    I’m here all night folks…

  5. gbmickey says: Sep 27, 2013 9:39 AM

But will he take the blame for you when you screw up? Thats the real sign if you approve of the qb isnt it?

  6. rpiotr01 says: Sep 27, 2013 9:41 AM

The world according to Greg Jennings: Matt Cassel > Aaron Rodgers.

  7. tjacks7 says: Sep 27, 2013 9:42 AM

The only QB who could be successful in this offense is someone like Peyton Manning, only because he would audible out of every play Musgrave sent in.

Any worthwhile change has to start with Wilf firing the entire staff.

  8. vikesfansteve says: Sep 27, 2013 9:42 AM

Pretty soon he will be calling Ponder that guy.

  9. ctcheesehead says: Sep 27, 2013 9:42 AM

“Kind of commanding” sure does sound like a resounding endorsement… Must be better than the guy they have in GB now.

  10. glennsyank13 says: Sep 27, 2013 9:43 AM

That’s not good. Jennings didn’t like Rodgers because he took charge too much and didn’t let Jennings dictate anything. He wanted Ponder to act as his putty. Greg’s sister will not be liking this change!

  11. canadianvikingfaniii says: Sep 27, 2013 9:51 AM

Sounds like Greg Jennings is taking a few “trying to be subtle” shots at Christian Ponder, and both QB’s such as, “But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is.”

I have a feeling this guy is going to be cancer in the locker down the stretch.

  12. AD2K5 says: Sep 27, 2013 9:57 AM

Okay, Greg, no backhanded slaps at the starting QB, please. Ponder is still technically your starter.

  13. jiveturkeygobbler says: Sep 27, 2013 9:58 AM

Why wide receivers continue to sign with teams that don’t have franchise quarterbacks is beyond me. I guess the 100 million dollar plus contracts have something to do with it.

  14. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Sep 27, 2013 9:59 AM

The Vikings have lost 13 of their last 14 night games. The one they did win was on a Tuesday. Maybe they can change the rule to they will always lose at night unless playing on a Tuesday or on foreign soil. I’m not betting on it.

  15. Rick Spielman is a Magician says: Sep 27, 2013 9:59 AM

How long before the Viking fans start chanting for Brady Quinn?

  16. gregm5s7 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:01 AM

GJ Moneychaser has no credibility when it comes to talking about QB’s

  17. summitmech says: Sep 27, 2013 10:03 AM

All this really means is that we are one step closer to starting MCLEOD BETHEL THOMPSON!

  18. ducksk says: Sep 27, 2013 10:05 AM

Queens couldn’t win with Jesus in huddle. Jennings has a big fat mouth. Adrian right on track for 2500. Same old vikes.

  19. newmarketmaulers says: Sep 27, 2013 10:05 AM

This guy seems to have a lot to say.

  20. rg3skinsgetsome says: Sep 27, 2013 10:08 AM

I find it funny that most people on hear are not even skins fans and are running your mouth.. for all u people that are talking smack, ap did not pour it on until after week 6…ever week you can see redskins and rg3 improving, getting better and better and its only time before skins get on win streak… it will be nice to get jarvis jenkins and rob jackson back for cowboys game week 6.. mark that on your calander haters..

  21. hankstramjr says: Sep 27, 2013 10:11 AM

You’re right, Greg. Last year he “commanded” the Chiefs to 2 – 14 season.

  22. britishteeth says: Sep 27, 2013 10:12 AM

Neat. A leader that can lead them to slaughter. Guess that counts for something…

  23. bangreggwilliams says: Sep 27, 2013 10:13 AM

Matt Cassel in huddle: “Listen, we’re going to lose this game, and I will NOT take no for an answer.”

    Now that is commanding.

  24. kgun80 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:17 AM

Not a tough offense to run.. 1st down turn left handoff to Adrian… 2nd down turn right hand the ball to Adrian…3rd down under throw Jennings…. I can’t really say if I think Cassell will be bad or good? In KC Todd Hayley was the coach.. So that can explain a lot of the issues.
If they win Ponder is out of a job.

  25. Kelly's Chronicles says: Sep 27, 2013 10:20 AM

Jennings throws his starting QB under the bus….where have we seen this before LOL!

  26. dsp518 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:24 AM

OK, let me get this right. Wasn’t Ponder Greg’s “golden boy” after he left Green Bay? Didn’t Jennings rave and go on and on about how great this guy is and how he won’t miss Rodgers? Ummm now Ponder’s out and Cassel’s in and Jennings is again raving about a Viking QB and a team that’s 0-3 and going nowhere FAST! I can’t prove this, but I’m guessing good old Greg’s missing Mr. Rodgers just a little bit. I remember my dad telling me “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side” so be careful what you wish for. How’s that deal looking now Greg?

  27. boiler72 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:25 AM

    Aaron Rodgers
    Christian Ponder
    Matt Cassel

Think he can tell the difference yet, lol?

  28. purpleguy says: Sep 27, 2013 10:27 AM

Ponder stinks, but Cassel’s lack of mobility is gonna be a problem with our suddenly leaky O-line. In a week, rubes will be clamoring for McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

  29. greenandgold1972 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:33 AM

I thought that Ponder is the best thing since sliced bread and the one who will get him all the records and accolades. Unlike “12″. Who yes, had a bad game last week, which happens once every 3 years, not the other way around.

  30. dragonfly99 says: Sep 27, 2013 10:43 AM

Watch out Christian. The bus is coming and you’re about to be tossed under it.

  31. skittlesareyum says: Sep 27, 2013 10:46 AM

“That comes with him having much more experience. He’s been in position where he’s had to be a starter for years now. He knows what’s going on. He’s commanding. So is Christian. But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is. Matt’s a very smart guy.”

    ———————

What is he even trying to say here? He says that Cassel is commanding in the huddle, then says Ponder is too. But you don’t bring up command of the huddle for the new QB unless the old one was not good at it.

And then he says “throwing the ball” “is what it is”? Is that a slam on Ponder or something?

  32. doe22us says: Sep 27, 2013 11:00 AM

Hey Ponder, yep that is a huge bus that just trucked you dont look up now.

  33. theoriginalbvan says: Sep 27, 2013 11:00 AM

    Jennings is brain washed!

  34. caseyinkc says: Sep 27, 2013 11:02 AM

“But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is.”

I couldn’t have said it any better myself Greg Jennings… Matt Cassel’s passing? It is what it is… hahaha good luck Vikings… You better hope he looks like he did in 2010, because the last few years have been atrocious.

  35. florioinitalianmeansnonsense says: Sep 27, 2013 11:10 AM

Greg Jennings talks too much. Ponder/Cassel can’t hold Rodger’s jock strap and Jennings realizes now the grass isn’t greener.

  36. 50brady23moss says: Sep 27, 2013 11:11 AM

Cassel gets alot of undeserved hate. His career numbers aren’t that bad, he’s always performed as well as the talent surrounding him. Im interested in seeing what he can do with the Vikes. He doesn’t have to carry the load like in KC, all he has to do is make enough long completions so defenses give AP some breathing room.

  37. greymares says: Sep 27, 2013 11:17 AM

If you have C. Patterson on your fantasy team this is the week to play him.

  38. rtmus53 says: Sep 27, 2013 11:20 AM

Wow! takes a heck of a man to burn a bridge while he is still standing on it.

  39. All-American Voltron says: Sep 27, 2013 11:21 AM

I’m loving 2013 Greg Jennings ungagged. he was very optimistic about Ponder before he got here, but he played preseason and 3 regular season games to understand what Ponder is about. And he knows he’s better off with Cassel. Love that honesty!

  40. shlort says: Sep 27, 2013 11:27 AM

Greg is making the best of a bad situation in Minnesota. He is not a guy who likes running routes and being overthrown and underthrown. He is a WR, and that is probably about par for a WR. You know full well that Greg wishes he was still plaing in GB with a QB that can thread the needle and get him the ball. If nothing else this season, Greg is showing that he has the ability to catch errant passes.

  41. hitmeimopen says: Sep 27, 2013 11:52 AM

    You mean from Errant Rodgers?

That team in KC that didn’t have much talent last year, according to you, seems to be doing fairly well this year. Funny how getting rid of Cassel for someone that doesn’t turn the ball over made such a big difference.

    —————————————————————-

Its a valid point but one with some caveats. Andy Reid is a massive upgrade at coach and has always excelled at getting the most out of his quarterbacks. Im a Vikings fan and Im realistic about this team. We arent making the playoffs but that shouldnt mean that we dont do our best to compete week in and week out. We have seen what Ponder can do and it isnt enough. Cassel gives us a better chance. Hopefully we our in a position to draft a solid QB in the off season and contend next year. I honestly believe that an upgrade at QB makes us a much better team. I think one of the main reasons our offensive line is playing so bad is that they dont believe in Ponder. Why work so hard and give him an extra second or two just so he can deliver a duck down field.

God this offense is so boring to watch and yes we have nothing but envy for Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago. Sucks watching 3 great QBs in your own division and not being able to keep up.

  44. filthymcnasty1 says: Sep 27, 2013 12:55 PM

The incompetent Vikings are making a mockery out of another NFL season.

    They’re really good at losing.

  45. steelerben says: Sep 27, 2013 1:05 PM

@fearadmiral: And even Reid, who is able to polish up some stinkers, moved Cassel as soon as he got there.

If you watched any of the games that Cassel played in KC you would know what I’m talking about. It was painful. He would get to the back of his drop, appear to forget the play, hold the ball until he was sacked or just chuck one up for grabs.

I’m not arguing that Ponder is lights out. He doesn’t drive a ball down field, and has trouble hitting an open guy. But like I’ve said before about Cassel replacing him: be careful what you wish for.

  46. indychiefsfan says: Sep 27, 2013 1:07 PM

Good luck with that Greg….signed a Chiefs fan.

  47. packersarethebest says: Sep 27, 2013 1:08 PM

Gregg, don’t you get that no amount of hyping will make these QBs as good as the Rodgers? How does it feel to have zero for stats? Get used to it, it’s going to be a long season!

  48. realfootballfan says: Sep 27, 2013 2:29 PM

When you’re looking to Matt Cassell to save your season, things aren’t going particularly well.

Hmmm…..Locker Room Schism or Ponder is a Programmatic non fit?

    Discuss amongst yourselves.

  52. whatjusthapped says: Sep 27, 2013 6:05 PM

What is it with Vikings signing FA WR’s who immediately turn into jerks when they set foot on MN soil?

Randy Moss went from being a good soldier in NE to complaining about the catering company. Greg Jennings was mostly well behaved in GB and has been on a constant complaining rant since he got his over inflated contract in MN.

First he tries to insult Rodgers who could care less and now he goes after that Ponder chick for having a noodle arm. I mean its all right for us fans to point out that Ponder throws like a girl but its not cool for Jennings to point it out.
