Greg Jennings: Cassel is “more verbal, kind of commanding in the huddle.”

Matt Cassel is starting at quarterback for the Vikings on Sunday, a move that wasn’t unexpected with Christian Ponder battling a fractured rib.

It’s also a move that the team’s wide receivers are greeting with compliments for the way Cassel leads the offense. Jerome Simpson said, via Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, that the team still loves Ponder, but noted that Cassel had “great composure” and that you “can just tell he has that leader in him.”

Greg Jennings shrugged off concerns about a lack of reps with Cassel and said that this week’s starter was “more verbal” than Ponder and “kind of commanding in the huddle.”

“If anything that’s the difference,” Jennings said, via Brian Murphy of the Pioneer Press. “That comes with him having much more experience. He’s been in position where he’s had to be a starter for years now. He knows what’s going on. He’s commanding. So is Christian. But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is. Matt’s a very smart guy.”

Given the issues on the offensive line and a frequent lack of creativity in the play calling, it’s hard to know how much a commanding voice will change things for the Vikings. Should they win on Sunday, however, Cassel’s going to have a good chance to continue proving that his presence in the huddle was just what the doctor ordered.

  1. Jennings then signed a Vikings helmet “Ponder Sucks, Greg Jennings”.

Does he actually feel that way about Cassel or has he been brainwashed?

Does Greg make it a point to question the leadership of all his QB’s?

    I’m here all night folks…

  2. The only QB who could be successful in this offense is someone like Peyton Manning, only because he would audible out of every play Musgrave sent in.

Any worthwhile change has to start with Wilf firing the entire staff.

  3. That’s not good. Jennings didn’t like Rodgers because he took charge too much and didn’t let Jennings dictate anything. He wanted Ponder to act as his putty. Greg’s sister will not be liking this change!

  4. Sounds like Greg Jennings is taking a few “trying to be subtle” shots at Christian Ponder, and both QB’s such as, “But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is.”

I have a feeling this guy is going to be cancer in the locker down the stretch.

  5. Why wide receivers continue to sign with teams that don’t have franchise quarterbacks is beyond me. I guess the 100 million dollar plus contracts have something to do with it.

  6. The Vikings have lost 13 of their last 14 night games. The one they did win was on a Tuesday. Maybe they can change the rule to they will always lose at night unless playing on a Tuesday or on foreign soil. I’m not betting on it.

  7. I find it funny that most people on hear are not even skins fans and are running your mouth.. for all u people that are talking smack, ap did not pour it on until after week 6…ever week you can see redskins and rg3 improving, getting better and better and its only time before skins get on win streak… it will be nice to get jarvis jenkins and rob jackson back for cowboys game week 6.. mark that on your calander haters..

  8. Not a tough offense to run.. 1st down turn left handoff to Adrian… 2nd down turn right hand the ball to Adrian…3rd down under throw Jennings…. I can’t really say if I think Cassell will be bad or good? In KC Todd Hayley was the coach.. So that can explain a lot of the issues.
If they win Ponder is out of a job.

  9. OK, let me get this right. Wasn’t Ponder Greg’s “golden boy” after he left Green Bay? Didn’t Jennings rave and go on and on about how great this guy is and how he won’t miss Rodgers? Ummm now Ponder’s out and Cassel’s in and Jennings is again raving about a Viking QB and a team that’s 0-3 and going nowhere FAST! I can’t prove this, but I’m guessing good old Greg’s missing Mr. Rodgers just a little bit. I remember my dad telling me “the grass isn’t always greener on the other side” so be careful what you wish for. How’s that deal looking now Greg?

  10. Ponder stinks, but Cassel’s lack of mobility is gonna be a problem with our suddenly leaky O-line. In a week, rubes will be clamoring for McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

  11. I thought that Ponder is the best thing since sliced bread and the one who will get him all the records and accolades. Unlike “12”. Who yes, had a bad game last week, which happens once every 3 years, not the other way around.

  12. “That comes with him having much more experience. He’s been in position where he’s had to be a starter for years now. He knows what’s going on. He’s commanding. So is Christian. But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is. Matt’s a very smart guy.”

What is he even trying to say here? He says that Cassel is commanding in the huddle, then says Ponder is too. But you don’t bring up command of the huddle for the new QB unless the old one was not good at it.

And then he says “throwing the ball” “is what it is”? Is that a slam on Ponder or something?

  13. “But as far as throwing the ball it is what it is.”

I couldn’t have said it any better myself Greg Jennings… Matt Cassel’s passing? It is what it is… hahaha good luck Vikings… You better hope he looks like he did in 2010, because the last few years have been atrocious.

  14. Cassel gets alot of undeserved hate. His career numbers aren’t that bad, he’s always performed as well as the talent surrounding him. Im interested in seeing what he can do with the Vikes. He doesn’t have to carry the load like in KC, all he has to do is make enough long completions so defenses give AP some breathing room.

  15. I’m loving 2013 Greg Jennings ungagged. he was very optimistic about Ponder before he got here, but he played preseason and 3 regular season games to understand what Ponder is about. And he knows he’s better off with Cassel. Love that honesty!

  16. Greg is making the best of a bad situation in Minnesota. He is not a guy who likes running routes and being overthrown and underthrown. He is a WR, and that is probably about par for a WR. You know full well that Greg wishes he was still plaing in GB with a QB that can thread the needle and get him the ball. If nothing else this season, Greg is showing that he has the ability to catch errant passes.

That team in KC that didn’t have much talent last year, according to you, seems to be doing fairly well this year. Funny how getting rid of Cassel for someone that doesn’t turn the ball over made such a big difference.

Its a valid point but one with some caveats. Andy Reid is a massive upgrade at coach and has always excelled at getting the most out of his quarterbacks. Im a Vikings fan and Im realistic about this team. We arent making the playoffs but that shouldnt mean that we dont do our best to compete week in and week out. We have seen what Ponder can do and it isnt enough. Cassel gives us a better chance. Hopefully we our in a position to draft a solid QB in the off season and contend next year. I honestly believe that an upgrade at QB makes us a much better team. I think one of the main reasons our offensive line is playing so bad is that they dont believe in Ponder. Why work so hard and give him an extra second or two just so he can deliver a duck down field.

God this offense is so boring to watch and yes we have nothing but envy for Green Bay, Detroit, and Chicago. Sucks watching 3 great QBs in your own division and not being able to keep up.

  19. @fearadmiral: And even Reid, who is able to polish up some stinkers, moved Cassel as soon as he got there.

If you watched any of the games that Cassel played in KC you would know what I’m talking about. It was painful. He would get to the back of his drop, appear to forget the play, hold the ball until he was sacked or just chuck one up for grabs.

I’m not arguing that Ponder is lights out. He doesn’t drive a ball down field, and has trouble hitting an open guy. But like I’ve said before about Cassel replacing him: be careful what you wish for.

  20. What is it with Vikings signing FA WR’s who immediately turn into jerks when they set foot on MN soil?

Randy Moss went from being a good soldier in NE to complaining about the catering company. Greg Jennings was mostly well behaved in GB and has been on a constant complaining rant since he got his over inflated contract in MN.

First he tries to insult Rodgers who could care less and now he goes after that Ponder chick for having a noodle arm. I mean its all right for us fans to point out that Ponder throws like a girl but its not cool for Jennings to point it out.
