The Patriots have released cornerback/special-teamer Marquice Cole, the club said Friday.

The move opens a spot on the Patriots’ 53-player roster.

Cole played in the Patriots’ first three games but did not record any statistics. The 29-year-old Northwestern product has appeared in 54 combined regular-season games in five seasons for the Jets (2009-2011) and Patriots (2012-2013). According to the Patriots, Cole has notched 43 special-teams tackles and 26 defensive tackles in his NFL career.

The unbeaten Patriots play at 1-2 Atlanta on Sunday night on NBC.

Why would the Patriots sign a wide receiver when they have the great Danny Amendola?

Special teams move. Slater out and Coles has a hammy.

Curious. Slater is also down and I believe Cole has played the role of gunner before.

How would anyone expect a WR from outside of the system to suddenly come in?

Who the hell would be able to instantly come in and pick up a playbook like that, especially at the second most complicated position on the team outside of QB?

When have we ever seen a WR come in as an outsider during the middle of the season? The last one was Jabar Gaffney who had a pathetic season in 2006 and didn’t contribute a damn thing until the postseason.

On top of that they’re getting Amendola back soon, and have Sims on the practice squad, along with Harrison who can come back in 2 weeks from the NFI list. Those guys are way beyond any outsider who would be inactive for quite some time.
