The Patriots have released cornerback/special-teamer Marquice Cole, the club said Friday.

The move opens a spot on the Patriots’ 53-player roster.

Cole played in the Patriots’ first three games but did not record any statistics. The 29-year-old Northwestern product has appeared in 54 combined regular-season games in five seasons for the Jets (2009-2011) and Patriots (2012-2013). According to the Patriots, Cole has notched 43 special-teams tackles and 26 defensive tackles in his NFL career.

The unbeaten Patriots play at 1-2 Atlanta on Sunday night on NBC.
