Ponder is week-to-week with rib injury

Ponder AP

Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder won’t play this week with a rib injury.

Moving forward, it’s unclear when he’ll be ready to go.

Per a league source, the injury (which reportedly entails a fracture) leaves Ponder as a week-to-week proposition.  The Vikings are off next week, which means that he’ll have two weeks to heal.

In the interim, the Vikings have an opportunity to see what Matt Cassel can do.  Though it’s not believed that the Vikings would have been ready to bench Ponder at this point, the injury provides them an excellent chance to see what they are missing by not playing Cassel.

They may not be missing much, based on Cassel’s history.  Though he led the Pats to an 11-5 record (no playoffs) in 2008 after Tom Brady popped an ACL, Cassel was average at best in Kansas City.

I think there is a misspelling in the headline, Ponder is Weak to Weak, ol Mr. Noodle Arm himself.

Maybe its time the Vikings fired up the corporate Jet for a visit to Mississippi. Granted, Chilly wouldn’t be there to put on his knee pads but I think if they beg hard enough, a certain washed up QB could be convinced that he is the shining white knight coming to the rescue.

This is set up so perfectly, it’s impossible to believe that it wasn’t planned. Ponder gets benched without the stigma of being benched. Nobody has to admit a mistake. If Cassel is good, the ribs are still bothering Ponder for the next game. If things keep going well, Cassel stays in because you don’t want to mess with a good thing. If he’s bad, the ribs are fine next game.

Greenbay is 1&2 not much better. They had a chance to win at the end of both their losses and blew their load early. My pornstar girlfriend would be so disappointed if I ended it early… signed a packers fan 9 and 7 at best this year for the pack.

  32. purplengold says: Sep 27, 2013 6:37 PM

The fractured rib could be sent into the heart with sufficient impact.

  33. fluffy19 says: Sep 27, 2013 6:37 PM

    A couple of things:
    1. Ponder didn’t give up 2 game losing touchdowns in the final 3 minutes the last 2 weeks. We’d be praising him if we were 2-1 right now.

    2. The real mistake here (if you don’t think Ponder can be a servicable NFL QB, that is) wasn’t drafting Ponder. Spielman had an opinion and he went with it. Ok. No GM bats 1.000. The real mistake was not getting other good/great QB’s available. (R. Wilson, A. Smith, etc) The stupidest sports maxim ever is that there is such a thing as too many good QB’s on a roster for fear of hurting your “starter’s” confidence. Some would say QB is 90% confidence and competitiveness, so if your QB can’t handle competition w/o losing confidence, that tells you that you’ve chosen poorly.

    3. If the Vikings cut bait with Ponder, he will catch on with another team, and in the right environment with better QB development, he will be a decent-good NFL QB someday.

This is coming from one of the few Vikings fans who still believes in my team and this QB. It’s been a gut wrenching start to the year, but September has made fools of many of us over the years, and something about the first 3 weeks this year gives me the feeling that we’re in for a wackier-than-usual kind of season. We’ll see.

I predicted Ponder would do well this season, based upon his last few games of the 2012 season. I also thought the addition of Jennings was perfect for Ponder. I’m not shedding any tears, but am surprised by his regression.

Of I were Ponder, I’d be practicing hard to nail down the sideline back shoulder throws that Jennings excels at. I wonder if he hasn’t been practicing with the receivers.

No is really talking about how bad the Vikings coaching staff is. Frazier is a poor man’s Tony Dungy. Very conservative and coaches not to lose. He has no business being a head coach anywhere.

Bill Musgrave does not have a feel for calling plays. He is so predictable its terrible. He should have been fired last year for his play-calling.

They also need to stop playing that Cover 2 defense so much. Everyone knows how to beat it…especially your division opponents!

Coaching strategy is as important as good players.
If Vikings lose Frazier and Musgrave should be fired.

If the Browns game showed anything it showed that Ponder isn’t the Vikings biggest problem.

Ponder ran in two scores and had a touchdown toss in right corner of the end zone dropped by Webb.

On his second TD run he took a h*ll of a lick. If he does have a broken rib, that may have been the hit.
Take a look at the Browns game on shortcuts (NFL chan.) you’ll see that Frazier isn’t putting Cassel out there for any other reason than that Ponder is hurt. Ponder may not be the answer for us, but if you watch that Browns game again you’ll that loss shouldn’t be pinned on Ponder. Start with Musgrave AKA Chili II.

Why hasn’t Marcus Sherels been on the field more as a CB, he was tackling like Winfield – that really casts doubts on the coaches

The Vikes picked Ponder because he was smart. They knew he didn’t have the strong arm but they have been a ball control team for 40 years, short dink passes, and once in a while the long ball but mostly short plays using AP and tight ends. Ponder can manage that.

The problem now is image. Minny fans are fickled and if they lose to the Steelers, Ponder would be a liability they can’t explain away. So they say, hey you have a boo boo, sit down rest, lets play Casell let him get beat up and blame him if we lose and save you for another day.

Bottom line the Vikes believe in Ponder and will ride him hoping the defense can also score points.

It seems like only last month that clueless Viking fans were guaranteeing a Superbowl berth with their 3 game changing first round picks thanks to the brilliance of their GM.

The reality is that the incompetent Rick Spieldope has given birth to 0-3 for the second time in 3 years.

NOt only does mr casell get two days of practice, its on jet lag brain, in a strange practice field. Gee we should all expect great things from him. He sucked in pre season but ran the third stringers. He will be even worse against the Steelers.

The Vikes know if they go 0-4 they aren’t done. All they have to do is beat the people in their division. If your 8-8 and they are 7 and somthing, they win.

Only week four and already a throw away game between two garbage teams.

ouch, fractured rib. I wouldn’t think half the packer trolls could type with that type of injury.

    @filthy

I sympathize that you barely had the brain “power” to pass the 9th Grade, and that has left you with a limited 500-word vocabulary.

So, I’m going to do you a big favor. It’s called a Thesaurus. No, it’s not a dinosaur. It’s a book that lists words with similar meanings. So, instead of you having to use words like “hapless” and “tasteless” over and over again ad nauseum, the Thesaurus will enable you to find and use different words (assuming that you are able to read books).

    You’re welcome.

As the late, great Bud Grant once famously said “Viking fans are small people (figuratively, not literally), living small lives, beneath the giant shadow of the Green Bay Packers.

Bud Grant is still alive. How’s Lombardi doing?

What’s great is that you guys get so mad! What a bunch of little girls!

I can assure you that I have one account only, and that with each tear you shed I only get stronger. I’m so strong right now!

I’m better than you now. I’ve always been better than you, and I’ll always be better than you.

(Here’s a hint: it’s a football site. Don’t let it make you cry, Contra)
