Report: Josh Freeman could be the Buccaneers’ third QB on Sunday

One week after starting what could very well be his last game for the Buccaneers, Josh Freeman might not even be the club’s top backup on Sunday against Arizona, according to a published report.

According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers may demote Freeman to the No. 3 quarterback role against the Cardinals. This would leave Dan Orlovsky as the backup to rookie Mike Glennon, who was promoted to the starting lineup on Wednesday.

Freeman told ESPN on Thursday night that he hoped to be traded. According to Stroud, the ESPN interview was “was not authorized by the team.” Freeman didn’t meet with the local media on Wednesday or Thursday after he was benched.

Freeman, 25, has started all but one of the games he has been active for in his NFL career.

Schiano better watch it because if QB’s 1 and 2 don’t pan out, he’s REALLY gonna have a mess on his hands.

    Can we trade the Glazers?

and buccaneers will still be fourth place in the nascar division. SAINTS is still the KINGS baby!!!

  4. bucrightoff says: Sep 27, 2013 11:40 AM

He really cannot be handling this any worse. Alex Smith showed you the blueprint on how to handle this situation.

Of course I can understand why he’s so mad. He’s probably lost at least $50 million in potential contract money from the 6-4 start last year to now. He also lost the locker room to a rookie. But hey he’s still got that set of “Thriller” pics he made.

Screwing over your whole team to spite a player is always a great plan!! Seriously though, Dan Orlovsky? The dude ran out of the back of the endzone and didn’t even know it when he played for the Lions.

Freeman acts like a brat with an “entitlement” attitude. No team in their right mind would trade for this untalented cancer.
I thought TB made a mistake when they drafted him, and it turns out that I was right.

  10. Rich Tandler says: Sep 27, 2013 11:50 AM

There is no longer a third QB rule. Either Freeman can be active and enter the game at any time or inactive and not be able to enter the game under any circumstances.

  11. donstylo says: Sep 27, 2013 11:51 AM

I’m just holding out hope that Schiano’s going to be asked a question that’ll send him off on a “they are who we thought they were” type of post-game press conference rant, to hasten HIS departure from the bay area. C’mon Bucs reporters! Step up your game!

  12. kylexitron says: Sep 27, 2013 11:52 AM

Am I the only one who thinks Schiano’s amateur hour coaching style is probably the bigger problem with the Bucs than Freeman is?

Someone in need of a QB will pick freeman up and he’ll go on to have a decent career.

  13. raiderufan says: Sep 27, 2013 11:57 AM

That 3rd QB rule got changed 2 years ago when they expanded from 45 to 46 active players.

It turns into a daycare, you could get away with murder as a player on a Raheem coached team.

  23. blacknole08 says: Sep 27, 2013 12:07 PM

  24. philyeagles5 says: Sep 27, 2013 12:10 PM

That’s usually how it works. Why risk glennon getting hurt, then freeman goes in there and lights it up randomly. Schiano would be screwed, in his eyes anyway.

But they did have a good year with Morris as coach. Once Schiano produces one then you can brag about the great discipline but until then he looks like a petty tyrant who’ll screw the whole team over to get back at a single player.

    ________________________________

You’re right. If anything Smith had a much better reason to be angry. He lost his job to injury; at the time he was leading the NFL in passer rating.

Freeman meanwhile is on a spectacular run in his last 6 games of 4 TDs and 16 turnovers. He’s more than earned his benching, unlike Smith. And yet Smith took it better.

  32. h8glazersgobucs says: Sep 27, 2013 12:27 PM

Alex smith good. Kaepernick better. Harborough good. Freeman bad. Backups on Bucs worse. Schiano disaster.

  33. mshawn75 says: Sep 27, 2013 12:28 PM

All the media wants to talk about is his 10-6 season in 2010. The teams he beat had a combined record of 55-105. The only team he beat with a winning record was N.O. (11-5) the final game of the year. The days of the “5 year plan” for coaches is long gone, that goes for QBs to make the playoffs too.

Come on. He didn’t “lose the locker room.”

His coach benched him because he’s been dying to bench him from the beginning.

    This is all about Schiano.

LQQks like Schiano is also suffering from “Saban Syndrome.” Like Nick, he will find that bullying grown millionaires is not quite so productive as college kids. I put the over/under for Schiano scurrying back to the NCAA with his tail between his legs at 21 more games.

  37. koolaidcircusbeast says: Sep 27, 2013 12:34 PM

How is a coach at fault for benching a spoiled brat like Freeman.

31 others starting quarterbacks in the league are the hardest working player on their respected team. Josh Freeman can’t even earn the respect of teammates.

    He’s finished. And deservingly so.

and yet here you are posting on a website on friday afternoon. But seriously, thanks for the update on your GM skills. ANd you are wrong, no team will trade for him on one account. Schiano misplayed this so poorly that under no circumstance can Freeman be back next year. That means he will be cut, which means he will cost nothing to obtain his services..But you already knew that, being the 33rd GM in the NFL.

You got to be kidding me.. Raheem Morris won 10 games with guys that are working a 7-11 right now. Coach Greg “toes on the line” can’t win anything with pro bowlers. The bucs gave the wrong coach the right players. # team freeman.

  45. blacknole08 says: Sep 27, 2013 12:57 PM

The difference between Alex Smith and Freeman is that Smith is a team player. He lost his job NUMEROUS times to guys like J.T. O’Sullivan, Shaun Hill and Trent Dilfer lol.

He also went through multiple off. coordinators on a yearly basis. But he never complained at least publicly, even when he lost his job to Kaep, almost lead his team to a SB in 2011, and even though he was having the best year of his career last year.

  46. granadafan says: Sep 27, 2013 1:09 PM

Freeman is the reincarnation of Ryan Leaf and Jamarcus Russell.

  47. bitw44 says: Sep 27, 2013 1:11 PM

Once it has been properly fitted you have to wear the same bag that you’ve been wearing all season.

  52. tommyribs says: Sep 27, 2013 1:24 PM

This is not how you treat players.

Sure Freeman has not acted as he should, but you need to treat players better than this, or no one will want to play for you.

Glennon better set the world on fire, or this is going to blow-up big time on Schiano, and on Mike Sullivan, who is highly thought of.

  54. james1755 says: Sep 27, 2013 1:53 PM

Freeman earned bench, clipboard, and ball cap. If anyone reads media outside Tampa, no team wants him, and no team views him as a starter. He is Vince Young, Matt Liehnart revisited. Sanchez and Freeman will be competing for back up jobs next year. He needs to own his limitations and stop giving the other 31 teams more reasons to not answer his agents phone calls. Why is it Schiano’s fault Freeman doesn’t see the field well and can’t read defenses?

  55. beachsidejames says: Sep 27, 2013 2:01 PM

Coach may very well be a jerk I’m not sure about that. One thing for sure is its been Freeman’s chance to lead by example and he couldn’t even show up for the team photo. Not good.

  56. Wisconsin77 says: Sep 27, 2013 2:08 PM

    @bucrightoff

Exactly, that was my point. Alex Smith had a right to complain. That’s why it was a bad comparison.

I don’t have an issue with Freeman coming out and saying a trade might be the best option. But I do have a problem with him saying I am going to do whats best for me but nothing about doing what is best for his team and teammates. No wonder they voted him out as captain…
