Fans give touchdown ball back to Robert Meachem

When Saints receiver Robert Meachem scored the first touchdown of his second stint in New Orleans on Sunday, he did what he often did during his first stint in New Orleans: He flipped the ball into the stands and let a fan have it as a souvenir.

But once Meachem stopped to think about the journey that took him back to New Orleans after a tough season in San Diego last year, it dawned on him that there was a lot of sentimental value to that ball.

“I was kind of mad at myself,” Meachem told the Baton Rouge Advocate. “That ball meant a lot to me, but some fan got it.”

Meachem may have been mad at himself, but this story has a happy ending: The group of fans who took home that ball heard about Meachem’s comments and contacted the Saints to offer Meachem the ball back. The Saints confirmed today that the fans came to the facility, where Meachem gave them all autographed footballs, and they gave Meachem the touchdown ball back.

That seems like a fair trade. But perhaps Meachem can score a touchdown on Monday night and give that ball to the same fan.

That would actually be pretty cool

It took some time to find where Bruno had dropped it in the park after he finished chewing on it. Luckily there was a trail of torn bits of leather and lace to follow.

It would be even cooler if the Phins shut ‘em OUT!

What would be cool is if the Dolphins shutout the Saints like 28-0! Now that would be cool!

^For real guys, wouldn’t it he cool if the Dolphins won the superbowl this year too? Too bad that won’t happen either..

Fins fans: slow down guys. You’re going to be 3-1. That’s nothing to be ashamed of…

Wow I wouldn’t give the ball back after those comments! Referring to them as “some fan”. If it meant so much to you then you wouldn’t have had to think twice about it.

As a Panthers fan, I’m supposed to say something snarky here. I can’t though, this is too cool. Rock on Mr Meachem, rock on.

Using Meachem as evidence, one might think that every receiver in the NFL would be more productive if it was Drew Brees throwing them the ball.

  14. mrlaloosh says: Sep 28, 2013 4:39 PM

Once again, thanks San Diego! Brees, Sproles and now Meachem back. You guys are too generous.

  15. saints4life57 says: Sep 28, 2013 4:44 PM

Ummm yeah Fin’s fans need to calm down a little bit! You guys are 3-0 not 10-0 or 14-0! I think you have a good team but come on you honestly think your going to come into the Superdome and take out Brees and the rest of the Who Dat nation? You guys should be happy if you don’t loose by more than 2 TD’s!

I wonder if they were autographed by him.

I can totally see a fan asking for a drew brees signed ball instead

    Nice job Saints fans!

A little kindness goes a long way. Meachem gets his keepsake, the fans get to spend quality time with their celebrity, and they all get their own keepsakes instead of sharing the one. Win-Win.

Hey, I have another good word for Eagles fans to spell: S-A-N-T-A.

By the way, how’s that new space age offense working out for you? Can’t wait to see how well the players do with it 5,280 above sea level.

  25. tahnoonzee says: Sep 28, 2013 8:53 PM

he stole money from San Diego and now stole the ball back from a fan.

    Classless

  26. perkmg says: Sep 28, 2013 10:53 PM

    tahnoonzee…You are correct Sir!!

  27. ivanpavlov0000 says: Sep 29, 2013 3:09 AM

This is cool. It’s nice to see fans behaving like real fans who love their team. And it’s great to have a player reciprocate the love.
