Nick Fairley: Lions can hit Cutler, get him off his game

Nick Fairley AP

Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley says the game plan on Sunday is simple: Hit Jay Cutler early and often.

Obviously, every defensive lineman wants to hit every quarterback every week. But Fairley sounds particularly eager about what the Lions can do to Cutler in Sunday’s machup of the first- and second-place teams in the NFC North.

“That’s every week,” Fairley told the Detroit News. “Any quarterback we play, that’s our goal, to hit him early and try to get him off his game. We’ve got a good game plan coming into this one. I think we’re going to be able to do that early.”

Cutler has been sacked just three times in three games this season, putting him on pace for by far the fewest sacks he’s had in any of his seasons in Chicago. Fairley says Cutler is doing a good job of getting his passes off quickly, but the Lions still think they’ll have opportunities to hit him.

“We know coming into this game that they’ll be three steps and getting the ball out real quick,” Fairley said. “As a defensive line, we can’t get down on ourselves. Just continue to rush real hard knowing the one time he holds that ball is the one time we are going to get there and take him down.”

Taking Cutler down is the Lions’ best chance of improving to 3-1 and joining the Bears atop the division.

He looks sleepy. Maybe a little hungry.

I see Cutler getting hit a lot. This will be a good match up since the Lions D-line is better, and the Bears o-line is better. The same goes the other way. The Lions O-line is better, but the Bears D-line don’t seem to be as good as it once was. That may be the difference in the game. As a Lions fan lets hope so.

Hit him hard. Hit him often.

I am a Lions fan but is there a defensive line in the NFL that talks as much as ours?

  5. hyzers says: Sep 28, 2013 6:48 PM

“(Chicago has) got some good D-tackles, but they aren’t Detroit up front,” Adrian Peterson said.

AP said this before they faced Chicago.

  6. hyzers says: Sep 28, 2013 6:50 PM

Just don’t shove him too hard when he’s running with the ball. Last time Suh did that he knocked Cutler’s chin off and got a 15 yard penalty for hitting him too hard.

And before he barely got his 100 yards in a game the Vikings lost. What’s your point?

  9. chi01town says: Sep 28, 2013 7:06 PM

If thats the game plan to hit Cutler alot thats funny cause Cutler wont have the ball ask the Bengals. 15 yard penalty is what will happen. and Cutler will look like Montana again this week 37-10 Chicago 4-0

  10. larryboodry says: Sep 28, 2013 7:07 PM

So what was their game plan in Cutler’s other starts against Detroit?

    7-2 record (7-1 with the Bears)…12 TDs, 1 INT…100.2 QB rating.

    Nah…No domination there.

  11. hyzers says: Sep 28, 2013 7:07 PM

That Adrian Peterson thinks the Lions are better up front on defense. Maybe try reading it slower next time?

  12. mialto says: Sep 28, 2013 7:11 PM

    Fact: Lions 2-1
    Fact: Bears 3-0

Looks like Lions are sitting right below the Bears where they belong, bottom of the NFC North. BTW Lions fans I feel bad for ya’ll. Your Players & HC do put ya’ll in a tough spot. It’s got to be rough to be a Lions fan.

  13. lionboy23 says: Sep 28, 2013 7:18 PM

And by the way, Peterson didn’t get 100 yards against the Lions on the ground. He had 93.

  14. hatesycophants says: Sep 28, 2013 7:18 PM

Ahhh! That’s pretty funny. They are better up front on D.

    Go Lions!

  15. thestrategyexpert says: Sep 28, 2013 7:21 PM

Sounds like a great gameplan and goal, but you’re not going to beat Cutler on toughness or with pain. But yeah I have no problem with making this a game where all that is talked about is how impressive Cutler can take a beating.

  16. realitycheckbaby says: Sep 28, 2013 7:30 PM

If Cutler wasn’t so fat, he wouldn’t be such an inviting target.

  17. chi01town says: Sep 28, 2013 7:33 PM

The game is tomorrow so these Lions fans only have a few hours left to lie to them self and think they can win this game. ITS ALL ABOUT TO COME CRASHING DOWN ON THEM. 4-0 Chicago

Was that before or after he ran through them for a 80 yards on the first play of the game?

  19. blackandbluedivision says: Sep 28, 2013 7:39 PM

This is how it should be. The black and blue division down to the Bears and Lions.

  20. richardmb52 says: Sep 28, 2013 7:41 PM

Everyone talks about Cutler getting hit, seems to me the Bears hit Detroits Qback altot more than Cutler gets hit. could be wrong but that’s the way i rember it.

“That Adrian Peterson thinks the Lions are better up front on defense. Maybe try reading it slower next time?”

I understood his point, just not why you feel I should care what AP thinks of the various D-lines he faces.

I believe the Bears have more total talent and better coaching than the Lions, but that’s an opinion you are sure to disagree with. Oh, well.

Is it just me or does Marc Trestman look like inspector Gadget?

  26. rockbottom37 says: Sep 28, 2013 7:51 PM

Marc Trestman= Beginners Luck…zero = number of coaches to come from CFL and succeed in NFL! Bears played the weak opponents in the first 3 weeks of season with exception of the Bengals who basically gave them the game…I gotta feeling they will wish they had Lovie Smith back by week 17

Not a single part of your post is right. It’s almost impressive. The Bengals just beat the Packers and are probably winning the AFC North or at least grabbing a wild card, and were a playoff team last year. Bud Grant and Marv Levy were both CFL coaches before coming into the NFL. And we don’t want Lovie back. We actually like seeing our offense look competent and not forcing Jay to run for his life every passing down.

  29. rockbottom37 says: Sep 28, 2013 8:18 PM

Trestman was coach of lions QBs in 1998 and got fired …guy is terrible coach

  30. respectgsh says: Sep 28, 2013 8:21 PM

Well the post above just about says it all. Except that Lions fans should just never talk smack. The Pistons and Tigers have been good the Red Wings are almost always good but the Lions… seriously they are never good for more than one season every 5-10 years and they have not won championship in anyone’s lifetime. Simmer down now.

  31. respectgsh says: Sep 28, 2013 8:22 PM

The Lions are a terrible organization.

LOL, you didn’t even get the year right, and you were wrong. He left, because he was PROMOTED after having a good year and went on to have success with the Cards.

“Trestman joined the Detroit Lions as quarterbacks coach in 1997. That year Lions quarterback Scott Mitchell passed for 3,484 yards, fourth most in team history.
In 1998 he was with the Arizona Cardinals as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. That year quarterback Jake Plummer threw for 3,737 yards, and the Cardinals made the playoffs for the first time since 1982 and won their first post season game in 51 years.”

Last think I’m gonna say till after the game …Love how when Bears fans take a shot at the Lions the always bring up what they did last 20 years…quit talking like this is the Lions of the early 2000s …shows ignorance of Bears fans …we don’t talk about how the year before last Lions went 10-6 and made the playoffs and how Bears finished 8-8 and were sitting at home in January.

  36. philtration says: Sep 28, 2013 8:57 PM

    Cutler has owned the Lions.
As a matter of fact the Bears have owned the Lions for yeas and have beaten them 9 of the last 10 meetings and are 17-6 against them over the last 10 years.

What are the Lions players or fans running their mouth about?

  37. dino2997 says: Sep 28, 2013 9:04 PM

Lions defensive line talks a lot. Produces nothing and then subsequently loses the game. Fact is Cutler and the Bears have owned Stafford and the Lions. Just shut and try to win for a change.

Geez man, again! Do you not have Google? The Bears were 10-6 and missed the playoffs via tiebreaker last year.

I also fail to see how Fairley is saying anything out of the ordinary here. Isn’t the point for most defensive linemen playing against a good QB to hit him? He’d say the same thing against Manning or anyone else that can toss a forward pass. I would hope that our boys on the d-line think the exact same thing about Stafford. Do you expect them to say that they think that they’re going to get blocked all day and hope the QB has enough time to order a pizza?

Stafford 1-23 vs teams with winning records and the Lions are favored this weekend. These are the times I’m glad I live in Vegas.

you nfc north goobers are unbelievable. if i am not mistaken, cutler has made playoffs once. in that yr in nfc champ gm vs GB he got hurt and didn’t play 2nd half. seems many other yrs he has been in chic he got hurt late in season and bears tanked. it isn’t end of sept yet. let’s see what cutler is doing around t-giving. word around the league is cutler is a coach killer, until proven otherwise.

  44. dfeltz says: Sep 28, 2013 10:48 PM

rockbottom37 – You need to stop posting. You claim the Bears have played weak opponents the first 3 weeks, lets recap what the Lions have done:
    Week 1 Minnesota (0-3)
Week 2 Arizona (1-2 – only win vs Detroit)
    Week 3 Redskins (0-3)

    Take this as an education.

  45. rockbottom37 says: Sep 29, 2013 12:38 AM

Ok bears fans …Cutler will be yelling at his OL all day 2 mrw..when he is on his back most of the day

  46. funktron2x says: Sep 29, 2013 2:08 AM

Lions fans actually got to watch their team in the playoffs more recently than Bears fans did. But yeah, before that, garbage bags, too.
