Goldson delivers another illegal hit

Bucs safety Dashon Goldson will be making another contribution to the Human Fund.

Two weeks ago, Goldson was suspended by the NFL after his latest illegal hit on a defenseless receiver.  Matt Birk overturned the suspension on appeal, but imposed a $100,000 fine.  Coupled with a $30,000 fine from Week One, Goldson had lost half a game check in the first two weeks of action.

Now, he could be losing an entire game check.

Goldson delivered another illegal hit in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

Though the Cardinals already were in field-goal range after receiver Jaron Brown caught the ball at the Tampa 19, the hit moved Arizona to the Tampa nine.

Goldson has a clear strategic reason to disregard player safety.  If Goldson had dislodged the ball, the Cardinals would have still been at the Tampa 38, and on the fringes of field-goal range.

But Goldson wasn’t able to break up the catch, or to avoid the flag.

At a minimum, he won’t avoid the fine.  If the league is willing to risk having a suspension overturned again, don’t be surprised if the NFL takes another shot at suspending a guy who keeps taking illegal shots at opposing players.

  1. I have no idea how a team is supposed to play defense anymore. Goldson didn’t deliver a helmet-to-helmet hit on the play and it’s pretty difficult to dislodge the ball if you can’t even touch the guy in control of it, which seems to be what the NFL wants.

The NFL has become such a joke.

  2. It shouldn’t have come done to that play in the first place!! I blame Greg Schiano for putting them in this position for the 3rd time this season by playing not to lose and not to win when they were up 10-0 and the defense was playing so great!!! What will it take for this ownership to Fire Schiano???

  3. It’s all fun and games until he ends someones career and possibly life. Maybe then something will be done about this rather than just slapping a multi-millionare on the wrist with some chump change (to him) fine.

  4. “Illegal Hit”???? Give me a freakin break…. If you saw the play at all… The receiver was leaping up in the air and on his way down Goldston hit him… SHOULDER PAD FIRST… IN the UPPER CHEST… NOT THE HEAD….

  5. He will be suspended two games though. Regardless of the hit. His one in the Saints game and one of his two in the Jets game were very questionable. Sucks it is the National Flag Football League now. I agree with the other poster–in 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, Goldson would of been the man!

  6. Nothing wrong with the hit…it was a joke of a call and the Ref should be fired along with Schiano …..

Lol @ all the people commenting without even seeing the ” hit” …..lol

  7. I’m a Cards fan and I thought it was a perfectly clean hit. Yeremiah Bell got flagged for an identical hit earlier in the game. These rules are killing pro football.

  8. The dumpster fire continues in Tampa. 0 + 4, close the door. Thank god Miami isn’t embarrassing the state of Florida like Jacksonville & Tampa.

  9. In my mind, the question isn’t so much whether the “league is willing to risk having a suspension overturned again,” but whether the appeals hearing officer will risk overturning another suspension knowing that a fine—however large—may have failed to deter Goldson.

  10. I saw the play and I wondered why the NFL changed rule about forcing receivers out of bounds if they throw a flag when a player is attempting to force a receiver out of bounds? This crap is very confusing anymore. It looked like a good, clean hit…..much like Bell’s earlier in the game.

  11. Do any of Glee viewers actually watch the game or do you just gossip about it on this message board? The hit was a clean hit in any day or age except for the current Panties Era the league is plagued by. He was trying to knock the ball loose, period. There was nothing dirty about the play, John Lynch made that play 500 times in his career. It’s ridiculous that they still call this crap on the field football.

  12. People, please at least watch a play before making your holier than thou comments. He hit the receiver in the chest with his shoulder. It wasnt helmet to helmet. Every DB in the league should demand that the NFL explain what was wrong with the hit.

  13. Both this call and the call on Bell earlier were terrible. Neither were helmet to helmet. The official when explaining the flag said something like “defender didn’t allow the receiver to become a runner”. What?!?!?!??!??! What is he supposed to do?!?!?!? It was a text book CLEAN hit and both of the receivers legs had come down to the ground!!!

  14. Anybody catch the ref’s explanation? “making contact before the receiver could re-establish himself as a runner”. What else do we need to do, high five him for a good catch and give him a 3 second head start?

I disagree with you Greg. He faked a punt deep in his own territory in the 4th quarter with like 9 minutes to go. What killed him was Glennon throwing the ball on 2 and 6 in their own territory when they could have easily taken a chunk of time off the clock and forced the Cards to drive a long field for a td which they hadn’t done all day. If anything he got too aggressive.

  16. As a eagles fan I’m watchin Payton kill us and I’m thinking we should trade for this dirty player or not (which he isn’t) Im so tried of this soft D we need some killers out there lol

I was all over this guy for the helmet to helmet hits, but this was a clean hit- shoulder to chest.

  18. As a Seahawks fan and a Legion Of Boom appreciator, I can respect Goldson’s play. This play was a clean hit, though. Refs got it wrong.

  19. If this was Suh I doubt we’d be making LOL Seinfeld references.

This guy is making possibly career and life-ending hits. Be serious for a second and demand him to be suspended.

  20. That hit was not illegal. (At least it shouldn’t be) It was late in the game on a sideline throw to gimme field goal range. He was trying to do 2 things that would help his team. Dislodge the ball and/or knock the receiver out of bounds before both feet landed. It was a clean hit with the shoulder and not on the receiver’s head. The “defenseless receiver” stuff is one of the most ridiculous things the NFL has done.

There is not a single fan/player/team executive that would say that a defender should allow the receiver to make the catch, wait for eye contact and a nod from the receiver, and then attempt to gently tackle the receiver–yet, that is basically what the NFL and the officials expect.

This game is not the same anymore. What the NFL has done/is doing is the equivalent of NASCAR making its sport safer by lowering the maximum speed to 55mph.

Make the game safe but do not invent a new game doing it.

  21. was at the game. shoulder. to. chest. terrible call. just like the cumberland call week 1. NFL has is it out for dashon because he plays safety the right wag which is now against NFL rules I guess. SAD.

  22. He was flagged for forcing the receiver out of bounds. There was no helmet to helmet. Put your glasses on and don’t jump to conclusions because it’s Goldson.

  23. If the NFL wants to ban these hits, they will encourage more passing.

Passing plays are way, way more dangerous than rushing plays. Ironically, these rules are creating more injuries by encouraging more (dangerous plays) passing.

  24. If that hit is considered illegal, then i am off to hockey. This game is turning into nothing more than flag football.

  25. Was watching the game. Refs call was “defender hit the receiver before he had a chance to establish himself as a runner.” What?!?!?

So you cannot hit a receiver coming down with the ball? You have to let him catch it then make a play? That’s absurd. So then you can no longer push a receiver out of bounds before he gets his feet down?

Also, when did it become the league rule to levy a fine for every personal foul. When are they going to start fining the whole offense for delay of game?

  26. The refs are probably just waiting to throw out a flag on Dashon , They’re sissifying the game so much a hit like this would’ve been perfectly legal a year ago! I hate to see a beast like him contained – just have to be extra careful & get under the radar
