The Lions have struggled in recent years to keep their secondary healthy. So today’s news isn’t good.
Rashean Mathis, the veteran cornerback who signed with the Lions in mid-August and has played well early in the season, left today’s game with a head injury.
Detroit announced that Mathis would be re-evaluated at halftime.
Rookie Darius Slay is filling in for Mathis, and so far the Lions haven’t missed a beat on defense: On Slay’s first play, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler threw in his direction, but Lions safety Louis Delmas wisely recognized that Cutler would pick on the rookie, broke on the ball and intercepted it.
Lions safety Glover Quin added another interception of Cutler, returning it deep into Chicago territory, and Matthew Stafford hit Calvin Johnson in the end zone on the next play to give the Lions a 23-10 lead.
