Philip Rivers leads Chargers back for 30-21 win

AP

A month into the season, a 2-2 record can mean a lot of things.

For the Cowboys, it’s a disappointment, as they gave away a chance to pull two games clear of their division. For the Chargers, it was a step forward, and marked another sign that Philip Rivers is back.

The Chargers quarterback was 35-of-42 passing for 401 yards and three touchdowns in a 30-21 win over the Cowboys, which moved both teams to .500.

Rivers looks energized under new coach Mike McCoy (along with offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt and quarterbacks coach Frank Reich), and has

The Cowboys went up 21-10 in the second quarter when linebacker Sean Lee took an interception back for a score.

But Rivers led his team back for 20 unanswered points, hitting Antonio Gates in stride for a fourth-quarter touchdown to put his team up two scores.

Tony Romo answered with an impressive drive, but Terrance Williams fumbled at the 1-yard line going in, trying to stretch the ball over the plane when he appeared well short.

The Chargers did it all with a makeshift line (three starters inactive) and they lost pass-rusher Dwight Freeney to a quad injury in the second quarter, and he did not return. But having Rivers back at a level he hasn’t played at in recent years gives them a chance.

  1. Oh Dallas. Enjoy your division lead. It’s over after the bye. Here comes God’s Team! The Redskins as usual, the pride of the division. Only team who’s going to win today. If it weren’t for the Burgundy and Gold, the NFC East would be a disgrace! #GodBlesstheRedskins

  2. Man if only the AFC west wasn’t so damn stacked. Feels funny even thinking that after the last 5-6 years of being 1 of the worst divisions in football. Oh well, at least SD is keeping it exciting!!!

  3. AFC West is shaping up to have some good division games coming up with Denver, KC and SD all playing pretty well.

  4. Knowing the Cowboys they will somehow find a way to pull a win against the Broncos out of nowhere and then promptly lose to the Redskins on their way to another 8-8 season. Just such an inconsistent team week in and week out. Fortunately this division is so terrible 8-8 might get us the division crown. Unfortunately that spells another 1st round exit in the playoffs.

  5. Rivers….Tore it up despite his #1 WR hurt and inactive and down three starting linemen. The NFC East looks awful.

  6. As a Cowboys fan I considered this a must win game. Going against Denver next week scares me, hence the Cowboys needing to win this game. If the Cowboys pass defense allowed that many yards to Rivers, lord knows how many Peyton is going to light up.

Par for the Cowboys thus far, win a good game, lose to crap teams, squeak by the W, pummel the abysmal Rams in a great team effort, give the game up. Totally unsurprising.

Question: how is it that Bruce Carter was the one covering Danny Woodhead only for Wooodhead to get two touchdowns…that was embarrassing. But like I said, I am not surprised or shocked being a Cowboys fan.

  7. logicalvoice there you are I thought you said you were done well anyway dont count my eagles out just yet love rg3 but vick will always be the original

  8. Good win Chargers! Still work to do, but better than Acee gives credit for… I guess I am an optimist lol:) I think Chargers are a dangerous team that are back on track. & that’s all that could be asked for…

  9. I agree with Jerry Jones. No way the Cowboys should’ve been favored over the Chargers. Hope Jerry took the points with the Chargers.

  10. I hand it to the Chargers, didn’t expect Woodhead and Gates to be so hot; Cowboys didn’t have a consistent answer for them; Demarcus Ware was shut down entire game, however they did it, it was done very well; gonna shake this one off and get ready for the high octane team next Sunday; what a pain for the Cowboys; atleast it’s a HOME!

  11. As terrible as the Giants are, they are still in the hunt at 0-4, lol. NFC East and the Cowboys are pathetic. Good luck going against Manning next week!

Stat of the day from this game:

Rivers : Only QB in NFL history to throw for over 400 yards and have a completion percentage of 83.3%

Well, you will always have that. Nobody honks regular season stats like a Charger fan.

  13. What a great game plan for the season…
AND YES, just keep it up Cowboys….

In key situations, just run the ball more.. and keep throwing those checkdown passes to Witten…

And using this plan as designed by Callahan, Romo, and Jerry, the Cowboys will end up with more rushing yards than last season…

And Romo will throw for a career low number of interceptions….

And the Cowboys will end up with 6 wins….

    Nice work, I must say….

  14. Rivers has been forgotten in recent years. His surrounding teammates have either changed via transactions or injuries throughout his career, but the QB he faced today always needs Witten, elite WRs, and a healthy tailback.

You’re better when you play with less.

    Romo = overrated.

  15. Hey never logical: beating the Raiders is NOTHING! Silence from you until your team actually does something.

  16. Rivers 6-0 vs NFC east as a starter. Too bad SD only gets them every 4 years. Hey I’ll take it. Good job ⚡️⚡️. Oh yea it’s raider week!! Thank god football is back!!

  17. Whether you’re a Chargers’ fan, or not, you need to appreciate how well the new coaching staff is working out for that team. Rivers looks amazing, and is playing behind yet another piecemeal offensive line, throwing to his third and forth-string wide-outs. Yet, has a nearly league-high completion percentage.

Those guys have figured out how to keep the guy high and dry, in the pocket.

  18. The reality is that PFT does not know the most scientific evidence regarding concussions . I am sick & tired of a media outlet claiming anything beyond a basic understanding of a medical issue that affects people, not just millionaire players!

    Take that, Vegas.

Vegas and betting are for chumps who havent played sports at a high level..Any given Sunday.. On that day its me against you and not what some schmuck in some corner is drawing betting lines…

PS- unless u take the spread against the Jags

  20. Perhaps Florio can summarize to us what a concussion is & how to properly manage? I am curious what a lawyer might say to a problem he has no training in.

  21. I love when people say Romo is over rated and is an under achiever. How can an undrafted free agent be an under achiever? How is he over rated? He was undrafted!!

  22. Content that Chargers are playing better, but it hurts to think SD could easily be 4-0. They lost by a FG to HOU, and then last week’s awful defending to lose on that last minute TD. Oh well. At least I know the organization is heading in the right direction. They need to acquire another playmaker on either side of the ball, though if I had to choose, I’d go with a stud CB, or if that isn’t possible, a top SS to accompany Weddle. The WR’s are fine IMO, with Brown and Allen only growing, with Royal too still being young. Adding oLine will only help Rivers too.

  23. “Well, you will always have that. Nobody honks regular season stats like a Charger fan.”

LMAO. Yeah, nobody except for the Romo apologists.

  24. Difference between Eli and Phyllis?

2 rings and 2 SB MVPs

Get back to me when Phyllis does something – anything – significant. You know, like win a Super Bowl. In other words, never get back to me because that’s never happening.

Eli is polishing his rings right now as we speak. Making sure those things are always looking as shiny as possible.

Let Phyllis and his nutjob fans celebrate a 2-2 regular season record that will lead to nothing by season’s end.

Eli > Phyllis forever and always. Get that through your heads.

Spoken like the fan of team that has ZERO post season stats to speak of for over a decade.

  26. This week the chargers are going to the Super Bowl even though its I. Late January. Choker fans take a game at a time. You also beat a sorry Dallas team. But you get your imaginary ring
