Tom Coughlin: Play calling is like throwing a dart at a board

AP

The Giants lost by another lopsided score in Kansas City on Sunday, falling to 0-4 for the first time since 1987 and leaving the team searching for answers about how they can avoid 12 more pastings the rest of the way.

Coach Tom Coughlin is starting with the offense. Although the whole second half, which saw the Giants give up 21 straight points to make a close game into a laugher, was a “debacle,” the coach was most upset with that unit.

“There’s no continuity whatsover. There’s no rhythm. There’s a play here and a play there,” Coughlin said in his postgame press conference. “We don’t make any first downs. Play calling is like throwing a dart at a board. There’s no real feel for the ball moving continuously down the field.”

Coughlin made it clear that he was not criticizing the play calling, but the inconsistency of the offensive performance. Still, the Giants offense has now scored seven points over the last eight quarters, a shocking bout of ineffectiveness for a unit that has a lot of talented players even with the offensive line in shambles. There clearly aren’t any easy or obvious solutions, but the Giants have to figure something out because this group of players shouldn’t be playing this badly for four straight weeks.

  1. Giants LOL. The Redskins as usual, the pride of the division. Only team who’s going to win today. If it weren’t for the Burgundy and Gold, the NFC East would be a disgrace! #GodBlesstheRedskins

  2. The giants only need to figure out one thing…..how many losses will it take to ensure securing the #1 pick next april. We either get the best defensive player to come out of college in a very long time….or we turn that pick into a gold mine of draft picks. As a Giants fan, id opt for the latter. Lets go Jags!!

  3. Hey, remember when those tools in the Media kept saying Tom Coughlin is a Hall of Fame Head Coach? Hilarious! This bitter old man doesn’t have a clue. Loving this, keep it up Giants!

  4. The bullseye on said dart board is “3rd and long shotgun draw” Killdrive always manages to get THAT one

Dude, you’re posting like this is 1991. If it weren’t for teams like the browns, the skins might be the biggest NFL disaster of the last 20 years.

Leave it to the skins to pick a QB #2 overall who probably wont even be in this league long enough to see his rookie contract expire. Sad.

  6. Don’t worry Giants fans you get to play the Eagles’ pathetic defense next week, a date with the Eagles is the perfect remedy for any and all offensive ineptitude.

  7. In the NFL you get punished for success. Two Superbowls means a lot of years in lousy draft position. Parity. Enjoy it.

  8. Ive seen the eagles….as bad as they and the skins are, im pretty sure my Giants are even worse. Lousy o-line + immobile QB = recipe for disaster.

I posted the same basic thing on another story about the Giants….very true. The steelers are going through the same thing.

  10. Here are the five plays !

    Cruz go long
    Jacobs go sideways
    Handoff to Wilson
    Nicks go to the sideline
    Draw to D Scott

This is why the Belichick haters look like fools.

  12. Anyone that knows the Giants, knows that Gilbride should be punched in the face like his father. He should have been left at the tarmac in Kansas City, along with Josh Brown and the Special Teams coach.

  13. Can we finally agree that Eli is not elite? Have you ever seen Brees, Brady, Peyton, or Rodgers go on stretches like this? Where their teams lose 4 in a row in embarassing fashion? At what point will people be willing to call his performances in the playoffs a fluke, considering hes mad the playoffs less than 50% of his seasons?

  14. Two games out of First, with an almost full schedule of upcoming division games. Could and should be better, but it’s not over yet.

  15. Killdrive has to be fired, man. You just cannot support this nonsense by him anymore. And people who just look at stats think the defense is bad, wanting Fewell fired, when the defense has been GREAT until the time of possession by the opposing offenses have worn them down late in games.

It was Kevin Gilbride, not his father , who was punched in the face. He was punched in the face by the father of rex ryan, buddy.

No, they don’t. Because there are asterisks there. Giants didn’t cheat to win. Although I will always love Bill for his time in East Rutherford 1979-1990. I hate Patriot fans who like to turn a blind eye to certain things and then overstate the few things that make them look better than they are.

  18. Gilbride calling 5 wides with 3rd and 1, when Wilson had running lanes, calling three straight passes on certain drives, killing drives (hence the longstanding nickname) with baffling play calls, going away from what had been working early. Getting all those turnovers and defensive stands and giving the ball RIGHT BACK every time.

Eli is not elite….but he can be very good. However, if his line cant give him more than 2.5 seconds to set, he cannot succeed. He does not have the ability to scramble and then make plays. He is very clutch, but he’s a pathetic athlete. And this is coming from a lifelong Giants fan who loves the guy.

No, we can’t. And there are flukes and there are skill plays. Just stop it. You are never going to win this “Eli is not elite” argument. You don’t even know what you are talking about. Most of the INTs he’s thrown have come off their option route passing offense where both he and the WR have to see the same thing. The fact that people like you say “Wha, what was THAT?” shows that you don’t know what you think you know about the Giants. No one would be looking good behind that terrible offensive line, where even our two good linemen (Beatty and Boothe) are looking as bad as the guys who were injured (Baas, Snee, Diehl) and the replacements (Cordle, Brewer).

  21. I don’t understand posters calling for coach C. to be sent down the road. First, he simply does not have the needed players. They are old, slow, injured and, as such, not very talented as a team. Secondly, who knows more and is available to lead this team. Coach C. hasn’t forgotten how to coach. Firing him causes yet another step in the wrong direction.

  22. Seriously feels like my football season ended the same day as my baseball season.

And yet…they are only 2 games back in a woeful division.

  23. I cannot remember a time when the Giants looked as bad as they do right now. The O-Line is horrid and needs some changes in the offseason. Could also use a quality linebacker, a corner and a kicker!

As bad as they have been, they are only two games out. Strange how the NFC East has gone from the best division in the league to the worst so far this season.

  24. Jerry Reese has let the OLine weaken and Coughlin mistook miracles with philosophy with Gilbride’s run-and-shoot. It’s a bunk system. Eu is a great play action passer and that needs a big running game. We’ve had a great running game and tough D every winning and championship season. The Mad Bomber Offense and no linebacker D has to evolve. Lets get smart and start looking ahead.

  25. all you knee jerkers are so laughable. you think someone just forgets how to play or coach over night. football and sports is a cyclical thing… winning comes and goes… just as players an coaches do. might there be a connection? but the Giants have made a substantial mark in every decade since I’ve been a baby (a long time). YOU CAN’T WIN EVERY YEAR. so shut up you cry babies and take your medicine. it’s someone else’s turn now.

  26. You people have it wrong. These coaches are among the best in the league. Our offensive line is full of players that wouldn’t make some teams practice squads. The rest are old. Brewer? Cordle? What offense do you expect? I’m happy they scored 7.

Gimme the second pick in the draft so that we can bend over some qb starving team for a boatload of picks. Hopefully we’ll be this years rams who can find another sucker like Washington

  27. Why are Giants fans panicking?

We’re still gonna win the division. Yup, that’s right.

We just went through the most brutal stretch of our schedule. We faced a divisional opponent on the road, the best team in football, and 2 of the best defenses in the league at their stadium.

Dallas will be 2-3 after next week losing to Denver. Giants will beat Philly and be 1 game back of the division lead. Giants still have a home game against Dallas to make up another game on them.

We’re actually in pretty good shape right now, given a much easier schedule the rest of the way and the fact that the other teams in the division suck.

  28. Calling for Killdrive’s firing for 3 years is not knee jerk, the rest of it, I just yawn. I haven’t even screamed or even gotten upset the past two games. Just not worried, because Dallas won’t win more than 8 games, and the others won’t even win 8. An 8-4 finish is feasible.

  29. Giants have a big play offense. You cover them deep and they are shut down. 1st and 10 is a 20 yard out to Nicks, 2nd and 10 30 yard post to cruz, 3rd and 10 30 yard streak to Myers. lol of course they can never get anything going. Eli should take a page out of Peytons playbook.
