Bears think Israel Idonije gave their line calls to Lions

AP

Lions defensive lineman Israel Idonije didn’t have a single tackle on Sunday, but he may have played an important part in Detroit’s win over Chicago anyway.

Some players on the Bears told Michael C. Wright of ESPN that they think Idonije, who played for the Bears from 2004 to 2012, tipped off the Lions to their stunts. According to those players, the Bears run a “power” stunt, and every time they ran it on Sunday, Lions running back Reggie Bush saw it coming and burned them on it.

The Bears have a new coaching staff this year, but head coach Marc Trestman retained defensive line coach Mike Phair, so the Bears may be doing the same things and making some of the same calls they had when Idonije played on their defensive line. So Idonije might have some information he could pass along to his new team.

But the Bears knew they were playing against one of their former teammates. They should have been prepared for the possibility that Idonije would have some information to share with his new team.

  1. Of course Idonije gave calls to the Lions. And it’s upsetting as a fan that the Bears didn’t do anything about it BEFORE the game.

  2. Bears fan here…plain simple we got beat by a better prepared Lions team, and if they used Izzy’s inside GOOD FOR THEM!

Lions (3-1) move on to @Packers
Bears (3-1) move on to Saints

  3. Any time a player or coach changes teams there is the risk of the team picking them up getting valuable intel on the team the player was with.

This is why division rivals pick up each other’s castoffs all the time. Bears have nothing to complain about if they ignored the fact that Idonije was now with the Lions.

Its also a reflection of poor coaching in Chicago that they weren’t aware of the possibility and didn’t change up their calls.

  4. Both teams are playing well past expectations this year.

A split with Detroit is what I predicted.

If Detroit took advantage of the information, you can’t blame them.

I still think that Cutler is a hell of a QB. He had a bad game-these things happen.

There are still 12 more games to play-I will stick with my prediction that the Bears will finish ahead of the Lions.

  5. Wow, those Canadian really are nice, if they have intel on an opposing team they wouldn’t share it since it would give them an unfair advantage…

  6. That’s so lazy on that DC’s part. If that’s really the case, he should be fired.

Good for Idonije, that’s just being a competitor – giving your team the best chance to win. They put it in their gameplan, not knowing if it had been changed or not, and it worked. Good for the Lions.

  7. What about the three interceptions. Did he have anything to do with that?
Hey they got outplayed. The game was not as close as the score suggests.

The Bears were clearly the lesser team.

I’ve been a Cutler fan. He has the arm but now I’m also questioning does he have the brain? When a new coach tells you your mechanics are bad and your a sixth year player, not a good sign.

I see da bears parting ways this Winter.

  8. Did Izzy give them inside information 2 years ago when Jahvid Best did pretty much the same thing?

I guess it’s just easier to make excuses for the bears than it is to admit the truth that the better team yesterday was Detroit.?.? ESPN may not get it, but this is a game that lions fans have been looking forward to because the Lions are a better overall team when they have a speed RB like best or bush.

All week long we’ve heard how Long handled Atkins and Atkins is better than Suh. Glad that conversation is over. Suh dominated that poor kid. Something about Cutler being behind the line elevates Suh’s game a few notches.

No, Jay gave the Lions the win. Plain and Simple!

    ————————————————

Reggie Bush had more to do with it. Plain and Simple.

  10. Too bad, you got beat deal with it. It was stupid to not change it up. Player always help new team beat old team. Especially the bears because players always leave pissed off at them. Cheap will get you beat.

No wonder the Bears lost to those bums. Oh well, Lions will do what they do best by the end of the year… LI-DOWN, while the bears are in the playoffs

Is that why the Lions have a more recent playoff appearance? That is saying something.

Reggie played well, no denying it. If Jay didn’t throw those 2 picks. The Lions would be 2-2. shrink your head “Easyeddie” Lions aren’t that good……the final score was 40-32 in case you were watching another game before the end of this one.

  13. Idonije is going to do whatever he can to make himself useful. So are the other 52. His job depends on it.

Shouldn’t it be standard practice for the coaching staff to change the verbage year to year? If players can’t remember that “Rocket” is now “Clover” by the end of training camp, how to they understand the playbook in the first place?

  14. Bears fan here. This article literally sickens me. You got beat. Straight up. In ALL phases of the game. If you were truly stupid enough to let this actually happen, then the Bears deserve that loss two-fold.

And forget blaming it all on Cutler. Yeah, he was bad. Awful, even. But the defense kept getting gashed (16 plays of 10 yards or more) and Podlesh kept punting the ball to their 40-yard line. This game was a total meltdown, signal stealing or not. The defense needs to accept the fact that they sucked and move on.

  15. A more accurate statement by the Bears’ players would have been that every time Jay Cutler dropped back to pass he tipped off the Lions defense that a bad decision was about to occur.

  16. Lmao so Detroit won because a former Bears player gave the team Defensive line tips that they like to do? Lol All 3 ints was because we got Dline tips? The 3 sacks and fumble returned to the end zone was because of the dline tips? Going 1-13 on 3rd down was because of defensive line tips? The league has been talkin about Reggie Bush and he’s been doing an Outstanding job but our defense gets no credit. We forced 4 turnovers yesterday. Our special team played outstanding too. For once i saw a complete team out there. We’re getting it done on all 3 phases of the ball and that’s what win games. So Bears players, Bears fans, save your excuses for someone who cares. The way we’re playing we’re gonna be tough to beat no matter who’s playing across from us. So on that note, Aaron Rogers and the Greenbay Packers, get ready cuz we’re ready!

Guess you saw only the last few minutes of garbage time scores against a prevent D and 2 rookie corners. Total domination otherwise.

  18. If this is true, then the Bears have no one to blame but their coaches. I remember week 1 when the media asked Harbaugh if he was worried about Scott Tolzein and Senaca Wallace signing with the Packers right before their week 1 matchup and he said not really because they change their calls and signals weekly in case another team gets a hold of audio from game films……..which seems like the logical approach to take, so the Bears coaches would be to blame.

  19. didn’t the bears change the entire coaching staff this season? even if they haven’t,won’t the signals change game-to-game or even half-to-half.

  20. So basically they had to deal with the same thing EVERY TEAM deals with regarding former players? Wow strike up the band and start and investigation. SMH.

  21. Come on folks, it’s just one game. Lions fans shouldn’t get too excited. We’ll see which team has the better record at the end of the season.

  22. newsflash to lions and their fans. beating the bears at home in week 4 is not a playoff win no matter how amped you guys were. same thing that happened last year will happen again we you come to Chicago, and that will be you get your ass handed to you once again. you are tied with the bears and until you can beat them twice in a season just shut up.

  23. The Lions D manhandled the Bears all day (until we put reserves in when the game was out of hand). That is the reason why the Lions won. Killed them in the trenches. Killed. The game wasn’t close at all. It’s just one game, though. Incredibly tough road ahead. Go Lions!

  24. It’s funny to think this is a new thing. The only reason Jon Gruden won his Super Bowl was because he knew the line calls the Oakland QB used. Rich Gannon had one of the best passing seasons that year and used mostly line calls to audible and change the call. Gruden came from the Raiders and took over the Bucs and found out that Gannon kept the same audibles. It’s easy to defend a ball when you know where it is going.

  25. To ALL you Lions fans : Enjoy this win cause you WILL NOT beat the Bears in Chicago . Nor will you beat Green Bay next week ! So don’t get all your hopes up too high , you’ll just get let down like always . Yes you beat us yesterday but you won’t beat us in Chicago and you won’t win the division . So smile today cause it won’t last long ……..
    Go Bears !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. Lions dominated in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Cutler looked bad because he couldn’t step into his throws. Bears are whiners.

  27. To the guy with 0 football knowledge and says the Lions will go 7-9. The only way that would be true is if one thing happens and that’s major injuries. The only team on our schedule I see beating us is the Packers. We play the Browns, Bucs, Giants, Eagles, Vikings again, Bears again, Steelers, Bengals, Ravens, Cowboys, Bengals and Packers twice. Now where on the planet of earth do you see 8 losses coming from? Be serious.. If we’re healthy we can beat any of those teams with no problem.

  28. Since the Bears are accusing the Lions of this, essentially they are confirming they are using the same D-Line calls they used while he was there.

Bears should complain that they are either not smart enough to learn new calls or coaches weren’t prepared.

    This is a Bears problem.

  29. Or maybe the Lions coaching staff watched film from previous Bears games, and… nah. Couldn’t be. Nobody in the NFL actually scouts their opponents.

If the Lions play all season like they played Sunday, they’re going to win a lot of games.

  30. Here’s the problem, notice that none of the Bears players are putting their name to these claims, and for good reason. They didn’t want to appear like the 40-whiners.

Its always best to keep your trap shut after a loss except to praise the other team. Anything else comes off looking like sour grapes.

Shame on the reporter for publishing quotes without names. But in the end, he is just trying to get his own name out there.

The Lions dominated an average Bears team that has a complete overhaul in management and playbook…..You must be really proud! The Lions were 4-12 last year, Bears haven’t been 4-12 in over 10 years! Keep overrating your average squad….we will see what the Bears do to you at Solider Field later this year.

  32. Disclaimer, I am a huge Bears fan.

    1) Really? You don’t think former players help their current teams? Really? If this is true, the Bears should be embarrassed that they didn’t change their calls. Reminds me of the Lovie days. Remember when they didn’t change their hot reads and blitz attack calls for the last game at GB in 2010… we all saw how that worked out.

    2) If it is true, they should be even more embarrassed about admitting it.

    3) I know the defense is stout against the run in the statistics but, I really don’t see why or how (i have watched every game twice). Teams are gashing us up the middle and something needs to be done immediately.

    4) Bad Jay certainly showed up but, the Lions looked pretty complete when they are cool headed. If they ever had a decent coach with good leadership skills, they would be a pretty scary team.

    5) gotta make those catches in the red zone Bennett and Jeffery. And when forte is split out wide and their is a LB on him, run the friggin’ route wheel please. i only noticed it once and they motioned him back in. could have been a big play.

  33. rushed it…

  34. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a beat down of the Bears, by a very beatable Lions squad.
The only thing that might have made it better is if Suh had of accidently taken off Cutler’s head.
    One can but hope.

  35. @malcolmatf

I think Detroit has a great team this year, but you’re being a bit presumptuous. Can the Lions beat anybody? Yes. Will they beat everybody? No. Your team did lose to Arizona, so it is a bit irrational to assume instant wins against the Bengals, Bears, Super Bowl champ Ravens (even though they are looking awful), etc. AND it’s only a quarter into the season.

Best of luck to all in the NFC North, and we will see who shows up on top!

  36. Bears fans living in the past, as if they are a multiple Super Bowl winner (i.e. the annoying Steeler, Patriots, 49ers, Giants and Packer fans) as a defense mechanism when they get exposed and drubbed is hilarious.

Everyone knows the Bears have been lucky as hell every week thus far, and that luck simply ran out, and Cutler being Cutler returned.

  37. “What was the play call when they speared Kris Durham on the final onside kick?”

Now that one they pulled from the Lion’s playbook.

  38. that doesn’t make any sense because Bears have a new coaching staff w new regime…the bears and their fans are pathetic and they will lose again to Lions at soldier field..Lions were simply more physical and have more talent then the bums of the midway

  39. The Lions offense doesn’t account for the piss poor play of Cutler. The passes he did make were only possible because of his awesome wide outs. Too many of them were back shoulder, behind them, short or just plain off. Horribly, horribly off.

Don’t get a big boy contract with that play Jay. Lots of time to prove different, but when every aspect around you has gotten better…

  40. All you Lions’ homers are such cakes!!! 4-12 and 0-16 fellas, these records were compiled very recently!!!! You’re not that good. Arizona beat you guys!!! I wish the game at Soldier was next week so the Bears could smack the taste out of your mouths immediately. See you pretentious jag offs and your degenerate team on Nov 10th. Pack a lunch.

  41. bears fan, if the Lions aren’t any good, what does that make your lousy Bears? Face it, the Lions demolished the old and slow Bears.

  42. Come on Bears fans just relax!!! Lions are going nowhere very quickly. By the middle of the season most of their players will be arrested or charged with some type of a crime. The Bears are 3 and 1, so far so good. Now they have to go 3 and 1 three more times. This will make them 12 and 4 and at the top of the NFC. Jay just had a bad game.
    DAAAAA BERRRRSSS!!!!

  43. so lame to use this as an excuse. Jacksonville brought in Ricky Stanzi to get to know the chiefs better.

this happens all the time, and mostly, a good coaching staff will adjust

    You mad bro?

  45. Chicago should have traded him to the AFC to keep this from happening. NOW change the plays to stop this from happening again. NO EXCUSES CHICAGO LOST THAT GAME.

  46. Both teams have to line up and both teams need to stop each other. Hello.!!!! You cubbies fans just wait until week 7 what will be your excuse then. Sorry fan base One Year Wonders.

  47. To daaaaaa bears fans out there. You talk about how the Lions are such a bad team and how they haven’t been to the playoffs much and blah blah blah … Since 1990, guess who has been to the playoffs 7 times. Both the Bears and Lions. The Lions had the worst GM in the history of the universe and galaxy and still have been there as often as the bears in recent times. Congrats on the Super Bowl appearance and the NFC Championship game. You haven’t been a powerhouse for that long busters. Get off your high horse, your choking on sausage.

  48. Here’s the funniest part about this whole story: Lions fans are saying “The Bears lost to the better team!” instead of admitting that this story is probably true. Oh well, I guess if they had any brains they wouldn’t be Lions fans.

  49. The fact of the matter is the Lions have had a good team for 3 years. Their problem is lack of discipline! How many games have they thrown away with penalties? Undisciplined coach and players MAY have learned their lesson? I hope not! Go Pack go!
