Chargers-Raiders to kick off at 11:35 p.m. Eastern on Sunday night

The game time for Sunday’s Chargers-Raiders game at the Oakland Coliseum has been changed to 11:35 p.m. Eastern/8:35 p.m. Pacific on Sunday night, the Raiders announced on Monday.

The game will air on NFL Network.

The game was slated for 4:25 p.m. Eastern/1:25 p.m. Pacific, but with the Oakland Athletics playing on Saturday night at the Coliseum and time needed to ready the field for football, the later start time was necessitated, the Raiders said in a statement today.

Earlier on Sunday night, the 49ers will host the Texans at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park. Game time is 8:30 p.m. Eastern/5:30 p.m. Pacific on NBC.

  1. An 8:35pm Pacific start, maybe the left coasters that attend the game can experience a game like the east coasters do. See how awesome it is to get up at 5 am after arriving home at 2am

  2. Not that anyone east of San Diego cares about watching this turd of a game, but I can assure you that field will not be “ready for football”. It never is when baseball is in season.

This would be a good game to host in Hawaii so those fans can see an NFL game that at least is better than the sorry pro bowl served up to them every year.

  3. Way to show your guts, NFL.

And by that I mean, way to bend over for MLB to have their way with you. Again.

  4. the proposed idea of having the game in San Diego this week instead of week 16, cause of the baseball game, doesn’t look too bad now

too late now to switch game sites

  5. So baseball wouldn’t make any adjustments for the Ravens opener and now football is accommodating baseballs schedule? Guess Baseball has more power than it seems.

  6. But our hardcore fans in London get to wake up to a choice of football or Benny Hill reruns at 4:30AM…..

  7. scoops1 says:

why couldn’t MLB move the baseball game to noon Pacific time???

Almost certainly because the leases both teams have on the facility will specify who and when has preferential use of the stadium and under what terms.

In this case it would seem clear the baseball team has the stronger contract giving them control of the stadium if they have playoff games.

Which means that they can schedule their game when they feel like it and to hell with the NFL.

  8. I love this, and I sincerely hope this happens again, similar to the opening week Monday Night double-header. 7:30 and 10:30 pm CST Sunday Night NFL start times?!? Works for me.

  9. Choo! Choo!

Paging joetoronto! Now you’ll have to hustle to put those tarps up that cover 10,000 seasts. But look at it this way, you now have more time to sell 85% of the seats to lift the blackout. That’s a mere 45,050 seats to sell!

Ask Jacksonville if you can borrow their beer promotion to sell seats.

  10. Flex it.

No one wants to see the chargers and raiders anyway. Well I guess based on that logic, leave it how it is.

  11. It is so ridiculous that the NFL allows a team to play on a baseball stadium, and that they even have to share! In my eyes it is disgraceful and is ugly to watch..

If LA gets any team hopefully they get the Raiders so we won’t have to watch a second tier city like Oakland ruin the image of a historical team…

Even London could pull off having a football field.. wth

  12. Just a ratings test run for when there’s a London team and GMT games start in the middle of the night on the West Coast.

  13. Also, who’s announcing the game?

It can’t be Nessler and Mayock. Nessler has NCAA football the day before.

Mayock may have Notre Dame on NBC.

It’ll likely be Paul Burmeister or Randy Moss doing the play by play and Kurt Warner, Willie McGinest, or Dennis Green doing the analysis.

Stacey Dales or Aditi Kinkhabwala will do the sideline reporting.

  14. At least the westies can see what MNF is like for the rest of the country……on too late!

If they are so paranoid about west coast tv money…..do a permanent MNF double header. Love the 630 central starts!

  15. Maybe the Baltimore Orioles will see this and learn to cooperate with other teams in your city! Especially a Super Bowl winning team!!

  16. So the NFL agrees to rearrange their schedule around a baseball game that wasn’t even on the books until a few days ago?

I nominate that this game be heretofore referred to as the “MLB Payoff” game.

  17. Don’t blame baseball, blame the Raider organization for not having it own stadium and they have to resort to sharing with a baseball team.

  18. @db105 – Charger fans don’t go to Charger games here in SD.. Why the hell would they travel all the way to Oakland to go to one? If you saw the Cowboys game, you saw what that stadium usually looks like.. More visiting fans than bandwagon Chargers fans.

Google can make you look smarter. It’s too late this time, but there’s always tomorrow.

  21. Take that game and stick it up your a$$ NFL, Sunday and Monday night games should start at 7:30 pm at the latest, 2 hrs of babbling before the game is putting everyone to sleep

  22. It’s really sad that the 2nd most popular sport in America (Nascar is #1) has to adjust for a sport that nobody in America cares about. Baseball should have to adjust for Football.

  23. 4grammarpolice says: Sep 30, 2013 8:34 PM

For anyone complaining about this, it’s a simple formula: The A’s are good, the Raiders suck. Any questions?

For anyone else, it’s a simple guarantee: Even with the horrible start time, the Chargers / Raiders game will STILL generate better television ratings than the A’s game. You can take that to the bank.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

It wasn’t all that long ago this was the norm. Wonder why football has wussified?

  25. More football for everybody who wants to watch. Really, are you east coasters that upset you won’t see the Raiders play the Chargers? This is the playoffs for baseball so they have to get the right of way.

Blame Al Davis for running this franchise into the ground and being unable to get his own stadium. Crazy Al was still using a projector to fire coaches for god sakes.

Man, buffoons like you need to understand the situations of cities such as San Diego, Phoenix, and Miami that have ideal climate 12 months continually. They don’t have frozen tundras, so they are transplant/relocation points, so of course 1/2 the stadium will ALWAYS have fans of opposing teams. No one gets up and says “Hey Philly has awesome weather in December, lets move there!” I’ve been down to SD. The reason why 1/2 their fans don’t show up is because there is so much more to do than huddle over a fire keeping warm trying to watch a game. Understand bonehead?

  27. Guess some fans only like teams at the top. Life long Raider fan in Maine. How could that lousy Goodall do something so stupid. Baseball sucks. Should have played Saturday night regardless of the idiot fans who only watch teams with a winning record. This will be the 1st Raider game that I will miss since 95. Great job commish.

  28. Whaaaaaaa!!! Chargers fans ave too many “other things to do” besides being loyal fans!!! Whaaaaaaaaaa!!!! Dumbazzzzz

  29. For those lamenting “how could baseball upstage the NFL?” or “just shows how lame the Raider’s organization is”, it is a matter of simple economics. One organization leases the stadium for 10 events a year, the other organization leases the stadium for 81 events a year. Which one do you think has more clout?

  31. hey that is one heck of a wrench seeing how no airlines fly out of Oakland after midnight. Triple the airfare cost this late of notice for all the season ticket holders that fly in, …anybody want to buy 2 50 yard line seats above the tunnel?(sec 117)

  32. Best part about this is that we can avoid NFL Network host Chris Rose.

Fox Sports did and late Sunday night we’ll be watching the real Best Damn Sports Show Period!!!

Raiders … Chargers … ONLY on NFL NETWORK!!!

  33. My 7 year old asked me why there was dirt on the field during an Oakland game a couple of weeks ago. Yesterday while driving to Arrowhead he made the remark “it’s better to play football in a different place than baseball.” This concept which a 7 year old can understand (after all he is smarter than Logicalvoice) isn’t exactly a new concept. Arrowhead was built in 1972. It’s ridiculous to let MLB dictate NFL schedules

  34. Baseball dictates to football but I have don’t remember football ever dictating to baseball. Through only 4 weeks of NFL play, two games have already had to be moved around to accommodate one of the most boring games around. Thank God baseball is almost over (but only for a couple months).

  35. @wolfmanpatriot – lose sleep = stay up until early morning to cover game. Get the pun? Probably not. You probably struggle with the stupid Queen my dishes kid on that commercial.

  36. Seems easy to me.

81 regular season home dates for the A’s,
8 regular season home dates for the Raiders.

So who makes the facility more money on a yearly basis?

  37. easyrider1903 says: Sep 30, 2013 7:42 PM

Tell the A’s to go get their own damn stadium!!!
    ———————————————

It WAS their own damn stadium until the Raiders decided they wanted to come back. Maybe the Raiders should find their own stadium.

  38. The play football games at the Coliseum? All i hear about is stabbings and killings and fights. Well I suppose i will watch this game as well. Chargers win by 16

  39. I love how the league goes hardcore and enforces phantom helmet-to-helmet hits without benefit of a replay; schedules the Super Bowl during a potential blizzard, and can’t figure out a way to get a west coast game played at a decent time due to an extremely edge-case scenario and a contract with NBC. Eventually, customers will get fed up with this nonsense.

    Bravo, Goodell.

  40. HA! The NFL has smaller stadiums than college ball, and the NFL can’t even afford their own stadiums. Stanford and Cal have new stadiums, not SF, SD or Oak.

There are 6 pro football teams between NY and Cal, yet only 1 has a stadium that is an actual football stadium they can call their own. LOL.

  41. This will be as unwatchable as one of those late Saturday night Hawaii Rainbow Warrior games that start at about 10:30pm PT against some school like West Texas Community College.

  42. I just want to watch the highlights of the fans fighting in the stands. I guess ESPN will cover them all in the morning. Whenever that is.

  43. Baseball needs to shorten their season and get out of the way of a real sport…football.

Maybe play 12 double headers a year so the season finishes by the end of September.

That beind said, aside from a few die-hard fans in California and fantasy team owners will anyone really notice the Chargers and Raiders haven’t played yet?

  44. This should mean I get a small refund on my NFL Sunday Ticket package right?

I don’t get the NFL Network so I can’t watch a game I have already paid for.

    **************************************************
I hear you, Gary. I haven’t missed a Raider game since the inception of the Sunday Ticket.

To the ignorant, and God knows there are plenty here, the Raiders have fans all over the world, the Raiders are truly global, like it or not.

  46. Part of the lack of fanbase in SD is also due to the fact the Spanos have been less than ideal owners. Its hard to maintain a fan base if you are not willing to pay your best players.

  47. The NFL didn’t want to schedule this game in San Diego this weekend because of the likelihood they would get to air this game on their own network when the Oakland A’s play an inevitable divisional round playoff game….possibly more. It doesn’t surprise me honestly. I mean, the Raiders are now the only NFL team that share a stadium with a baseball club. What better way to rake in a little extra spending money with those sweet ad campaigns?

  48. They should’ve played this game LA so the NFL can see for themselves if LA is a Raider town or a charger town. I know LA has tens of thousands of Raider fans still. The NFL is so dumb for not giving it a shot. And yet London gets a game. SMH

  49. i am still pissed off about this…this is nothing but a wrench. When I first heard of it , I heard if there was a conflict with the A’s that they would just flip the games with the chargers. Meaning Raiders would play in San Diego this weekend, and San Diego would play in Oakland in December…..that makes a lot more sense then this bs.

  50. I can’t believe Mayock is on the NFL channel. He’s a COLLEGE or COMBINE guy. Knows his stuff there but C’MON NFL channel. Get somebody else please !!!

  51. Man, is this crap. I guess I’ll have a few extra cups of coffee on Sunday. I’m a football junkie so I’ll watch.

As far as I know, Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts will still call the game as CBS will still produce it. It will air on over the air channels in San Diego and Oakland and NFLN will air it nationally.

In this day and age, this should NOT happen.

Sunday will be a LOOOOONG day and night.

  52. The winners are those who live in the Raiders broadcast area and still only get broadcast games.
They will get to watch quality football that matters instead of the Raiders.

Also, the carjackers and muggers out in darkest Oakland will have a great criminal prize.

The losers are anyone driving trying to cross a bridge in the bay area Sunday afternoon and night.

Don’t be the lost Charger fan driving down Mandela Parkway in the middle of the night.

  53. I just thought of something.

What if it rains on Saturday night in Oakland? I can see it now. A beautiful day all afternoon but it rains at night and the A’s have to play on Sunday. Then what? Doubleheader Monday? Or a split MNF?

  54. How drunk are those Raiders fans going to be when the game starts? Literally drinking all day right up until kick off. Yikes.

  55. This is a slap in the face to all of the great raider and chargers fans outside california and in particular the east coast fans.

Been a diehard fan for 40 years – bought the package etc etc and this is how Goodell and the NFL treats us? Moving the game to midnight so we can not watch? Hey Goodell we little people – you know the ones that actually pay your ridiculous salary – are the only reason you and the NFL are employed. I have a family and a job to get up to in the morning and can not afford to stay up until 3am to watch my team. This is one of the all time great football rivalries that the fans get up for – regardless of how good or bad the teams are. Thanks for ruining it for us hard working fans on the east coast.

    sincerely, PISSSED OFF
