Seymour says “No way” when asked about Pats return

richard seymour getty Getty Images

The Patriots obviously need some defensive line help, after the season-ending injury to Vince Wilfork last night.

It doesn’t appear Richard Seymour is a possibility.

Seymour laughed and told Ron Borges of the Boston HeraldNo way,” when asked about a possible return to the team that drafted him.

Of course, there’s also the possibility the Patriots would have the same reaction.

The 33-year-old Seymour isn’t a like-for-like replacement for the massive Wilfork, and is obviously looking for another payday.

So even if they were inclined to bring back the former first-rounder, he might have priced himself out of the market.

I guess with the cameras gone and Hernandez in the pokey, Bill can no longer pay under the table.

Once Amendola is officially out for the year(big surprise, I know), look for Bill to put out some feelers for Rae Carruth.

  2. CKL says: Sep 30, 2013 4:12 PM

Good. Couldn’t stand his attitude when he was on the Pats. He whined about things…even AFTER he got paid. Thanks for Nate Solder, Richard.

  3. lanman11 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:12 PM

No sense bringing in that attitude….

  4. deliveredbysherpa says: Sep 30, 2013 4:14 PM

I guess Seymour doesn’t want to play football in the playoffs. He’s just out there looking for an 8-win team (or less) to play with.

  5. deliveredbysherpa says: Sep 30, 2013 4:15 PM

Plus, I doubt Bill B. will be asking.

Lots of bad blood as Seymour was incensed when the Pats traded him to Oakland when his contract demands were not realistic. Seymour is hoping to find another dumb team like the Raiders who will give into his contract demands even though he is a shell of himself.

Very happy with Nate Solder as a result of the trade and that the Pats did not pay his ransom of 15M per season like the team whose fanbase thinks it is Halloween every Sunday.

Wilfork is a NT so I don’t understand why Richard Seymour would even be a consideration at this point.

The patriots should call Nate Solder.

  12. brazzz01 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:23 PM

Seymour obviously wants nothing to do with a team that can’t win without Spygate.

I applaud the man’s honor and integrity, as all intelligent football fans should.

  13. zmoney916 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:27 PM

Fortunately Ron Borges is a hack, so I don’t really believe anything that plagiarist says. It’s a battle between him and John Tomase of who is a crappier journalist.

  14. cliverush says: Sep 30, 2013 4:28 PM

The Patriots are not looking for Seymour due to several factors as follows; bad attitude, over paid, big ego, not a team player, old and worn out, enjoys playing for teams that have no chance for the playoffs, thus no pressure to perform for the whole game etc. etc.

  15. brazzz01 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:30 PM

Why do people think Brady is a good QB when he clearly is nothing without Spygate?

  16. mute617 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:32 PM

How is he “obviously looking or a payday” or “priced himself out”? I see nothing about money in the article (s)

  17. mute617 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:36 PM

Oh, because back when he got traded it was because he wanted to be paid. Still don’t see how that correlates to this. He said he wants to play for a contender in the bottom link. With no mention about money.

  18. sdboltaction says: Sep 30, 2013 4:37 PM

San Diego needs desperate help on defense. Freeney did help with the pass rush and now he’s gone. The Chargers defense, or lack thereof, will be the reason the team doesn’t get the extra mile this year. The offense is clicking and doing well, but damn, that defense is horrid.

  19. meatsweat says: Sep 30, 2013 4:38 PM

Ron Borges trying to drum up negativity around the Patriots?! Can’t imagine that…

  20. oakfolk says: Sep 30, 2013 4:40 PM

Seymour earned and robbed so much money from the Pats and Raiders (respectively) that he can sit at home and patiently wait for an offer. May not ever come, but it’s sure a nice position to be in. Just because you saw it happen as a Raider with Palmer doesn’t mean teams are as stupid as we were. Then again, desperation is a mutha!

  21. earpaniac says: Sep 30, 2013 4:43 PM

Not trying to be funny, but I could’ve sworn he was older than this. I guess he’s just one of those guys who it seems like has been around forever. Could’ve sworn he was closer to 40.

  22. rickrock6661982 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:47 PM

“I guess Seymour doesn’t want to play football in the playoffs.”

Or, more likely, he wants to play with a team that aspires to win a Super Bowl.

I mean, it’s been close to ten years for New England now..

  23. doublezero74 says: Sep 30, 2013 4:49 PM

Seymour isn’t an option anyway. Borges just needs something to write about. He should ask 48 yr old Ted Washington next

Look for AJ Francis, Ron Brace or Kyle Love to get a look to come back to the Patriots. The 4-0 patriots

  24. fearthehoody says: Sep 30, 2013 4:50 PM

  25. azarkhan says: Sep 30, 2013 4:51 PM

He made the Pro Bowl 7x (5 with the Pats), 4x AFC champ and 3x Super Bowl champion. He was a great player but now he’s on the wrong side of 30.

  26. tothefellowshipofthemiserable says: Sep 30, 2013 4:54 PM

Jaworski says the Chiefs are the worst 4-0 team but after look at the empirical data, I have to say it’s the Pats.
But no matter really, being the worst 4-0 team is still light years better than being the best 0-4 team.

  29. harrisonhits2 says: Sep 30, 2013 5:01 PM

Only a hack like Borges who hates the Pats would even think of something stupid like this.

Seymour is a defensive end, Wilfork is a nose tackle, the skills are somewhat different.

Not that the Pats would want Seymour and his attitude back either. He got traded because he wanted to be way over paid. That’s Seymour’s only concern. Winning or losing he doesn’t care and it shows in his play on field as well.

The Pats have Vellano who filled in last night after Wilfork was hurt and another rookie who will be promoted from the practice squad and both will be tossed into the fire. Welcome to life as a rookie on the Pats this year. The receivers are coming along nicely and these guys will too.

As a pats fan, the way they blindsided, Milloy, Law dumped Samuel, ran Moss out of town (by that I mean Billichick coming up and saying ‘we’re not sure about your status next year, causing him to talk about it week 1 as ‘unappreciated’)
Then telling welker he overestimated his value in the league, after catching more than anyone over 6 years, letting him go.

The pats do not always get it right and their arrogance is blatant.

  37. whywerule says: Sep 30, 2013 5:34 PM

Seymour would not be a bad pickup by the Pats if he still liked football. But it is clear that the only thing he has cared about for the last five years or so is his paycheck. He showed up occasionally for games with the Raiders, but not nearly enough for what he was getting paid.

  38. rad312 says: Sep 30, 2013 5:39 PM

The hack known as Borges once wrote….

“On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sack last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

Borges is a hack! Big Sey in his day was tremendous however that day was some time ago. He had essentially one good year for the Raiders and otherwise collected a big check for minimal production.

  39. tigerlilac says: Sep 30, 2013 5:42 PM

Seymour was a great player who wanted to both play for a winner and be paid as an elite player. Alas, he could not get both with the Patriots, who saved the money for Wilfork and traded him to a place he would get paid. In response, he literally locked himself in his bedroom for a week, like a teenage boy who was dumped by his first love, before reporting to Oakland. Years later he is still emotionally hurt. Somehow the haters want to spin this as a sign that players don’t want to play for the Patriots a day after Aqib Tabil, Tommy Kelly and LeGarrette Blount were collectively pinching themselves on national television over their good fortune to be playing for the Patriots.

  40. patfanken says: Sep 30, 2013 5:44 PM

Borges, that convicted plagiarist, lost his ONLY source within the Pats organization when Seymour was traded.

There is no mediot in the nation who knows LESS about the Patriots than Wrong Borges. All he is good for is for when the Haters want to trot out a supposed “Patriots expert” when they need something negative to be said about the Pats.

He’s really a pathetic figure, who is merely a characture of what a reporter is supposed to be. He is a walking example of what a reporter isn’t supposed to be. He’s a smarmy bully who isn’t very knowledgeable and uses his pulpit to further is own agenda.

It’s really time to ban all people that bring up nothing but the bogus Spygate BS whenever discussing the Patriots.

People seem to be jealous of success. So let’s just take down the #1 Pats because our own team is so bad.

Every team was cheating, every team was videotaping because it was legal to do so. Goodell sent that memo about videotaping to every team in the NFL, not just the Pats. That’s because every team was videotaping, not just the Pats. So people just need to get off this and get a life.

  55. EJ says: Sep 30, 2013 9:31 PM

Without their Defense playing like it has, the Patriots would be 2-2 at best. Buffalo was extremely close to beating them, with a few extra minutes the Jets would have closed on them and the Falcons were one completion away from forcing overtime. As the season wears on, New England will eventually feel the wrath of the injury bug like most other teams have, by then their D won’t be able to save Brady and his inept receivers anymore.

  56. romoscollarbone says: Sep 30, 2013 9:46 PM

Don’t feed the trolls; it just encourages them to keep doing what they’re doing…ignore them and they go away

Belichick and the Patriots are successful because they make moves in the best interest of the team, not based on sentimentality, so when people call them “cold” and “heartless”, they really have no clue what they’re talking about…is it tough to lose fan favorites? Of course, but paying older players for what they did in the past does not bring future success; Seymour was traded because of his attitude and money demands, and we got a franchise LT in the deal…Milloy was cut for the same reason, and it was time to move on from Vrabel, Moss, and Welker…you wanna know why this team wins double digit games every year? Bill Belichick knows the business and makes moves that need to be made…expensive players go, less expensive, younger players come in

  59. demons87 says: Oct 1, 2013 12:03 AM

Wow, 6 years later and people still think they are funny telling the same old spygate jokes.

Just for the record, since spygate Brady has won 5 division championships, 2 AFC Championships, 5 pro bowls, 2 first team all pro, 2 MVPs, 2 Offensive player of the year, 1 male athlete of the year (AP), Comeback player of the year. All that even with missing a season with a torn ACL.

Oh and he broke the record for TDs in a season.

So if you consider that nothing, then I guess your right. The only thing I know is that you wish he was your teams QB for the last 6 years,

  60. mtrhead269 says: Oct 1, 2013 12:23 AM

Seymour was a great player. He’s old been out of the league all year hasn’t played nose since his rookie year. I’m not sure anyone is calling him at his age. Time for him to enjoy his family.
