Dwight Freeney’s first season with the Chargers is over after four games.

Freeney, the veteran outside linebacker who signed with the Chargers in May, is headed to injured reserve and out for the year, U-T San Diego reports.

Freeney suffered a torn quad in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys, and he will require at least a few months of recovery time.

Although he only had half a sack, the 33-year-old Freeney was off to a good start with the Chargers, getting consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks and starting all four games. He’ll be tough for the Chargers to replace.

Freeney still has another season left on the two-year deal he signed with the Chargers, so he may be back in San Diego in 2014.
